LP is Gatefold sleeve and black vinyl. LONE WOLF began life in 2009 in various dusty rooms and tape studios around Sweden where Paul Marshall (aka LONE WOLF) pulled his songs and ideas slowly together with the assistance of Kristofer Jonson from Jeniferever. After a month of various field recordings, sneaking into concert halls late at night to use the piano, setting up their gear in small village churches, and other places they could find, the basic album tracks were done. The resulting album, "The Devil And I", LONE WOLF's debut, was released on Bella Union in mid-2010 to welcome arms. A new singer-songwriter to behold was born that day. A year followed of Paul sharpening his teeth on the road, looking for a leaner, more focussed sound; one he could truly call his own. Sharing stages across the UK, USA and Europe alongside friends and fellow sonic sculptors Wild Beasts, Radiohead's Phil Selway, The Invisible and more and playing both solo and with a full band, the seeds of LONE WOLF's second chapter were sewn. Throughout 2011 Paul meticulously crafted a new creative template he could draw from, pooling all his experience thus far into a new melting pot; with the aim of creating music free of immediate categorisation. He called upon the talents once again of engineer James Kenosha and producer Jon Fougler to make an experimental yet definitive statement of an artist willing to push his own boundaries and also an audience's pre-conceptions. Putting narrative and his powerful vocals front and centre, the rest of the sonic canvas was free to paint as was his will. The first fruits of this labour comes in the form of "The Lovers". Using powerful percussion, Paul's adept skills on 6-string (electric) guitar and the soaring backing vocals of XL Recordings' Blue Roses, "The Lovers" is a lean lover and fighter of a record, stripping back the role and sound of a singer songwriter and heading into a territory that only the likes of Mark Hollis have dared tread. Canadian heartbreak rockers ACRES OF LIONS consist of Jeff Kalesnikoff (vocals, guitar), Tyson Yerex (keyboard, guitar), Dan Ball (bass) and Shane Deyotte (drums). They are based in Victoria, Canada, coyly describe themselves as "a pop-rock band" and have cannily hooked up with not one, but two labels - Alcopop! and fierce panda - for this, the UK release of their second album. "Collections". The panda brings the beefy biscuits, Alcopop! bring the indiepowerpop panache. "Collections" was launched in ACRES OF LIONS' home wilderness late last year. It is a broken-heart-on-sleeve collection aha of taut-fitting tunes with driving guitars, delicate pianos and subtle-yet-heroic choruses. Listeners of a certain age may hear flashes of 0s era collegiate rocksters like Buffalo Tom and Gigolo Aunts in there. Listeners of a slightly different rage may recall the emo years of the early noughties when The Get Up Kids and Jimmy Eat World made grown men creep. Musical lovers with very little rage whatsoever may even feel some of that Snow Patrol emotion in the odd sorrowful climax. Heartbreak, working shitty jobs to survive and the loneliness of public transport in a city, Craig Dermody knows no other way than heart-on-sleeve. Paying bills, selling paintings, going to work, smoking cigarettes, thinking rationally - Craig Dermody's difficulty performing these mundane actions is well documented on "Para Vista Social Club", the debut album from his revolving-cast Australian band SCOTT & CHARLENE'S WEDDING. Originally pressed up to just 200 copies with each sleeve painted by Dermody himself, these have now long since sold out, however the album will be reissued worldwide by London label Critical Heights in November 2012. "Para Vista Social Club" (named for the Adelaide suburb in which Dermody grew up) is an off-the-cuff collection of real-life woes, each song spilling out like a soused diary entry. Dermody wrote the songs faithfully about his experiences and from there enlisted a backing band that knew not to overcomplicate the rusty, grunge-damaged appeal of the songs. And so we have guitarist Luke Horton (Love of Diagrams), bassist Jarrod Quarrel (St Helens, Lost Animal), and drummer Dion Nania (Panel of Judges) channeling the Velvet Underground and The Wipers against Dermody's slurred singing and name-checking of specific Melbourne transit lines, often the site of his melancholic self-reflection. After "Para Vista Social Club"'s original Australian self-release, Dermody headed to America indefinitely, putting this particular incarnation of the band on ice. Now based in New York, the band keeps changing and Dermody keeps writing songs under the name Scott and Charlene's Wedding. There will be a new album in early 2013. Despite Dermody's relative inexperience playing guitar and writing songs his musical CV consists of sharing lead vocals in Spider Vomit and playing bass in the scrappy Lindsey Low Hand, the songs on "Para Vista Social Club" aren't short and simple. They're long, knotty jams, often digging into a single idea and not looking up for the next few minutes with Dermody's voice ranging from a rough moan on "Born To Lose" and speech-like drawl on "Every Detail" to a bummed flatness on "Foreign Lands" and a surprisingly clean presence on the poppy "Wiseman At The Station". "Footscray Station" is the album's breakout track, a shuddering feat of shaggy-dog jangle and perfectly bruised lyrics, leading directly on to another train-themed song, "Epping Line", a crawl of a song documenting Dermody's own crawl to work as well as a demoralising phone conversation with his father. A lot of the themes are well trodden to say the least - heartbreak, working shitty jobs to survive, and the loneliness of public transit in a city - but the delivery is so wincing and unpolished that it socks you in the gut before you can call it cliché. "Para Vista Social Club" is sludgy and hypnotic and true; an undisguised catalogue of the licks we take in our youth. When Dermody sings, "I think I lost my soul/But I found it again in rock'n'roll", it's not just an easy rhyme we've all heard before. Live recordings don’t tell lies (or at least only small ones). Presuming that there’s very little post-production studio modification of the original recording other than to mix the tracks, what you hear is a performance; with all its peaks and valleys; beauty and power; moments of inspiration and brilliance; and of course all of its stumbles and mistakes, all left intact. In the case of Berlin, The Walkabouts first “official” release of a live recording in the band’s thirty year history, all of this and more is true. A little over half the songs on Berlin are taken from albums The Walkabouts have recorded over the past decades, and the rest of the tracks are culled from the band’s latest album Travels In The Dustland. Berlin is a compelling collection of old and new; the old approached with a desire to reinvent; in a sense to tell old stories in a new way, and the new songs presenting a band at the peak of its artistic performance. The album was recorded on July 14th, 2012 at the C-Club in Berlin, thus the title. The lineup of the band consists of founding members Carla Torgerson (vocals, guitar) and Chris Eckman (vocals, guitar), long running members Terri Moeller (drums), Glenn Slater (keyboards) and Michael Wells (bass) and newest member Paul Austin (guitar) who joined the band prior to the recording of Travels in the Dustland. Berlin is a document of a band that has never taken the easy road; a band that has lived long and at times hard, and lived to tell; a band that refuses to become complacent; a band that continues to reinvent itself. This is the reunited Guided By Voices' third album of 2012, in case you had lost count. Right off, from the opening track "King Arthur the Red," with its full-throated riffery, slam-tastic drums, and even some show-offy lead guitar shredding, it's evident that GBV Mach 2 may just now be hitting its stride. The progression is not dissimilar to the one the band made from the classic "Alien Lanes" album to its 1996 high-water mark "Under The Bushes, Under The Stars", both in terms of longer, more fleshed-out songs and let's call it a semi-pro approach to recording fidelity. For all the well-deserved acclaim GBV's first two records this year have garnered, "The Bears For Lunch" is a step up in every sense. This isn't to say there's a whole lotta gloss going on, and certainly the album has its share of more casually considered songs, but from the relentless drum figure that fuels sure-fire-live-staple and obvious single "Hangover Child" ("the best thing [drummer] Kevin [Fennell]'s ever played" sez Pollard) to the chugging, melancholic, melody-mad "White Flag" ("I think you know this time it's real," Bob sings over an almost New Order-ish bass line) to the propulsive, early-R.E.M.-inflected album closer "Everywhere Is Miles From Everywhere," the 19-song 43-ish minutes long Bears delivers a gut-punch as sure and assured as anything the band's ever dished out. And that's without mentioning the stellar contributions of Tobin Sprout ("The Corners Are Glowing" and "Waving At Airplanes" are particular standouts), bouts of unrestrained whimsy like "The Military School Dance Dismissal," featuring what sounds like seven Robert Pollards singing in unison/harmony over a Beatle-esque piano line, the punning workplay of "She Lives In An Airport," or the staggering work of heart-breaking genius "You Can Fly Anything Right." Add to this Pollard's two excellent 2012 solo albums, a raft of festival appearances and some club touring, and you have possibly the most consistently productive output ever in one year from a band and a songwriter already noted for its/his insanely prolific nature. That said, in a year of highlights, "The Bears For Lunch" may well take the most cake CD, Album
