London based electronic marvel Kel McKeown - aka Kelpe - celebrates ten years of sonic boundary pushing with new maxi single, DRUT001/ 'Answered' - out April 15th - and new LP DRUT002/ 'Fourth: The Golden Eagle' - out June 3rd - both on his brand new label DRUT. Setting to work with a selection of analogue synths - Moog, Korg Polysix, Korg MS10 and Doepfer Dark Energy - the Ableton aficionado and purveyor of warped, cut 'n' spliced cliq-hop beats has delivered a handcrafted, 10-track masterpiece of an album which draws upon the strengths of his previous three. It's softer, warmer and more graceful than 2009's 'Cambio Wechsel', with a strong melodic element, and one which will secure his place in the canon of post-IDM greats. Kelpe says of the LP: "On the whole, I was trying to make the warmest and most analogue sounding thing I've done, and I think it came out best on 'Answered'. The rest of the LP, in a way, is an extended build up to that favourite track on the record, which in itself was an opportunity to take leave of everything preceding it and go off on an epic trip." Rollicking opener and curveball 'Astrolomy' brings to mind the mesmeric Anatolian guitar of 'After Gold' - a standout track on 'Cambio Wechsel' - swishing its tail to syncopated drum rolls as it dodges electro bolts-out-of-the-blue. It's followed by the lush, soulful, heavenly Baths-esque future pop of 'Beaks of Eagles' - with gloopy synths, hollowed beats and obfuscated crowd chatter - the kind of song that chillwave probably wanted to be, but never quite was. The shoegaze-ready 'Nice Eyes In My Size', with twinkles of xylophone and twisted, subtractive synths aping the guitar's wah-ing licks, is pursued and offset by the squelchy industrial clamour of ensuing track 'Single Stripe', which metamorphoses from techno to dream-pop in one fell swoop, glossed over with fade-out vocals and a denouement of synthetic steel drums. "I Felt Fuzzy" is something of a new direction for KELPE. It combines his usual solid electronic 4/4 platform with a light airy organic feel and a chopped ethereal female vocal, redolent of springtime and sunshine. ,Cola Mine" brings a darker flavour for track 2, building by stacking up layer on layer of fat analogue synth with a slightly despondent air. The quirky synth solo is reminiscent of Plaid for their unsual yet catchy melodies, and the tune is funny and serious at the same time. ,Frosty Kiss" begins with serious intent. Hissing gas in place of high hats, a mechanical forward motion, a heavy trembling synth bass monotone, then 40 seconds in it launches into classic Kelpe banger - a heavy 100bpm beat, with a beautiful evolving elegiac melody on top, exciting, happy and sad, all at the same time, like the best Aphex tunes. Next up is the vinyl exclusive BNJMN renix of ,Cola Mine". BNJMN"s star has risen rapidly in the last 18 months, with two albums for Rush Hour and a bunch of EPs. It might be forgotten that he made his first record for Svetlana under the name Jackhigh, and followed up with a popular download EP in June 2011 for which Kelpe provided a remix. Here he returns the favour with a dreamy laid back take on Kelpe"s tight original. Following that, comes ,I Felt Fuzzy" (Cupp Cave Remix) . Belgium"s Cupp Cave has been growing in stature recently, releas-ing under his own name and using the alias Ssaliva for more abstract releases, including on LA"s Leaving Records, and he"ll also be re-leasing with Svetlana"s imminent spin-off label, Woetone. His remix is a radical rework, tapping into the kind of sludgy amorphous house sound that Lukid has been championing, at the very edge of current electronic music evolution. The EP closes with ,I Felt Fuzzy" remixed again, this time by Naïve Machine, a production duo fresh on the scene who have delivered an undeniable banger. Kelpe's recent ,I Felt Fuzzy" EP on April was his first drop in a year and it dropped deep, selling out its vinyl run and attracting praise from all forms media, old and new. The muse was clearly high, new tracks were popping out and, with a serious banger of a remix from Neon Jung in the bag, it seemed only right to put out another EP quick sharp. Where ,I Felt Fuzzy" came in at 23 minutes and a whole side of remixes, here the focus is on Kelpe"s own productions, and at 15 minutes with longer workouts leading the opening of each side, followed by shorter more beat-based works, it"s very much the classic extended play single, something Svetlana Industries promotes as the perfect format for electronic music. Kicking off with a rolling, bouncing rhythm played live on kitchen pots and pans, title track ,Bags Of Time" s bounding forward motion belies its relatively relaxed speed. 110BPM is actually a classic Kelpe tempo, that territory between hip hop and house which only a few producers can properly drive. Also classic Kelpe is the fat analogue synth riff that holds down the bottom end, slowly morphing throughout the tune. ,Double Punt" is an elegant and more serious statement, the beat is less obvious, the chord sequence sombre, the sound levels building until it enters a synthy stew. It feels forboding, ambiguous, a new side to Kelpe. On the flip, Neon Jung's Wormhole Remix of ,Bags Of Time" is just breathless, conjuring up a dizzy vortex of sound right from the start. Audibly building on the same blocks as the original, but channeling a whole flow, this is contemporary UK dance music at its finest. At a club friendly 135bpm, it ties the heavy syncopated rhythm tracks of UK bass to an increasingly euphoric melody that peaks at a righteous, giddy and glorious frenzy. The EP"s red lantern is "City" a quiet belter with heavy heavy heavy analogue bass over understated drums, until a very pretty melody drops. With the flavours of classic electro hip hop fattened up for the new millennium, "City"'s synth parts are poetic and beautiful, and it's a subtle little treasure to close off the disc.
