Mammal Hands are a trio of like-minded musicians: Nick Smart piano, Jesse Barrett drums and percussion, and Jordan Smart saxophones. Drawing on influences from Steve Reich to Bonobo and Pharoah Sanders to Cinematic Orchestra, alongside elements of North Indian and African music, they produce their own beautiful, inimitable music – at times wistful and melancholic and others raucous and catchy. They evoke a range of moods, from delicate and subtle to explosive and frantic, blending thoughtful compositions with spontaneity and interplay. On the road they have been wooing audiences from the Norwich Arts Centre to Mostly Jazz Birmingham, King’s Place London, Band On The Wall Manchester and most recently Love Supreme Glynde. Indeed it was at Mostly Jazz that the band were heard by Gondwana Records recording artists GoGo Penguin’s bassist Nick Blacka, who liking the band’s unique sound brought them to the attention of label boss Matthew Halsall, who immediately signed them to the label and has now produced their sublime debut album, Animalia, which is released on 15th September. Mammal Hands met in April 2012, while busking in Norwich. They gelled quickly, drawn to each other’s open approach to music making. The brothers Nick and Jordan were already playing together as an electronica duo but with drummer Jesse joining the band they developed a distinctive sound drawing on their love of electronic, contemporary classical, world and jazz music. Drummer Jesse’s knowledge and understanding of Indian Classical music brings a unique/distinctive approach to the rhythmic framework of the band’s tunes. His disciplined study with tabla maestro Sirishkumar has allowed him to develop the ability to explore intricate and complex rhythmic patterns and the freedom to explore time signatures and rhythmic patterns less commonly heard in the western world. Jordan brings a love of DJ culture as well as the influence of Pharoah Sanders to his playing whilst pianist Nick brings a knowledge of classical Jazz harmonies but also a deep interest in the minimalist composers (Terry Riley, Steve Reich) which has influenced his compositional approach, striving to create hypnotic, rhythmic patterns that can provide a foundation for Jordan and Jesse to build on. Still looking to breathe life into the venerable piano trio format, Belgian threesome De Beren Gieren (The Bears Shriek would be one translation) present their fourth album following The Detour Fish (Clean Feed, 2014), A Raveling (De Beren Records, 2013) and Wirklich Welt So (El Negocito, 2012). Leading the charge pianist Fulco Ottervanger helms an unchanged lineup comprising bassist Lieven Van Pee and drummer Simon Segers. Unsurprisingly after such consistent output, they exhibit a robust ensemble concept which avoids emphasis on solo episodes, mashes influences together and challenges convention. An impatient energy pervades the ten cuts. Ottervanger likes to mix it. While a melodist at heart, his preparations on the piano accentuate its percussive nature, heard particularly on "La Laisse Lointaine" and the second of three brief untitled pieces which appear to be improvised moods. Segers recalls Gerald Cleaver in his busy rattle, but also varies his palette with subtle electronics, while Van Pée deftly handles whatever comes his way. But it's hard to get a fix on them as they all cover so much ground so quickly. All the more so as many of the numbers place disparate elements alongside a more straight-ahead core. That's the case in "Rebel Jazz To Rebel Against," in which they initially intersperse outside effects amid a Latin rhythm. A passage of thrumming bass, interlocking meters and insistent bass register piano vamp ensues, which strongly evokes the Craig Taborn Trio in their pomp. By contrast on "Schaduwleven," the improv and textural ideas are interwoven with the pretty tune. After a shimmering start of clanking percussion with restrained electronics, a pellucid piano melody emerges from the clatter. Then minor key lyricism, bass thwack and drum chatter advance as three separate strands, until they eventually cohere for the close. Taborn also seems to be an inspiration on "(De Zachte Jacht Op De) Volkswolf," where the group tends towards the egalitarian trio model. In a ballad form, high arco moaning backs funereal piano, while the drums insert another vaguely Latin groove to add a touch of ambiguity. A crashing interlude of prepared piano and unsettling bass and drums intrudes into more songlike territory. While that intrigues, some of the juxtapositions elsewhere appear arbitrary such as the unison piano/bass exclamations on "La Laisse Lointaine." 180g Pressing. It was a clever move by George Avakian, producer at Atlantic Records, to record live the Charles Lloyd Quartet during their appearance in Monterey, and to release the LP under the title "Forest Flower". Although the hippy flower-power movement tended towards a rather different musical genre at the end of the Sixties, they were blown away by this music. The four artists attracted masses of people and ensured that every seat was taken and all standing room filled at jazz festivals such as Newport, Molde (Norway), Antibes (France) and the Fillmore East and West. The super group also appeared in Monterey, 120 Km south of San Francisco, the centre of the hippy movement, on 18 September 1966. On the LP we have the almost 18-minute-long title piece and the standard work "East Of The Sun", which were recorded at the festival. The disc is complemented by a Keith Jarrett composition and one by Cecil McBee, both of which were recorded in the studio ten days before the festival. Of particular note is the rich interplay, the energy that is palpable throughout, the perfect harmony in each and every change of mood, and the intensity. Even 50 years later, it is quite clear that Charles Lloyd managed to break down the barriers between pop and jazz. Charles Lloyd is committed to this objective to this very day! All four musicians are still active, although they no longer appear together as a group. Such a special treat for the ears is offered by this newly mastered disc only.
