Footprintz will release their debut album on Visionquest in March. Entitled Escape Yourself, the 12-track opus will be the first full-length from Clarian North and Adam Hunter, who met in Montreal aged 15. It's due out on Visionquest, the label run by Lee Curtiss, Ryan Crosson, Seth Troxler and Shaun Reeves. So far Visionquest has been the main home for the Canadian duo's signature brand of woozy synth-pop, having released their debut 12-inch in 2011 and two subsequent EPs—The Favourite Game and Dangers Of The Mouth—last year. A press release quotes North and Hunter as saying: "We wanted to work around a concept of escaping the confused years of growing up. 16-25, those are the years where you’re figuring yourself out, going through the motions of meeting different people and finding new things". With his second release for Planet Mu this year, Dream On is more of a full-length outing for Ital aka Daniel Martin-McCormick and a much more substantial record than the very popular and widely critically acclaimed Hive Mind. On Dream On Ital takes his experimentation with house and techno forms even further, creating impressionistic deconstructions from the tropes of early house and techno. Sunny chords, laid back drum shuffle and rhythmic vocal loops are picked apart and threaded with a rich psychodrama of delirious textures, tidal chords and uneasy roughness and dissonance. Having spent over 20 weeks on the road since the completion of Hive Mind, Dream On reflects the raw energy of the live show and the touring mindset: the heady, dream-feel of house, cut with both dubs fracturing smear and an understanding of the power of distortion, honed from years working in DIY and noise. Despot starts the album with a trancey bassline punctuated with off-key vocal stabs, the form of the track brutally prized apart with pitch-shifting seasick chords. Its the records longest track, and a powerful opener. Bois mix of stuttering vocal loops, aqueous chords and frantic drums is tainted with sorrow and loss. Its got a nervous energy, always feeling like its going to topple in on itself, lapsing from ravey propulsion into nauseated hiss and back again. Eat Shit (Waterfalls Mix) is broken and distressed techno in miniature, making the most of distortion and echo to create shimmer and splinters of noise over rough, murky percussion. The dark center of the album, Enrique, strips things back to a cavernous ambience with molasses-slow vocals and a heartbeat drum, building into pulsing tones and scratching noise pulled across the spectrum. Nottingham"s Mimm Recordings present another hidden gem from the UK"s electronic music scene with Bristolian Ooko making his debut release on the label. With his first major introduction to the scene being through a track called ,Understand" on a free compilation from the label last year, he"s now ready to unleash the cheekily-titled ,Sex Sells" EP which references a wide spectrum of dance music from house to jungle and beyond. Opening up with a raucous and utterly rhythmic ode to early ,90s jungle with pitched down breakbeat drum patterns and brutal percussion fading in and out for the duration, ,Downtown" has an unrelenting thump that is sure to rattle a few club monitors in the months to come. The vocal sample of ,Downtown" is looped throughout the track and only expands during the breakdown to increase the tension for the second drop, which nods to the polyrhythmic stylings of Addison Groove, Machinedrum and Pearson Sound. Fellow Bristolians My Nu Leng lend their production skills to a remix of title track ,Sex Sells" which falls more into broken techno territory with it"s crisp percussion and erratic arrangement. A more up-tempo effort than the original, it sees the the duo add their harder-edged dubstep influence into the track"s pores. The original version of ,Sex Sells" is a far more patient affair and possesses the seductive slo-mo Bristol House bounce that has been so ubiquitous as of late. Low-end basslines compliment the groove whilst the delayed synths towards the tracks climax add a sense of dramatic edge to an otherwise club-focused EP.
