Unstuck In Time" is the new recording by the Motion Collective for A.MA Records, written, arranged, and produced by Gerardo Frisina, after the debut EP “Burak” released in 2014, of which it is the natural continuation, enhancing the original inspiration. There are varied moods, drawing from different musical styles to blend a single sound message where love for music of the past mingles with electronics, to recreate itself in a modern idiom. "Unstuck in Time" is indeed the meaning of this record. Just as Bill Pilgrim, the protagonist of Kurt Vonnegut’s beautiful book “Slaughterhouse Five”, moves back and forth in time, in the same way the compositions of Gerardo Frisina are the summary of a profound reflection on music, which moves expertly among all musical genres to create a perfect distillate with a unique and distinctive flavor. Gerardo skillfully directs a capable group of musicians that not only fulfills his ideas but also instills the music with each musician’s own artistic sensitivity. In this journey through time on the planets of Soul, Jazz, Latin Music, psychedelia and electronics, the foundation is rhythm. Rhythm is what distinguishes all of the music of Gerardo Frisina, since the beginning of his recording and producing career, and this new work is no exception. “Velvet Spear”, “ Enfarte Musical” and “Zagara (Una Mas)” find their inspiration within the Brazilian sound-world without any of the of the obvious clichés of that genre, moving forward enriched, followed by the soulful “Into You” and the sensual and dreaming mood of “Unstuck In Time”, through the psychedelic and voodoo flavor of “Enchanting Drum” and “Voodoo Lust” to reach tomorrow with “Angels “ and “Hoverin’”is where the electronic adventure finds its full realization. With last year’s Gondwana Orchestra album When The World Was One, northern trumpeter and composer Matthew Halsall eloquently blended the tranquil tone-poetry of Alice Coltrane and the jazz intensity of her husband, John, with sounds of a kindred spirit from Japan and the east. Into Forever expands that lineup with a string quartet and the gospel and R&B-infused sound of the powerful Manchester vocalist Josephine Oniyama. The Gondwana Orchestra’s sound palette is frequently gorgeous, and Oniyama’s dramatic presence will undoubtedly broaden their appeal, even if the directness of lyrics may diminish some of their earlier ethereal attraction for some. There are few Australian originals in jazz, but vibraphonist Alan Lee surely ranks among the best. Australian jazz is and always will be an interpretation of the American art form, but throughout his long career Lee has ploughed his furrow undaunted; as he puts it, "What I want is the fire! Whether it's John Coltrane's 'Blues Minor' from Africa/Brass or 'Backwater Blues' by Leadbelly, I want the emotion, the gut wrenching pain, the cry from within!" A musician and bandleader who cut a number of jazz sides for small independent Melbourne labels from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s, Lee has always searched for this fire, evident in the broad styles he's covered throughout his career. From '60s soul jazz to the deep modal sounds of the early '70s and cross-genre experiments exhibited in his chamber jazz, the tracks included in this anthology -- the first of Lee's music -- were recorded by various incarnations of Lee's band and are taken from three albums recorded in 1973 and 1974 -- Lee's sole albums as a bandleader and collectors' items in their own right. The deep modal version of "Love Song" and Freddie Hubbard's perennial spiritual jazz standard "Little Sunflower" are both taken from the 1973 LP The Alan Lee Jazz Quartet. The 1973 album Gallery Concerts 1973, which was recorded for Bruce Clarke's jazz sub-label Cumquat Records, provides us with a fierce electric-jazz version of Igor Stravinsky's "Dance of the Adolescents" from The Rite of Spring, plus the plaintive chamber jazz of John Lewis's "Sketch" as well as two tracks featuring vocalist Jeannie Lewis -- "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" and the beautiful "Bailero." Completing this compendium is a cover of the Milt Jackson-penned "Enchanted Lady" taken from the 1974 follow-up recording for Jazznote, The Smilor. This anthology is filled out by Lee's stories, including his correspondence with fellow vibraphone player Gary Burton on how to achieve advanced extended techniques for the vibraphone (resulting in pages of technical diagrams) and a story about travelling across the US to purchase an original 1940s Deagan Imperial vibraphone from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra "just to get that Milt Jackson sound." There are moments of deep introspection and intellect in Lee's playing; this is emotional music that contains and shares a common spiritual oneness, seeking the thrill Lee experienced after first listening to Lionel Hampton and The Benny Goodman Quartet. The music of saxophonist Nat Birchall joins a long-flowing conversation in jazz. His chosen tongue is that of the spiritualized musical discourse with a vital source that can be found in the sacred testaments of John Coltrane, and which was channeled most directly by his fellow travelers Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders and his wife Alice. Many others followed where Coltrane led, giving voice in music to the esoteric renewal of the soul and mind that lent spiritual strength to the black counterculture and complemented the political radicalism of the late 1960s and 1970s. This rich vein of spirit-music has rarely been tapped by British jazz musicians, and Birchall is one of the few to have been drawn to it with the conviction of heart that it demands. For these are the sonic and spiritual spaces where the colossi of an earlier age declaimed and confessed with sacrificial passion, from within the flames of revolution. Ultimately, it has been the sonic pathways offered by jazz that have provided Birchall with the clearest way to channel the resonances of the higher heights, wherefrom timeless musical messages might be revealed. "It seems to me that's it's the most direct way of tuning in to this higher source," reflects Birchall. "That music seems to me to display this connection to whatever this higher source, this higher energy, might be... You can hear it in other musics to a certain degree sometimes, but this seems to be almost purely of that nature. That's what really motivates me the most." All music is a spiritual communion -- it speaks to the old and the young in a language that is beyond language, it expresses and elicits emotion and thought at once, it is both bodily and mental, noise and silence, intention and accident. It is the dissolution of opposites, the fleeting noise made eternal prayer, the transubstantiation of spirit into sound. Music is the expression of unity, in which difference is both accepted and resolved, and from which a mended world might be born. To make music is, as Roland Kirk observed, to talk with the spirits. We are lucky that the music of Nat Birchall allows us to hear the sounds of their world once more. Double bassist, cellist and composer Oscar Pettiford was one of the true pioneers of his instrument in 1940s and 1950s jazz, being one of the earliest to play in the bebop idiom and, alongside Charles Mingus, remains one of the most recorded bassists of the genre. At the age of 14, Pettiford famously claimed he adopted the bass because of his dissatisfaction as to the way it was played, instead wishing to develop his own style. Pettiford's first major foray into playing professionally came when he joined the band of saxophonist Charlie Barnet in 1942. He left the company of Barnet in 1943 before moving to New York, where he began to play jam sessions at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, meeting other bebop pioneers such as Thelonious Monk in the process. Pettiford would spend much of his time working with many high profile performers of the 40s. Towards the end of the 1940s, Pettiford began to truly embrace his secondary instrument. Pettiford suffered a broken arm during a game of baseball that left him unable to play bass for almost a year. As a result, he tuned a cello loaned to him by a friend to the same bass tuning, only an octave higher, and proceeded to play on that throughout his rehabilitation. Making his first recording on the cello in 1950, he would regard it as his secondary instrument for the remainder of his career, and is often credited with bringing it into the jazz mainstream. Pettiford went on to ply his trade alongside the likes of Thelonious Monk on Brilliant Corners, Kenny Dorham on Jazz Contrasts and Sonny Rollins of Freedom Suite, before relocating to Copenhagen, Denmark. With appearances from the likes of Lucky Thompson, Coleman Hawkins and Kenny Clarke, the music contained on these five discs will continue to delight old and new jazz fans alike. American drummer and bandleader Chico Hamilton was one of the biggest names in West Coast jazz, if not the genre as a whole. Never wishing to settle in one area for too long, Hamilton's experimentation with band arrangements and instrumentation left a lasting imprint on the musical world, and led to him working on film scores and commercial jingles, alongside more than 50 studio albums during the course of his lifetime. He made his first recordings as leader with the Chico Hamilton Trio in 1953, and these would form part of his eponymously titled 1956 album on Pacific Jazz; the trio evolved into a quintet in 1955. The group would cause something of a stir in the jazz community with its unusual line-up of Buddy Collette on saxophones, flute and clarinet, Jim Hall on guitar, Carson Smith on bass and Fred Katz on cello - one of the first uses of the instrument in the jazz idiom . Their first album as a four piece, Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Buddy Collette (Pacific Jazz, 1956) was one side live and one side studio recorded, and quickly became popular amongst 'cool jazz' fans in particular. Hamilton and his group continued to gain momentum as the decade progressed, and would go on to appear alongside Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis in the 1957 film Sweet Smell of Success in 1957. By the end of the 50s the quintet had put out a dozen albums, by which time the addition of pioneering free jazz saxophonist, flautist and bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy had a profound effect on Hamilton, who would continue to experiment with avant-garde elements into the following decade. This five CD boxed set contains the entirety of Chico Hamilton's recorded output during his formative yet undoubtedly crucial early years, 1955 - 1958. With over six hours of music and featuring 10 fully remastered albums in total, this collection provides a fascinating and thoroughly exhilarating insight into the evolving sound of one of the finest drummers and bandleaders in American jazz history.
