It is with great pride that Sacred Bones Records announces its official, expanded, re-release of the soundtrack to David Lynch's landmark 1977 film, Eraserhead. This limited deluxe edition of 1500 includes: a 16 page booklet, three 11"x11" prints, digital download, and a limited edition Peter Ivers 7". A-side of the single is "In Heaven" and the b-side unearths a newly discovered original Ivers recording entitled, "Pete's Boogie" taken from the original audio tapes and mixed by Lynch himself. Eraserhead rests firmly at the top of that canon of American underground culture for which there is no genre. A staple of the dark underbelly of popular cinema that was originally only viewable at arthouse screenings or on the Midnight Movie circuit, Eraserhead is a truly unadulterated offering; and much of its sensation lies beyond the purely visual realm. The stark, dusty black and white images put forth are caked with and submerged in a dense jungle of industrial hums, buzzes, screeches and screams. Eraserhead is a narrative made up of two intertwined veins: one of bleak and beautiful pictures elegantly painted in gray and black; and one of blankets of sublime, enveloping noise and static, the tinkering of Fats Waller organ rolls echoing in the background. To lay in the dark and listen to this dizzying succession of blissful noise is a different way to get "lost" in the vast space of then the visuals of the film itself. It's no stretch to consider this soundtrack an experimental, early industrial masterpiece. Eraserhead's individual passion and personal tone shines through even in the thickest moments of fierce static, an audio undertaking that took Lynch and sound designer Alan Splet years to perfect. Though Eraserhead's most famous piece of music is undoubtedly Peter Ivers' unforgettable, oft-covered haunting ballad "In Heaven", and the most exciting attribute of this edition of the soundtrack is no doubt its expansion; during the process of transferring the audio tapes, an unreleased recording from Ivers was discovered. It had not been heard since it was originally performed, over three decades ago. After working for years to expose and foster the dark, brooding sounds that exist in the current underground, nothing could make us more proud than to share with our audience this, a new look at one of our most cherished influences; the soundtrack to David Lynch's Eraserhead. Night Ark is an instrumental quartet led by Ara Dinkjian, an American of Armenian descent. The ensemble blends the sounds of the Middle East with elements of rock, pop, jazz, and classical forms of music. The group came together in 1986 after Steve Backer, a producer for RCA, heard a demo of one of Dinkjian's original compositions and promptly issued an invitation to record. After pulling together the quartet, Dinkjian and his crew recorded the albums Moments and Picture. Night Ark next inked a deal with Polygram, which put out the albums In Wonderland and Petals on Your Path. The ensemble has played to sold-out houses in the Middle East and Europe. It has appeared at the Israel Festival, the Yerevan International Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival. The group's songs utilize such traditional instruments as the saz, the zither, the oud, and the cumbus. Dinkjian is ranked among the premiere oud players in the world. He was raised on the sounds of jazz, pop, and the music of Armenia. At Connecticut's Hartt College of Music, he earned the first degree granted there in the oud while studying theory and composition. Night Ark also includes Arto Tuncboyaciyan on percussion. He was born in Turkey of Armenian descent, and has worked with such artists as Al DiMeola and Joe Zawinul. Armen Donelian, who is also of Armenian heritage and has worked with Mango Santamaria and Sonny Rollins, plays piano for the group. Rounding out the quartet is Marc Johnson, who previously worked with Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, and Bill Evans, among others. Style: Pop
