Over the years, the composer David Moore has led the malleable classical group Bing & Ruth through all kinds of different explorations. Most recently, that resulted in 2017’s No Home Of The Mind. Now, Moore’s about to return with a new collection. Titled Species, it’s an album that delves into a variety of trance-like states, influenced by Moore spending time in the desert and his newfound love of long-distance running. Stereogum Sessions: Johanna Warren Part of the album’s genesis came from time Moore spent away from his home in New York, in California’s Point Dume. “I’d found myself in places unfamiliar enough that I could easily lose all sense of direction, size, and, more than anything, all sense of time,” Moore explained in a statement. “The music I was making became a kind of reflection of these intentional detachments — and a place to mirror that feeling of trance that had pushed them out in the first place.” Though its music has abstract, spiritual concerns, Species also found Bing & Ruth limiting the structures of their work. The album is dominated by the Farfisa organ, with accompaniment by clarinet and double bass played by founding members Jeremy Viner and Jeff Ratner. Trance experiences, and “submitting to the wave” of them, was very much on Moore’s mind. “I suppose what I was moving towards was a way to feel small — a way to feel deeply humble,” he said. “I had always made music in search of some sort of inner peace, but I no longer cared so much to comfort myself. I’d grown tired, it seemed, of looking inward. I wanted to look nowhere.” Along with the announcement, Bing & Ruth have shared “I Had No Dream.” As a first glimpse of Species, it delivers on all the promises of the album’s thematic aims. It’s a spacious, meditative drone, dotted by melodies that flicker like mirages in the deserts that birthed this music. Check it out below.

Tilman Robinson’s third album, CULTURECIDE, is an investigation of the anthropocene; a seven part lamentation for our chaotic world. Tilman Robinson is an Australian composer and sound designer creating electro-acoustic music across a range of genres including classical minimalism, improvised, experimental, electronic and ambient. Tilman’s diverse output focuses on the psychological impact of dense sound employing acousmatic and psychoacoustic principles. His third album CULTURECIDE will be released on Iceland’s Bedroom Community label in April 2020. CULTURECIDE: “...processes that have usually been purposely introduced that result in the decline or demise of a culture, without necessarily resulting in the physical destruction of its bearers.” D Stein CULTURECIDE is a rich sonic collage, harvesting sounds from a range sources including field recordings, medical machines that monitor the human body, traditional instruments and synthesisers, often melted electronically. The result is an unsettling paradox with sounds constantly on the edge of recognition. Each piece references a specific socio- political issue ranging from colonialism to neo-liberalism to climate change and the impending singularity of humans and machines. Far from an answer to these questions, CULTURECIDE invites us to meditate on their place in our life and approach personal understanding. Recorded and produced almost completely in Australia, a land at the forefront of the devastation of climate change, CULTURECIDE was an attempt at catharsis for its author frequently appalled at his country’s incredible apathy and inaction. Mixed by Bedroom Community regular Daniel Rejmer and mastered by Lawrence English, works from the ambitious and unsettling record saw Tilman nominated for the 2019 Melbourne Prize for Music

Black Sarabande expands upon pianist-composer Robert Haigh's beguiling debut for Unseen Worlds with a collection of intimate and evocative piano-led compositions. Haigh was born and raised in the 'pit village' of Worsbrough in South Yorkshire, England. His father, as most of his friends' fathers, was a miner, who worked at the local colliery. Etched into Haigh's work are formative memories of the early morning sounds of coal wagons being shunted on the tracks, distant trains passing, and walking rural paths skirting the barren industrial landscape. The album opens with the title track - a spacious, plaintive piano motif develops through a series of discordant variations before resolving. On 'Stranger On The Lake,' sweeping textures and found sounds lay the foundation for a two chord piano phrase evoking a sense of elegy. 'Wire Horses' is an atmospheric audio painting of open spaces and distant lights. 'Air Madeleine' uses variations in tempo and dynamics to craft the most seductively melodic track on the album. 'Arc Of Crows' improvises on a single major seventh chord, splintering droplets of notes as ghostly wisps of melodic sound slowly glide into view. 'Ghosts Of Blacker Dyke' is a melancholic evocation of Haigh's roots in England's industrial north - intermingling dissonant sounds of industry within a set of languid piano variations. 'Progressive Music' is constructed around a series of lightly dissonant arpeggiated piano chords which modulate through major and minor key changes before resolving at a wistful and enigmatic refrain. In 'The Secret Life of Air', a nocturnal, low piano line slowly weaves its way through the close-miked ambience of the room, nearly halting as each note is allowed to form and reverberate into a blur with the next. The ambitious 'Painted Serpent' calmly begins with drone-like pads and builds with the introduction of counterpoint piano lines and an orchestral collage of sound underpinned by a deliberate bass motif. 'Broken Symmetry' and 'Lady Lazarus' highlight Haigh's gift for blurring the line between dissonance and harmony - opaque piano portraits of moonlight and shadows glancingly evoke the impressionistic palettes of Harold Budd, Debussy and Satie
