Highly respected as a DJ as well, the Berlin-based selector is now a regular at clubs such as Panorama Bar and Robert Johnson. Earlier in 2012 Mannion made his first appearance on German label Permanent Vacation with the Mountains EP. He'll stick with the imprint for his debut album, Changing Days. The LP sees him largely abandoning conventional house tempos and structures in favour of a more song-based approach that prominently features his own vocals. Mannion claims that his aim with the record was to "[have] an emotional resonance without being overly sentimental or schmaltzy... add something to [listeners'] lives that's more than a hands in the air 5 AM moment in a club." Lloyd Cole is an english singer and songwriter, known for his role as lead singer of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions from 1984 to 1989, and for his subsequent solo work. Hans-Joachim Roedelius is a legendary figure in krautrock and avant-garde electronic music. He was founding member of the seminal bands Cluster and Harmonia. How curious it is that this collaboration should come about so late in the day and how marvellous that it transpired at all. Cole and Roedelius did not actually meet in the studio, choosing instead a mode of material exchange more in keeping with the age, sending files across the ether for the other to complement. However paradoxical it may sound, "Selected Studies Vol. 1" is reminiscent of the music of Claude Debussy, if electronic instrumentation had been available to him 120 years earlier. Highly impressionistic images flicker around the listener, airy, transparent, lost in time, each its own window on a bright, yet mysterious world. Far removed from kitsch, ambient and feel-good music, "Selected Studies Vol. 1" demands to be listened to attentively if the serious artistic expression of these two musicians / composers is to be appreciated fully. This opens up the album's beauty and depth. Cole and Roedelius seek to present fantastic, aural topographies in opposition to the dullness of the real world, inviting us to enter a friendly labyrinth of constant surprise, a place one can still leave at any time, without fear of getting hopelessly lost. The Welsh producer is probably best known for his full-length collaboration with Doc Daneeka earlier this year, They! Live. That album presented a hybrid of UK bass-style house and techno, which we described in a review as "stylishly minimal beats rendered in attractive curves and clear, soft tones." Damage has also been active as a solo artist, however, releasing tracks on Ten Thousand Yen as well as a solo single on 50 Weapons in October. As it turns out, that single was a taster for his full-length on the same label, which features "Swarm" along with nine previously unreleased tracks.
