"We recorded this album in the winter of 2012 at the Moritzbastei in Leipzig/Germany, where we played and recorded 3 whole concerts with a multitrack-system. On these nights we had a guest, the great Celloplayer Anne Mueller from Berlin. We never wanted it to call "Unplugged" or "Acoustic Show". I decided to call it "Reduced!". Our Soundmixer Georg Tuerk recorded every instrument plus the atmosphere of the club. Still the concept was not that of a classic Livealbum. Unlike most of the world's official Livealbums we insisted in correcting absolutely NOTHING of the performance, to keep it raw and intense. We kept all mistakes and little insecurities. On the other hand Georg spent months in the studio to go extremely into details, trying to make every single instrument in the song/mix audible. Although fans of the Voodooclub probably know every song on this album, the songs sound a bit more unusual, often more reduced to the essence of the songs, closer to what the original songwriting was about. So what is it? A live album? A studio album? It is REDUCED! Since our singer Pia will leave the band at the end of the year, this is a fine final document of her contributions to the Voodooclub." Andy Summers rose to fame in the early 1980’s as the guitarist of the multi-million record selling rock band - The Police. The Police were the number one band of the time and dominated the music scene and the media in the 80s with several number one records. Summers’ innovative guitar playing created a new paradigm for guitarists in this period and has been widely imitated ever since. Prior to the Police, Summers played with various bands in the London scene, including The Animals, Soft Machine, Kevin Coyne and Kevin Ayers. After the band’s dramatic exit from the music scene, Summers continued to develop his interest in photography as well touring, recording as a solo artist, composing for films (including 2010, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, The Wild Life and Weekend at Bernie's), writing books, and exhibiting his photography. Over the years, Summers has collaborated with many fellow musicians as well as a number of fellow-guitarists, including Robert Fripp, John Etheridge, Victor Biglione, Benjamin Verdery, Roberto Menescal , Fernanda Takai and Rodrigo Santos.. Triboluminescence: Triboluminescence is the follow up recording by Andy Summers to his 2016 release Metal Dog. In this latest release, Summers once again delves into the deep exotic textures which characterized Metal Dog saying that part of his quest is always to find fresh if not alien sounds that avoid all the standard electric guitar clichés. “We are now living in a world of a billion guitarists “he says “so the struggle to swim upstream, sound different and make original music has become more difficult, but then maybe that is a good challenge. I play for an audience of one – yours truly. Flügge [meaning “independent” or “to spread one’s wings” in German] is 44 minutes and 41 seconds long, includes 14 songs and 13 instruments divided by two musicians drawing on at least ten different musical spheres of influence. Sampling and digital post production: zero. The second album by Berlin duo Odd Couple has become an eclectic mix that doesn’t fit too easily into a category. When Tammo Dehn and Jascha Kreft were working on their debut “It's A Pressure To Meet You”, which was released two years ago, they were still at the primordial soup stage of sultry garage-rock. Flügge outgrew the age-old framework of guitar, bass and drums with a confident vehemence. The record breathes rock music, speaking the language of the Blues with riffs in widescreen and keyboards under cover of night, but nevertheless structured by the skeleton of a modern interpretation of Krautrock and the repetitive punching beat of classic hip-hop productions. The result is a sound that the German music scene has not yet heard. Flügge consistently directs its gaze inwards. Six years after their arrival in Berlin – a circus of coolness, drugs and trendy hang outs – the two kindergarten buddies from Ostfriesland still feel somewhat out of place. So, what should they do? Another satirical outcry, like their debut? No, instead they had a rummage around in their own “Gehirnkasten” (“brain boxes”), to name one of the songs on Flügge. “We made a conscious decision to be introspective,” explains Dehn. “On one hand, we can’t exclude ourselves from the criticism, but on the other hand something had developed in us over the years that we just had to get out”. Initially this included the typical ingredients of pop: love, pain, anxiety, overwork and instability. But the duo managed to do this without losing sight of their humorous, albeit caustic, take on their own contradictions – and, consequently, those of a whole generation. “Our age group is living out the self-discovery only dreamed about by our parents which, ironically, has been made possible by a lifestyle that people reject today – a normal job and a savings account” says Dehn. “We wanted to examine this position.” This is particularly evident in the title song “Flügge” in which Odd Couple describe a trip to California – “Es war schön, Mami!”(“It was really good, Mommy!”) – which led to their supposed enlightenment about life: “Ich glaub’, ich hab’s verstanden” (“I think I understood it”). The problem is that it takes more than just going on a journey by yourself or joining a yoga class for beginners to formulate a theory of everything. It is more a case of life throwing you a never-ending cycle of challenges that constantly change and in the end most people are none the wiser for it. Why is that? “Let's go online so you can choose out of it,” suggest Odd Couple on the album’s moody highlight “Très Mello”, declaring, “Too many options make me feel like I'm lost.” We want to have our cake and eat it too. City and tranquillity. Nature and infrastructure. Forest and electricity. Preferably with Wi-Fi. The fact that this social criticism works so well musically is based on the band’s own self-observations. “Flügge feels like our first real album,” says Kreft. “This is us, here and now.” It’s easy to see why. Before its release in 2014, their self-produced debut album was left to stew for exactly two years and three months on their home computer’s hard drive. For “Flügge” however, it was the other way around. The album was recorded in full within just a few weeks, mixed by Dehn himself and mastered by Kai Blankenberg. “It was refreshing,” says Dehn. “Some songs only materialized once we’d started the sessions.” This meant that technical crutches were largely prohibited. Despite its sonic diversity, all of Flügge was performed; nothing was sampled. “We wanted to take on the challenge of producing a modern sound using analog resources” the duo explained, “Basically, we want to be anything but a retro band.” With Flügge, Odd Couple have certainly made the grade. Although the record helps itself to parts from the rock warehouse, it doesn’t simply rebuild what has gone before. Songs like “Orbit Traveller” or “Serve” are daydreams in song format, “Am I Evil” features riffs and distortion pedal in just the right places and “Go Sees” with its falsetto chorus is a little masterpiece. References or comparisons would be out of place at this point. Flügge stands on its own. Odd Couple belong to a time when rock music is almost desperately seeking its own identity – a positive anachronism. Their version of rock can sure tell us a thing or two... and it’s fun! It's been 20 years! Yes, PELZIG have been around since 1995. Why this isn't part of general knowledge might be owing to the fact that PELZIG have often been misunderstood to be a side project of SLUT- which, facing the staff intersections, perhaps couldn't be avoided. Yet, the band has always self-sufficiently chosen its own path. The return of PELZIG after 11 years! Up to now four albums have been released which partly were recorded and mixed at Uphon Studio in Weilheim in Germany. In 2004 their last album ,Safe In Its Place" was released - it probably captured the sound and the energy of the band from Munich and Ingolstadt better than any release before. That was eleven years ago. It feels like an eternity. Eleven years in which the band faced good and bad news, on a personal as well as on a musical level. Meanwhile in the real world, the entire musical landscape was turned upside down. Things changed. Unperturbed, the band around vocalist Christian Schulmeyr continued working on their material, always in the safe knowledge that one day the time would come to release a new album. Even though now they had to start from scratch. Which doesn't matter to PELZIG, just like anything else. The band never intended to be the next big thing. From an endless amount of ideas a core of ten songs emerged which PELZIG will release under the title ,Medium Cool World". The album is a distillate from over a decade of various musical influences, changing living environments, strokes of luck and experiences of failure. Not everything is always cool. But also not quite uncool. Rather somehow in-between. Guitarist Rainer Schaller - who by the way is a producer at the German radio station BR Zündfunk - took over production duties. Oli Zülch, known for his work with NOTWIST, MS JOHN SODA, SLUT, DIE ÄRZTE and SPORTFREUNDE STILLER mixed the album and gave it the final punch. Or maybe not. We will see.
