Lightning have been whipping up a storm in Japan since 2006 and 'Road To Ninja' is the step forward they hope will give them more of a global presence. This latest long playing beast of oriental beats from the power metal five piece certainly lit up my morning like a rising sun. Musically it shoots straight from the speakers to hit you like a pearl necklace and anyone who harbours feelings for fast and furious Dragonforce style modern metal will lap this right up. A fair few of the songs here date back throughout Lightning's history so we're getting a nice slice of the very best stuff the band has to offer. The brutal 'Soldier Force' from 2011 release 'Justice Strike' and the fantastically titled 'Heavy Metal (Of Destiny)' from the earlier 'Five Rings' album stand shoulder to shoulder like dedicated warriors corralling Lightning's strongest elements into a perfectly honed fighting squad of ten blistering tracks. Founding member Iron-Chino (not a trouser care instruction) takes care of all the writing here bar 'Stand Alone' which is home to some dedicated lyrics from the pen of Amanda Somerville. That in itself makes for a top moment in my book, especially as it features a special guest performance from Avantasia's Oliver Hartmann to take it that extra mile. Influences from bands like Gamma Ray and Hammerfall can also be found stitched through some of the more melodic choruses that litter the 'Road To Ninja' while guitar solos scream and soar like leather-clad pterodactyls high overhead. I would say that the production could do with being a tad thicker though. For such powerful music played with passion and energy the sound is a bit of a let down and sounds as weak as paper walls in places. But that aside it's the songs that speak for themselves and they all translate extremely well. Lightning show flashes of brilliance along the 'Road To Ninja', let's hope they can safely make the leap to the next level.

It's a bit hard to pin down where IMPLORE are really from. The band members live mainly in Hamburg these days, but lead vocalist and bass player Gabriel Dubko was born in Argentina, and has lived in Barcelona, LA and Hamburg. This is where he met guitarist Daniel at the train station, after a gig at the legendary Rote Flora - squat, and this random encounter gave birth to IMPLORE. A few weeks later, Heaven Shall Burn's Christian Bass joined the band as a drummer, and this was the first line-up of the three-piece. Due to his commitments to HSB, Bass couldn't record IMPLORE's first EP "Black Knell", so Dubko got Suffocation's Kevin Talley to track drums instead - not a 2nd rate replacement at all. ,Black Knell", released on July 4th 2014, was furiously celebrated in the grindcore and crust scene and instantly opened up a lot of doors and touring opportunities for the band. A European tour with Californian power-violence band ACxDC was getting booked at a time when IMPLORE had not even played a single show yet. The band stood their live-ground during this first tour, with shows opening for Nails and Festivals like Obscene Extreme & Fluff. More tours followed, and with Michael Pfeffer joining the band as a permanent live drummer, IMPLORE finally had a solid line-up. ,Depopulation" is the first album of this very young band, that in its less than 2 years of existence has already toured Europe several time, as well as the US and even Mexico. ,I have never seen such a dedicated and passionate audience like in Monterey", Dubko recalls, ,we were treated like metal gods". The band recorded with Earthship's Jan Oberg at his Hidden Planet studios in Berlin, and Christian Bass from Heaven Shall Burn behind the drumkit once more. The album's 16 tracks clock in at just under 30 minutes: ,Depopulation" has everything you want a solid grindcore album to have: gnarly riffs, super fast blast beat attacks, harsh, feisty vocals and that particular Swedish guitar tone we all love so much. In a matter of two years, Man the Machetes has gone from playing small venues in their home country, Norway, to playing festivals like Pstereo and Hove, being awarded Ukas Urørt by the Norwegian radio broadcasters, NRK P3, and warming up for bands like Gallows and Kvelertak. They started out as five friends in an old German bunker who wanted to play the music they loved. They soon started mixing elements of hardcore, Rock n' Roll, metal and pop to create unique party tunes sparkling with energy. In August 2012, they took the next step, going to Toronto, Canada, to work with producer Eric Ratz on their upcoming album, scheduled for release in January 2013. The album was recorded during four intense weeks, seeing the band working like maniacs to do their songs justice on record. Eric Ratz has previously worked with bands like Billy Talent, Cancer Bats and Comeback Kid, and he provided the experience and skills needed to make it a truly great debut album. The album presents music that balances delicately between an uncompromising, but accessible sound. The pace is high from the beginning to the very end, yet the listener is bombarded with melodies and catchy guitar riffs in a soundscape that is borderline rock and metal. If you add screaming vocals, a thumping, but melodic bass and intense drums, you are closing in on a good description of Man the Machetes' debut album "Idiokrati". Live, the band has made itself heard, building a reputation as an energetic and dedicated bunch, always giving their best. The vocalist Christopher I. is often seen wriggling on the floor at the end of shows, screaming his guts out at everyday stupidity. Like the bloggers at Clashmusic write about their gig at Pstereo in 2011: "the chuncky guitars and growling vocals act like a magnetic force pulling the audience to the front of the small stage."

In February 2015, the 3rd album from Krakow, amaran, was released, followed by great reviews. Pentagram new studio album ‘Curious Volume! Legendary U.S. heavy/doom metal band Pentagram reunites with Peaceville Records for its new studio album, Curious Volume, to be released 28th August. Featuring 11 classic heavy metal compositions with catchy hooks from core band members Victor Griffin, Greg Turley, and Bobby Liebling (Pete Campbell on the drums completes the band’s lineup), the album was recorded with Swedish producer Mattias Nilsson at studios located in Maryland and Virginia. Additional recording took place in Tennessee with Grammy-Award-winning producer Travis Wyrick, who also produced Pentagram’s previous album, Last Rites. The album’s cover artwork was provided courtesy of Richard Schouten. To support the new album, the band has tours planned in North America and Europe throughout 2015/2016. Formed in the early 1970s with a debut album, Relentless, releasing in 1985, Pentagram has survived through more than four decades filled with adversity and triumph to become the legendary international act it is today, firmly stamping its name into the heavy metal history books. Although once viewed as a cult act but with a strong and dedicated global fan base, Pentagram has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity due in part to the 2011 documentary, Last Days Here, which follows the trials and tribulations of a troubled rock star, Pentagram’s lead singer Bobby Liebling. With a DVD release set for this fall on Peaceville’s label, the documentary has garnered international recognition on the film festival circuit and has won several awards, including “Best Music Documentary” at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam. The band recently released their double DVD collection ‘All Your Sins’, featuring over 7 hours of live footage spanning a period of three decades.
