Originally born as a German-British band, the music of MESSAGE oscillates between a substantial heavy rock and psychedelic rock. "From Books And Dreams" was recorded under the direction of the famous musical engineer Dieter Dierks, who recorded many "Krautrock" Bands between '69 and '75 (Nektar, Amon Düül, Tangerine Dream, Guru Guru etc.). The result sounds very melodic, with a ravishing and an accomplished lyrical sense of composition. This album contains a remarkable show from what is sometimes referred to among the cognoscenti as Chris Hillman s 'Firefallin' Burrito Brothers' Tour. This was an early show on the tour and took place immediately following the demise of the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Hillman called up buddy and former FBB alumni Rick Roberts, who had recently formed a new band called Firefall. FF were practicing and playing together but did not yet have a record deal nor had they performed in front of an audience. So Roberts, along with his Firefall mates guitarist Jock Bartley (who had also, earlier, played with Gram Parsons), bassist Mark Andes (formerly of Spirit), and ex-Byrd/Burrito Michael Clarke, joined the temporary and hastily put together group which for the sake of simplicity were blandly dubbed the Chris Hillman Band. However, for the purposes of this gig at the famous Denver night-spot, Ebbets Field, they were referred to as Chris Hillman and Friends. This show and those that followed it across summer of 1975 became most notable, however, for being the launch-pad for Firefall. Towards the end of the 75 dates, Chris became ill and couldn't perform, so Firefall just took over the full proceedings each night, and were subsequently 'discovered and signed' by Atlantic record execs on the spot. But on the night here featured Hillman was definitely the boss, and indeed he and the team played an eclectic mix of tunes from his various eras , covering songs from the Byrds, the Burritos, Manassas, and the SHF Band. An outstanding 1971 studio concert broadcast, featuring Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, hot off the road with Eric Clapton and George Harrison, live at A&R Recording Studios in New York City - this time with friends Duane & Gregg Allman and King Curtis. The show begins acoustically (listen to D&B & Duane on Come on in My Kitchen ) then gets rowdy and electric for the second half. There s a lot of chatter too which is endlessly fascinating and while the electric set has some minor sonic issues, the historic significance of this recording is rich the 18 minute Only You Know And I Know, featuring smokin leads by King Curtis & Gregg Allman is a pure joy to behold. Speaking of historic significance, it should be remembered that both Clapton & Harrison escaped the restrictions of their respective bands to hit the road with the Bramletts, and Clapton raided D&B s Friends to form Derek & The Dominos (while the Stones snagged Bobby Keys and Jim Price who debuted on D&B s Accept No Substitute).
