Everything Is Recorded is the new collaborative artist project from record producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell. With Russell at the helm, his west London studio ‘The Copper House’ has become a creative second home for a revolving cast of vocalists and musicians who pass through to write, record and share ideas, mixing traditional recording sessions with extended, uninhibited live jams. Close But Not Quite EP is Everything Is Recorded’s debut recorded statement and is a captivating snapshot of the kind of collaboration and experimentation that has taken place at The Copper House. Across five tracks, the EP is a soundsystem influenced mix of brand new talent and established names, featuring an eclectic host of artists including Sampha, Giggs, Obongjayar, Tic, Warren Ellis, Infinite, Mela Murder, Green Gartside and Baluji Shrivastav. EP opener Close But Not Quite marries Sampha and Curtis Mayfield, the former’s distinctive vocal wrapped around a sample of Mayfield’s 1970 The Makings Of You. Early This Morning links Peckham and Harlem, with Giggs delivering trademark hard bars over a recontextualisation of Gil Scott-Heron’s 2010 Me and the Devil (also produced by Russell). Washed Up On The Shore introduces Nigerian-born, UK-based newcomer Obongjayar alongside drones from the legendary Nick Cave collaborator Warren Ellis, while D’elusion invites Staten Island to west London with Infinite and Mela Murder on lead and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside on backing vocals. All – including EP - closing instrumental The Rhythm Of Life And Death – are brought together under Russell’s inclusive, idiosyncratic production vision. Peter Perrett - former frontman of The Only Ones - releases his debut solo album How The West Was Won through Domino. Perrett, whose incisive songcraft and sardonic drawl made him one of the most distinctive voices of the Seventies hasn’t released any music for 20 years. Bearing in mind his most famous song began “I always flirt with death” (Another Girl, Another Planet), this is one comeback that nobody saw coming. In the hands of certain songwriters, a story of resurrection and redemption might ring a little hollow, but when the songwriter is Peter Perrett, the usual rules have never applied. Perrett makes each song on How The West Was Won sound natural and effortless, as though he were continuing a briefly interrupted conversation rather than picking up the threads of a solo career that faltered two decades ago. He claims to have barely touched a guitar in the decade between The One’s 1996 album Woke Up Sticky and the 2007 reunion of The Only Ones; with Perrett, a hiatus could so easily turn into a hibernation. Yet Perrett’s familiar voice sounds like it simply stepped out of the room for a few minutes and popped back in again. Backed by his sons - Jamie and Peter Jr. on lead guitar and bass respectively - and produced by Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), Peter’s intuitive feel for words; his flair for idiosyncratic metaphors and his deadpan wit are all still as sharp as ever. As demonstrated perfectly by the title track and album opener. It finds him railing against American imperialism and celebrity culture. The songs on How The West Was Won examine complex emotional terrain and extreme human behaviour, shot through as always with wry self-analysis. In a sense the album is a Perrett family affair: there are love songs (An Epic Story, C Voyeurger) from Peter to his wife of 47 years Zena. On Something In My Brain, Perrett discusses good choices, bad choices and ultimately the only choices that will guarantee survival. There are also songs where Perrett opens his curtains and stares out into a much-changed world (Man Of Extremes, Sweet Endeavour). How The West Was Won finds Perrett with energy in his blood, rediscovering the importance of rock’n’roll. The reissue of Mountains Of Time, originally released by SAVOY (Paul Waaktaar-Savoy of A-HA), specially remastered by Joe Lambert to capture a previously unheard crispness and dynamic range, marks the first time it has appeared on vinyl and digitally. Mountains Of Time was released in August 1999 and went on to sell 50000 copies in Norway alone and won a Norwegian Grammy ( Spellemannspris) for best pop album. The LP version is a Gatefold , 180 gram, Limited to 500 copies and it also contains the CD. Savoy is indeed a very different band than A-ha, which is alternative rock with a more organic and timeless sound. THE COMPLETE SHOW RECORDED AT THE MARQUEE LONDON IN 1973 The 1980 Floor Show (a pun on the song ‘1984’) was the first appearance by David Bowie since his much publicised retirement on 3rd July 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon. It was also to be his last appearance as Ziggy Stardust. The show itself was a spectacular stage production that was filmed over three days, mostly at The Marquee Club, Soho, London, for the American NBC TV late night show The Midnight Special. The idea for the show came when Bowie was approached by Burt Sugarman to create something for The Midnight Special rock series.  Bowie's idea was a highly theatrical cabaret extravaganza featuring him and various rock groups and artists, performing in a futuristic setting. The result was edited down to fit the one-hour rock series slot and was shown on American NBC-TV on 16th November 1973. Apart from a short segment used on Top Of The Pops, it has never been fully screened in the UK, while still being regularly shown on US TV. Filming at the Marquee was carried out on the 18th, 19th and 20th October, with Bowie personally chosing the setting for the show, after first considering the possibility of a full-scale live concert (rejected by the NBC as too expensive).  This release feature the entire broadcast on CD for the first time , with, alongside Bowie and the Spiders, The Troggs, Marianne Faithful, and the today little known Carmen, a Brit/American ‘flamenco/rock’ ensemble, rarely heard of since.
