Kråke, Norwegian for “Crow”, was founded by the brothers Dreugh and Beist in 2007. The band hailing from Kopervik on the west coast of Norway surprised me already in 2008 with their promising 3 track promo/demo and I have to admit I’ve been wondering where these guys went. Apart from some live-shows at Karmøygeddon it has been pretty quiet since then. But now the album is finally here and even though I had built up alot of expectations since their outstanding promo/demo material, this release doesen’t seem to fail on me. Not even once. The band have grown up since the promo leaving room for some very interesting parts. I can’t stop listening to “Conquering Death” in the same way I couldn’t stop listening to the promo a few years back. For those not familiar with the band they play atmospheric and melodic black metal. When it comes to arrangements, compositions and so on you will find links to Dimmu Borgir, Old Man’s Child and similar acts, but the great thing about Kråke is that they manage to create their own soundscape and vitality to the tracks. I usually prefer my metal without much use of synths and effects, but it’s impossible not to love this album since it’s brilliantly produced and the melodies are so great that you’ll forget you exist as long as the disc spins. I often get disappointed when a band releases a good promo and I have to wait almost 5 years for the next taste, but in this case it was truly worth the wait. The time was spent well by the band both in the writing process and in the studio with all the arrangements and production, leaving us listeners with an epic album. This is a must have if you’re into symphonic and atmospheric metal, and “Conquering Death” has left a strong mark in a genre that’s far from dead Record Label: Indie Recordings Style: Black Metal
