Alternative rock singer-songwriter Ryan Adams has come a long way since leaving alternative country band Whiskeytown in 2000 to pursue a solo music career. The 36-year-old has since worked with popular alternative and country artists such as The Counting Crows, Beth Orton, and Norah Jones, giving him the edge that would help him join with The Cardinals in 2005. The group has now released their fifth studio album, III/IV, which, although recorded in 2006, was released this year on the record label PAX AM. The album shows off a more creative side of Adams and his band as they step away from the classic guitar and vocal combinations we would expect. III/IV is packed with upbeat alt-rock tracks with hints of country and pinches and of pop. “Breakdown Into the Resolve” starts of the double album with a strong guitar and drum melody that compliments Adams’ vocals (that have certainly matured from earlier albums). “Wasteland” comes in with a post-punk feel featuring strong raspy vocals and chorus that will bring Smashing Pumpkins to mind. A catchy guitar riff leads into Adams almost desperately singing, “It’s your wasteland/You have it/ It’s yours” repetitively for the last minute or so of the track. “Ultraviolet Light” channels definite influence from Interpol as the vocals mirror lead singer Paul Banks. The song takes you through an eerie story of confusion and loneliness and features a smooth consistent melody, making it a standout track on the record. The fast-paced “Numbers” shows us a different side Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. This harder rock track features a fast moving melody and punk profanity filled chorus which transitions into periods of a dragging 80s rock feel. III/IV shows off a reinvented and refreshed Ryan Adams & The Cardinals sound. All 27 tracks show off a newfound creativity that we haven’t seen before from the group.
