Led by a dynamic front woman, Beast are a new five member heavy metal band straight out of Stockholm City, Sweden. They're new on the scene and brimming with raw energy in their live performances, as well as on the material in their previously released self-titled EP and three seven-inch singles. Dead or Alive marks the debut full-length album from Beast, which has quickly become highly anticipated among the group's steadily inclining fan base. From the beginning it's an undeniable fact that Beast have a hard to match energy, ambition and presence just from the presented audible content, let alone how well they're said to perform on stage. Vocalist Maria commands not only the majority of this presence, but a ruling set of clear vocal chords that carry the album with the dominance that only a woman's touch on the mic can convey in heavy metal. She's backed all the while by a blitzkrieg of thrashing guitar advancements and high velocity drumming. The great thing about these high speed compositions is that they know when to shut the hell up and let the weight of the twangy bass grooves speak up in tracks such as "Outracin' Hell", "Dead or Alive", "Night Lust" and "Cold Breeze". While the aforesaid is true in every aspect, the most unforgiving quality of Dead or Alive is the grieving lack of variety over the course of the track list. The band has the ripping, shredding, blasting heavy metal composure down pat, along with the skills to bring everything together;
the lead guitarist is an absolute maniac on the fret board and shows off his talents on nearly every track, drummer Mattias flogs the skins on his kit with variety at a blistering pace, the rhythm guitar uses an array of up and down strummed power chord progressions and the bassist beckons the utmost respect with his fluid developments. All of these ingredients fit together flawlessly, but the workmanship crumbles away due to the repeat rhythms from song to song. Nearly each track takes on a similar pattern to that of "Devil With a Black Dress On" by Jack Off Jill, save "Nightmare" and "Out of Reach", only at a higher tempo and with more solos added to the mix. While the rhythms are catchy and the vocals ensnare the mind, there is little discrepancy between tracks which leads them all to melding together over time. Dead or Alive shows the immense potential of Beast. It showcases the musical prowess possessed by each band member in an exhibition of instrument showmanship over the course of nine involved tracks. It's a real shame that only a few of the tracks stand apart from each other in terms of composition. If the album delivered more variety it would indeed be one of a kind. Instead, it falls just short of the maximum potential that can be heard waiting to burst through. Beast are a band to keep an eye on in the future, and though it has its shortcomings, Dead or Alive is worth a few listens, especially for those that love female vocals, thrash metal and heavy metal.
