The early 80s were prolific for Hideki Matsutake. As the go-to keyboard programmer for the Tokyo music scene, he worked on Akiko Yano's Gohan Ga Dekitayo, YMO's BGM, Ryuichi Sakamoto's B-2 Unit, Mkwaju Ensemble's Mkwaju and found time to record two Logic System albums in 1981. While the first album, Logic had a harder techno feel, the second one Venus was different affair. Recorded in Los Angeles at the new state of the art Yamaha Studio, it was loosely themed on the Greek goddess Venus and had a funkier more organic sound. For the album Matsutake had asked a handful of American musicians to provide songs he would then add his synth magic touch to. Michael Boddicker, Don Grusin, Nathan East and Roger Powell duly complied and also played on the album.The updated sound was achieved by switching from the Moog III to the E-mu modular System (which Matsutake brought over to LA) and other synths like the Prophet 5, the Roland MC-8 and TR 808 and the Yamaha GS-1, a forerunner of the DX7.The result is an amazing futuristic mix of electronic music and early 80s funk, announcing many genres to come, from techno and house to French electro and Vaporwave. From the breezy ambient synth of I Love You to the city pop edge of Be Yourself (originally written by Nathan East for Debra Laws) and the vocoder-led Daft Punk-ish Take A Chance, Venus is a fascinating album that both pushes the boundaries of electronic music and is yet strangely accessible and beautiful.The other key elements of Venus is the artwork designed by Japanese legendary illustrator Pater Sato. Sato had started in Japan in the early 70s doing many album covers for Japanese artists including Tatsuro Yamashita's cult Spacy LP before moving to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in fashion and advertising. His airbrush style became hugely influential over the years and in 2018, Stella McCartney dedicated a whole Men’s collection based on his Venus. Star make up artist Pat McGrath also regularly posts his artwork to her 3 million fans on her instagram.The original album came with a beautiful 8-panel insert illustrated by Sato which Wewantsounds has reproduced on this deluxe reissue also featuring remastered sound, OBI strip and a second insert featuring credits and line up plus liner notes by Hashim Bharoocha. The notes feature an exclusive interview with Hideki Matsutake reminiscing about the making of this visionary album which Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue.

'All The Time', Jessy Lanza's first album since 2016's 'Oh No', is the most pure set of pop songs that she and creative partner Jeremy Greenspan have recorded, reflective and finessed over time and distance. Innovative juxtapositions sound natural, like rigid 808s rubbing against delicate chords in 'Anyone Around', subtle footwork flutter giving a nervous energy to 'Face', unusual underwater rushes underpinning 'Baby Love'. The songs also sound more "live" than ever before. Jessy's voice is treated, re-pitched and edited on songs like 'Ice Creamy' and gestural sounds seem to respond to her lyrics in songs such as 'Like Fire', which reward the listener on repeated plays. More than previous albums, the lyrics on 'All The Time' became an important focus for Jessy too, channelling the negativity of anger and frustration arising from some significant changes in her personal situation into the text. These lyrics sometimes process raw feelings, which aren't obvious to begin with, but are soon felt, standing in stark contrast to the cushioned settings of the music. 'All The Time' has ended as a triumph and an abstracted diary of a sometimes difficult, but enduring friendship and creative relationship, and it's their best work yet.

INDIE SHUFFLE_.Koyo Return With sophomore album 'You Said It' released on 26th June 2020. "We were attracted to the ambiguity of the phrase," explains frontman Huw Edwards. "Originally it was inspired by the notion that once something has been said between two people, once certain boundaries have been crossed, it can sometimes be impossible to move on. You can try to backtrack, but trust is already undermined and relationships damaged. Or maybe a truth was spoken and 'You Said It' represents a kind of catchphrase - a final coming-to-terms with the fact that a relationship has become un-saveable." Relationship breakdown and loss are themes that thread their way through this album, as is an overall sense of coming-of-age. From the straight-up no nonsense statement of intent of album opener 'Same Mistake Twice', to the triumphant driving rock of 'Surrounded' - which deals with the theme of needing to get away after a breakup - to the claustrophobic 'Out of Control'. According to the band, the various faces in the album artwork, "represent the many facets of someone's personality; the underlying layers beneath the visible surface that can become disorientating and untrustworthy," as explored on 'Circles' and 'Ostracised'. "Like walking through a hall of mirrors and being unable to distinguish between truth and illusion." Following the instrumental "palette cleanser" 'Murmur', 'Confused' returns to the band's more traditional prog sound, with an epic chorus. By far the darkest track on the album both sonically and lyrically is 'Obelisk', which deals with a different sort of break up, this time observing that of cult etiquette. 'Rolling in my Head' was written, "right in the middle of the grieving stage of a break up," Huw says. "Hopefully there's a rawness there that people can relate to." Album closer 'Against All Odds' is an epic, energetic 8-minute wig-out. Formed in Leeds in 2015, KOYO have fast become a major force in the city's thriving alternative scene. A powerful live act, the band create sonic spectacles through soaring layers of sound. This electric show has blown away audiences at Reading & Leeds, Download, Ramblin' Man, Live At Leeds and Camden Rocks Festivals.
