Uncompromising traditional metal from the rough Australian terrain! On their second studio album Mach II, Australian metal tyrants push traditional metal forward with fist-clenching manliness while remaining true to the past. Road Warrior bassist/vocalist Denimal Blake is a songwriter by trade, metalhead at heart and proud purveyor of metaphor. When discussing his manner of collecting songwriting ideas for the band's second album, Mach II, he envisioned himself as a massive, ancient dragon, perched atop a giant stockpile of precious riffs, jealously guarding each and every one, no matter how tarnished and old. Through the age-old process of riff elimination and songwriting maturation, Mach II was born, an album that brings forth "more" of everything from Road Warrior's sonic arsenal in comparison to their 2018 Power debut: More melodies, more guitar harmonies, more solos and more vocals. In fact, the word "more" was thrown about so much that Blake joked the album should have been called More II instead of Mach II. Mach II, though, is fitting since it is a more sophisticated offering than its predecessor.

Recorded in late 2019/early 2020 with producer Richard Whittaker, Consequence of Time bears the mark of a band leveraging its wide array of influences for an album that goes beyond what fans may expect from Pale Divine. While elements of the band's essential back catalog remain in place on cuts like opener "Tyrants & Pawns" and the title track, it is the free-flowing guitar melody barrage on "Satan in Starlight," the early progressive rock/metal lurch of "Broken Martyr" and the mystical wanderings of "Phantasmagoria" that immediately separates Consequence of Time from previous Pale Divine albums. Not only is there a greater emphasis guitar interplay, Ortt's vocals emerge as the perfect complement to Diener's soulful mid-range, coming to a head on the spiraling closing track, "Saints of Fire." The cover artwork for Consequence of Time was created by artist Brian Tutlo and is the perfect visual accompaniment to an album that, while not conceptual, describes the evolution of the band: Everything changes as a consequence of time. Eternal's Kelsonic Studios in Australia. The writing sessions for the self-titled were largely helmed by Miranda and Davis, with Miranda providing the riffs and Davis cementing the arrangements. While all three songs from Through Divine Rite made the jump to the self-titled album ("Trampled into the Earth," "Through Divine Rite" and "Flametongue"), the remainder of the songs were created through trial-and-error. Davis, admittedly, is a stickler for arrangements and will often create multiple versions of the same song, while Pinion added her flavor by supplying song ideas and vocal lines written on the piano. This unorthodox way of writing paid off in the end: Stygian Crown emerged with a batch of songs that each bears their own identity but are unmistakably crushing and epic. Pinion shouldered the lyric writing load, detailing myths from different cultures, namely "Devour the Dead," which is about the Egyptian goddess Ammit, while "Two Coins for the Ferryman" recalls Charon, the boatman who took the dead across the river Styx. Her vocals - one of the defining traits of Stygian Crown - work majestically between the band's boulder-sized riffs and powerful bottom-end, resonating on album opener "Up from the Depths" and "When Old Gods Die." A sterling, heaving album capable of moving heaven and earth, Stygian Crown's self-titled debut is a masterclass in songwriting and unbridled heaviness. Doomination awaits!
