The first Nighttime World was one of Hood's earliest records, released on Cheap back in '95. It was followed five years later by Nighttime World Volume 2 on his own label, M-Plant. The third edition in the long-running series takes a more conceptual tack than its predecessors: this time Hood is focusing squarely on Detroit, the city he calls home and whose famous techno scene he had a significant role in building. More specifically, the album is inspired by Requiem For Detroit?, a 2010 documentary by Julien Temple that examines the city's spectacular decline, a result of an industry implosion that Temple calls a "man-made Katrina." In Hood's opinion, increasing awareness of Detroit's condition could only be good for the city. "The situation in Detroit is making people uncomfortable but that's a good thing if we look at it in the right perspective," he says. "It's a shaking up and realisation of the condition that Detroit has been in for so long. As it was a long and slow process people became immune to what was happening, almost asleep at the wheel. This once progressive city is now half gone. To make a new future, Detroit needs to look deep within to be able to see a new vision and thrive once more. As long as there is a seed, there is hope.
