Pow, Boom, Splash! You will instantly recognize the rich brush strokes of this musical painter. Monkeytown linchpin Moritz Friedrich, aka Siriusmo, is back with a bang and a pencil. Following up 2013's Enthusiast (MONKEY 033CD/LP), his third full-length recording Comic sounds like its title suggests: colorful, rampant, funny, and hilariously foolish. Siriusmo maintains his very own sound and spot within electronic music, drawing from numerous styles and mashing it all through his personal beat-grinder, constantly understating and exaggerating. He's the innovator that has no such intentions at all. Here's what the master himself has to say about his new work: "Comic feels like dilettante kids drawings roughly sketched with a big marker, like abstract layouts as well as finely carved romantic paintings. 14 songs ripped from the pages of a coloring book to be vividly colored by you!" But don't worry, those pages will fill themselves with life as soon as the mellow and trippy patterns of the opening track set in. There are big and broken beats in "Wrong Password", extremely easygoing rave tunes like "Dagoberta", lots of genuine oddities like "Wixn", and the piano work on "Geilomant" even makes you think of some classic hip-hop track. Comparisons are futile, except for one: From the melodic vintage electro of "Dagoberta" to the sonic assault and whirlwind drum programming of "Bleat", there's a strong link to older Squarepusher records. Just replace the former's jazz and jungle roots with Berlin's musical history, and you get an idea of what Siriusmo is made of. Siriusmo may be the laziest genius around, though he's been all but unproductive since Enthusiast: In 2015 he joined forces with Modeselektor and toured Europe under the banner of Siriusmodeselektor, playing festivals from Glastonbury to Sonar. The same year he produced the debut album of Romano, Köpenick's one-of-a-kind rap phenomenon and close friend of Moritz. He remixed Moderat, collaborated with synth pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, and contributed to Mr. Oizo's latest album (BEC 5156714, 2016), who's also appearing on Comic. So does Romano on standout track "La Bouche", delivering some tasty German phrases. Having been occupied recently with Roman's second album, his fans are very lucky that Moritz found the time to pin down a new Siriusmo album as well. He may not be a man of many words, but possesses a bold and singular musical vision. Also features Dana And Romano and Jan Driver.

The second remix single for Moderat’s album "III" continues to prove the bands impeccable taste for club music. Both KiNK and Shed deliver absolute dance floor bangers. This record will make a lot of DJs’ lives much easier but also make it painfully hard to chose which one to drop in their sets. As each remix takes on the signature synth hook of "Running". Bulgarian producer KiNK pairs it with a deep bass line and a buoyant house groove. His clever amalgamation of the leitmotif is so twisted, it´s hard to analyse at which point the original actually shifts into something else. The whole thing happens so organically, one could be tricked into thinking this was the original. His pure producer - craftsmanship yields a notoriously smooth track designed to win over 2016’s summer festivals. Untouched by any deliberate purposes for his production Shed decides to bring in the kick right at the beginning of the track, shuffling hi-hats on top of a slightly distorted pad and a brooding bass. His stomping techno embeds Moderat’s synth line in a stoic beat that won’t compromise its deadly simplicity. An absolute secret weapon for the peak time, this record will bring back Moderat to the clubs they hailed from. Big time.

Running can be a form of stress relief. It helps to clear the mind, catalyze emotions and refuel. It can even cause a rush of energy and make you high on endorphins. It is in these ways very similar to dancing. What sets both apart is the collective experience. While the former is rather seldom associated with groups, the latter almost always is. Moderat’s 2nd single "Running" has quite a unifying effect to it. It blends the isolated voice of melancholy with the collective excitement of a night at a summer festival. Their music is for the main stage: a highly emotive kind of pop, which is built to dance, but never simple. The sonic palette of “Running” spans intricate percussions, cascading, yet overtly recognisable synths, a driving kick drum and a whole lot of feel-good vibes. The rhythms are as compelling as they are deadly effective. At the same time the lyrics address feelings of impotence and powerlessness in a hyper-capitalist world, where each individual isn´t striving for anything anymore but just repeats mechanisms that are out of its power to control: "Running is about being part of a mass. A mass that constantly needs to move to function, but one that's not deciding directions by itself." (Sascha Ring) In its endeavouring balance of self esteem and subtlety, the brightness of synth pop and the moodiness of UK house, this song will recharge your batteries much like a perfect workout. Its emotional juxtaposition emits a grandeur, seen seldom in current pop music. It depicts the torn feelings of today’s youth and is another fine example of how Moderat manage to unite the two worlds of the energy and the hedonism of the club and the thoughtfulness and delicate instrumentation of leftfield pop music. If "Running" leans towards the latter, “90% Wasser” the exclusive B-side of the EP, bows deeply to the undercurrent of contemporary UK club music. In this brooding track with it´s big dubstep claps, the lyrics are reduced to a distant humming, reminding one´s self not to get lost in escapism but to immerse in the present.

Moderat are back. With "Reminder" they blend the spacious, highly emotional sounds of modern electronic music with timeless songwriting. Two powerful remixes from Special Request aka Paul Woolford and Answer Code Request take the track to very different dancefloors. Paul Woolford is one of the truly great British DJs and producers. As Bobby Peru he developed a strikingly raw, unexpectedly physical House sound. Lately he caused a stir as Special Request, taking the relentlessly thumping breakbeats of the early nineties to present dancefloors. In his "Special Request Rework" Woolford recreates the song with a highly determined, imperious bass drum, saving the vocal for an even more effective appearance in the break of the track. The looped breakbeat and precise sound splinter from the original version, giving the track unstoppable, trashing energy, making it equally indispensable for Bass Music and for House Music DJs. Berlin's Answer Code Request is one of the artists on Berghain's label Ostgut Ton. Pursuing the opposite approach from his British colleague, Answer Code Request does not develop his remix out of a groove, but from the atmosphere, the emotional realm of the track. Artfully orchestrating shreds of Apparat's voice and a series of striking hook lines and synthesizer tracks, Answer Code Request creates one of the most pronounced Techno tracks of this season.

Moderat is the alliance of Berlin's electronic heavyweights, Modeselektor and Apparat. Like very few other artists they manage to fuse rousing basslines and intense breakbeats with gripping songs and a highly individual voice. Perhaps Syria’s most successful musical export, international singer Omar Souleyman has returned with his second proper studio effort and most personal album to date, “Bahdeni Nami”, coming this July from Monkeytown Records. For the new album Omar opened his doors to collaborations with a number of renowned electronic producers, all of whom were established fans keen to offer unique interpretations of Souleyman’s established sound. Four Tet returns to produce a track, Gilles Peterson lends his considerable talents to one song, Modeselektor turn in the two fastest dance numbers of the set, and Legowelt offers a remix for the title track. Additionally Black Lips’ Cole Alexander treats one of the heart-wounding ballads to a thoroughly distinctive remix that will appear on a 7” in August. The new album was recorded closer to home, in Istanbul, and appropriately the singer is joined by traditional accompaniment. Souleyman has reunited with his favorite poet, Ahmad Alsamer (who penned his pre-west hits “Kaset Hanzel”, “Khattaba”, and “Shift –al Mani”), heard throughout the album offering claps and wails of encouragement. The songs come alive with musical contributions and support from the virtuosic saz work of Khaled Youssef, another long time collaborator from his hometown. Keyboards by Rizan Said improvise devotedly to every tune and turn of Souleyman’s choice. The lyrics are familiar territory for the singer – declarations of eternal love, consolation of one’s aching heart, please to his lover to sleep in his arms forever – realized as four fast dance numbers, an introduction mawal, and an elaborate araby style ballad. Despite world’s insistence to associate him with his home country’s unending war, Omar gives back nothing but Love.
