The two concerts captured on this remarkable CD and DVD set are superb evocations of a band before and after major change. Duesseldorf sees the most successful, major label Runrig lineup coming to the end of its run, with Donnie Munro making one of his last stands as lead vocalist and frontman, before leaving the band, ambitious to begin a political career as a Member of the UK Parliament. He stood as a Labour Party candidate for his native constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West but was defeated two occasions. By the time of the Cologne concert, Bruce Guthro had settled into his role as the new frontman of Runrig, made it his own and been warmly accepted by fans. 1997 saw both the ending of the 'old' Runrig and their departure from London-based label Chrysalis. But it also saw the 1997 referendum a devolved parliament for Scotland and a vote for that assembly to be established in Edinburgh. New beginnings were everywhere, and Scotland was ready to embrace Bruce, and the 'new' Runrig he fronted. It did. And so did the rest of Europe. Germany in particular had always welcomed Runrig's brand of powerhouse Celtic rock with open arms, and the winter tour in 2001, supporting the "Stamping Ground" album which saw Bruce fully integrated into the band, was a triumph. So, in a different way, was that 1996 outing, also in the depths of winter. The power and sweetness of Donnie's vocals, and the sense of bearing witness to -stage relationships forged decades previously in the dancehalls and marquees of the Highlands and Islands, is overwhelming and beguiling. Bringing the two concerts together in one package offers an irresistible opportunity to contrast and compare. Runrig ended their career in style at the "Last Dance" concerts beneath the battlements of Stirling Castle in 2018. After 45 years, it was all over, at least in terms of live performance. The band have made a massive contribution to Scottish and European culture, and the way have provided concertgoers with many joyous, moving experiences, two of which are captured here. Duesseldorf in 1996 and Cologne in 2001 saw two Runrigs, both performing brilliantly, and it is both instructive and moving watch these two bands which, are in the end, one. Shirley Collins releases Heart's Ease, her second album for Domino. Heart’s Ease follows 2016’s Lodestar; which on its arrival, seemed like a musical miracle - an enthralling new LP from a woman who is widely acknowledged as England’s greatest female folk singer, but who had not recorded an album for 38 years. With Heart’s Ease, Shirley delivers a record even stronger than Lodestar having completely regained her confidence, and singing so well that you can’t believe she was away for so long. Recorded at Metway in Brighton, Heart’s Ease is as compelling and original as Shirley’s great albums from the Sixties and Seventies. There are traditional songs, of course, from England and the USA, but there are also more new songs than in the past (four non-traditional tracks) and there’s even a burst of experimentation that hints at possible new directions to come. Wondrous Love comes from an 18th Century English ballad about the infamous sea captain William Kidd, who was hanged for piracy in 1701. Collins first heard the hymn at a Sacred Harp Convention in Alabama (Collins and Alan Lomax recorded it on their field recording trip in 1959). Collins’ intriguing choice of songs on Heart’s Ease includes two with lyrics by her first husband Austin John Marshall, a graphic artist and poet who produced several of her albums and had the inspired idea of getting Shirley to work with blues / jazz / world music guitarist Davy Graham on that extraordinary album Folk Roots, New Routes in 1964. There are more family memories with Locked In Ice, written by Dolly’s son the late Buz Collins and the most startling new piece is the finale, Crowlink, named after a pathway on the South Downs overlooking the English Channel “where I love to be,” in which Shirley sings against a moody, atmospheric fusion of Ossian Brown’s hurdy-gurdy, and electronica and field recordings of waves and sea birds from Matthew Shaw. Heart’s Ease is a glorious reminder that Shirley Collins is still in a class of her own, both as a folk singer with a distinctive no-nonsense style that is all her own, and as an innovator

Remastered from the original analog tapes - LP bonus track "Love At First Sight" first time on vinyl - New liner notes by John DeAngeles // When The Shaggs' Philosophy Of The World came out in 1969, some people couldn't or wouldn't understand it. But many musicians, including Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain, cited the Shaggs as a major influence. Heck, Zappa exclaimed they were "better than the Beatles!" NRBQ's Terry Adams and Keith Spring were such fans, and after reissuing Philosophy in 1980 on their own Red Rooster label, Adams began work on a collection of recordings the Wiggin sisters had made in the years following their debut. The result was Shaggs' Own Thing - a beguiling follow-up that reveals a more developed and mature sound while still retaining all of their homespun uniqueness. "The songs were better and they were recorded better, so it naturally made a better album," Dot Wiggin said shortly after the original release of Shaggs' Own Thing in 1982. It's a "natural, organic extension" of the utterly original sound that The Shaggs had created, intentionally or not, with Philosophy Of The World, as John DeAngelis writes in the new liner notes. While Dot Wiggins originals like "You're Somethin' Special To Me" and "My Cutie," and covers of classic songs like "Yesterday Once More" reveal a maturity not displayed on the debut, the two versions of "Shaggs' Own Thing" and the revisiting of "My Pal Foot Foot" show that The Shaggs lost none of their pure and honest charm over the years. Remastered from the original tapes with liner notes by John DeAngelis, this reissue includes the bonus track "Love at First Sight," first issued on the 1988 Red Rooster/Rounder Shaggs CD and appears on LP for the first time.
