Концептуально альбом развивается вокруг лирического персонажа приговоренного к смерти в суровой пустыне. По словам исполнителей, в новой работе они хотят поднять вопрос человеческой смертности, а идейно пластинка развивается вокруг понятия времени. Сам ‘император песка’ символизирует смерть. Песок в сюжете альбома является метафорой времени, а барабанщик и вокалист группы Брэн Дэйлор сравнивает приговор персонажа с получением смертельного диагноза от врача. Альбом «Emperor Of Sand» был записан в The Quarry Recording Studio в пригороде родного города группы – Атланты. В качестве продюсера выступил Brendan O’Brien известный сотрудничеством с Pearl Jam, Нилом Янгом (Neil Young), AC/DC и Rage Against The Machine. Группа Mastodon признается одной из самых влиятельных в жанре рок музыки на сегодняшний день.
