When Ruphus’ fourth album “Inner Voice” was released in 1977, the Norwegian band had relocated to Germany, hot on the heels of the previous album “Let Your Light Shine” which had massive success there. Martin Rude (Sun River) & Jakob Skott (Causa Sui) team up for a genre-defying record that was recorded during an exceptional session on March 3rd 2020. Martin brought his Double Bass, Acoustic & Baritone guitar into the studio of Causa Sui, where Jakob’s drums were already miked & prepped by soundwiz Jonas Munk, freshly tuned from the new Causa Sui recordings. The music they played ranges from sprawled out pre-fusion electric jazz to psychedelic folk ragas. After the sessions, the hours of free floating music was edited & dubbed by Jakob Skott into shorter cohesive segments, but maintaining the improvised vibe of these first takes. It is a record that pays homage to the great innovators of jazz: Miles & Trane (or perhaps more fittingly their peak-drummers: Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette & Elvin Jones), as well as Mingus at his fiercest or Sun Ra at his most exotic. Not merely a tribute, the album doubles down with guitar pickings ala John Fahey & Sandy Bull, as well as sparse layers of oddly-tempered mallet percussion and synthesizers. But perhaps the closest reference isn’t something of a certain place in time, but rather a free flowing ethos of stoic proportions: letting happen what it may, turning the accidents and mistakes along the way into something vital.

With "I am what I am/talk a little too much/laugh a little too loud/think a little too much", Alexa Rodrian has made a statement in terms of self-portrait that has become sound on her penultimate album Mothersday (2013). Her latest release Mother Unplugged (2015) also deals with her role as a woman and mother. Her third album One Hour To Midnight, released on the lover's label Enja Records, also proves her sense of family, which the singer herself calls her opus magnum: The cover shows the old dual turntable of Rodrian's mother. But more than that, it testifies that the experienced jazz tube can also play the very, very quiet (intermediate) notes. In thirteen songwriter-jazz pieces - including eight original compositions, a collaboration with her partner Jens Fischer Rodrian and four surprising interpretations, each of which, following the idea of a duo album, allows a different musical partner to interact with Rodrian - the New York-trained artist, who for the first time has not only written her own songs, but to a large extent also arranged it himself, a sign for more empathy and togetherness, against exclusion and hatred. A record from a strong feminine position that explicitly welcomes men. Consequently, 20% of the proceeds go to the development policy non-profit water initiative Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e. V., which, for example, promotes spring water catchments so that clean drinking water can be obtained - traditionally women's work in developing countries.

I only found out there was a rarer LP with a longer version of the track around the same time, with the bonus of a pile of solid Funk, modern and sweet soul tracks. Fast-forward to 2019 and friend Angelo Angione hooked me up with the band who were excited to work with me on a reissue. Now those who know the LP will know it's rather odd cover, this was a marketing idea by someone at the Label, despite the band not wanting to use it that's the way it ended up. We decided to put things right and have reinstated the original cover shot of the band. This LP is simply one of the finest 70s LPs, it's mad that it has not been reissued before now…enjoy.

The sociopolitical and environmental focus on our world seems to be stronger than ever, predominantly for all the wrong reasons. But consequential calls for action can also summon a positive uprising of both energy and creativity - something particularly evident in the story behind 'Broken Circles' from New York-based saxophonist/composer Jure Pukl, with new music that reflects empathy and respect.Previous Whirlwind releases 'Hybrid' (2017) and 'Doubtless' (2018) featured more spatial quartet and dual-tenor environments. But Pukl has also been honing this quite different quintet sound with the arresting line-up of guitarist Charles Altura, vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Kweku Sumbry.Apparent from the opening bars of "Sustained Optimism" is the fluidity of this quintet, where Pukl's constant stream of tenor invention is echoed in the rapid elegance of guitar and vibes, supported by electrifying rhythm section; and the title track's similar determination chimes with scintillating shared phrases and improvisation. While "Separation" (a favourite of Pukl's) echoes themes of broken communities and relationships repeated across the globe, its mellow beauty serves to remind us of our responsibilities to one another; and a Chilean kalimba - "the sound of love, positivity and compassion" - announces a sublime quintet arrangement of previously recorded "Compassion".Buoyant "Triumph of Society" - an anthem for change that starts with us all - trades tenor against vibes, also featuring remarkable guitar and drum solos, towards an almost symphonic conclusion; and Pukl's pensive bass clarinet in "Gloomy Sunday" - a 1930s Hungarian tune with dark associations - also finds the light. Elsewhere, busy 11/8 "Half Past Five" swirls with abandon; "Kids" (charmingly introduced by two young sax students) is a contemplative falling-phrase paean to the next generation; and sprightly soprano conclusion "Sky is the Limit" confirms the overarching joy in this album

A move to Tokyo was followed by the release of their first single on Yupiteru Records, thanks to original guitarist Yuji Suzuki who had became an A&R man for the label. Citing British bands like Wishbone Ash and Camel as influences, Yamamoto and Piper nevertheless conjured up classic American sounds on Piper's recordings, utilizing unusual recording techniques and new technologies like Linn drums to effortlessly blend styles of funk, soul and fusion and simultaneously evoking summer vibes, autumnal breezes, and wintery shimmer. Summer Breeze is Piper's second album, originally released in 1984 on Yupiteru. Inspired by the sounds of Masayoshi Takanaka and Tatsuro Yamashita, as well as the concept of "BGM" (background music) championed by YMO, Summer Breeze was a conscious about face from their debut to create a new signature sound and become masters of summery resort vibes. Its smooth sounds belie the bevy of experimentation utilized on the recording, from vocoders and drum programming to recording guitars direct through the board. Even the iconic cover art, with the surfer wearing an impossibly short crop top, is deceiving in its simplicity - it was one of the most expensive jackets produced by the label at the time, due to its use of special spot colors and custom handlettering. The original album featured the marketing copy "Good Weather! Good Sounds!" which perfectly encapsulates the sounds contained on the album.

By 1980 when this was originally released Pharoah Sanders was solidly entrenched with his own voice on tenor. The passing of John Coltrane and Sanders's fruitful years of playing with the prolific saxophone genius resulted with an unmistakable influence on his sound and explorations of the instrument. Beginning with "Greetings To Idris" the structure of the music is one that follows tradition yet opens up for the musicians to improvise within the arrangements. "Greetings To Idris" is in reference to the featured drummer Idris Muhammad who also played with Coltrane during his late period. Naturally Sanders is featured as the main instrument and his horn can be bold and demanding of your full attention. Always interested in other instruments from other cultures, much like Trane, he incorporates the Japanese instrument the koto, a beautifully harmonic stringed instrument to counter his soft rich blowing on tenor with only wind chimes and a harmonium for a delicious peaceful bit of music on "Kazuko" (Peace Child) that has the qualities of a meditative offering. Most of the music, eight tracks, is composed and arranged by Sanders and demonstrates his leadership. There is one John Coltrane composition entitled "After The Rain" that gets the Tranesque treatment by Sanders that makes it hard for even the most discerning listener to distinguish between the original version and Sanders impression. It is a bluesy duet featuring only sax and piano and leaves you wanting to hear it over and over again because of it's simple and haunting melodies. Another song that Coltrane recorded entitled "Easy To Remember" has a gentle swing to it built around a classic quartet (drums, bass, piano, sax) like that employed by Coltrane that results in a superb standard. Sanders incorporates the use of another 'foreign' instrument to jazz by working in a tabla and sitar on "Soledad " that takes center stage before Sanders joins in on the music. The result is a thing of genius as the East and West merge and interface for composition that is peaceful. Sanders music on this LP fluctuates between the tranquil sounds of his mellow horn to the outer limits where he left off with the explorations of Trane's late period. What separates this LP from others is that it is a group playing under his leadership where he gives all others close to equal billing. The uptempo, "You've Got To Have freedom" is one such song where Sanders gets out there on some of his solos but works within the group structure as the other musicians, most notably Eddie Henderson on flugelhorn, bring the music back home. There is a chorus sung much of the time throughout where the the proclamation »Ya gotta have peace and love, ya gotta have freedom« is presented in Manhattan Transfer style but with much more soul. The use of vocalists is done again on the track entitled "Think About The One". The chorus features vocalese specialist Bobby McFerrin. This LP shows the different sides of Pharoah Sanders, a man always willing to explore the music, explore his soul and share it with you. The closing track "Bedria" is a mellow exploration of the various ranges of the tenor. It is a ten minute song that displays all the grace of his being, a gentle giant who can manipulate the horn to do extraordinary things, reverberating out and back in undulating waves of harmonic bliss. Sanders on this LP is next to perfect. One of his best recording from his post Impulse career. It belongs in your jazz collection right next to John Coltrane.
