LIVE FROM THE ATLANTIC STUDIOS” was a short lived, promo only series of in concert albums, recorded live before a small, invited audience. In fact, this series of now highly collectable releases, produced to be played just on the radio, only lasted three albums;
by AC/DC, The Le Blanc & Carr Band, and short lived Swan Song hard rockers, Detective. • Fronted by Michael Des Barres, Detective featured Michael Monarch on guitars, Tony Kaye on keyboards, Bobby Pickett on bass and Jon Hyde on drums. No slouches, after signing to Led Zeppelin’s own imprint, Swan Song, they released both of their only two LPs in 1977. • Des Barres had previously cut his teeth with Deep Purple protégés Silverhead, a London based band that recorded two LP for Purple Records in 1972 and 1973. Where Silverhead could be seen as the bridge between early 70s glam rock and 80s style hair metal, Detective were firmly based in the gutters of LA and the clubs of Sunset Strip. • Where Detective really shone was on stage, and this is self-evident on “Live From The Atlantic Studios”, even before a very small, invited audience, a world away from the enormodomes that the band had been playing in support of their first two LPs as guests of the likes of KISS. • Although the Swan Song Icarus logo appears proudly on the cover, the LP demonstrates the growing interest parent label Atlantic had in developing the band, even going so far as to bring famed producer Tom Dowd on board to produce the proposed third album. • “Live From The Atlantic Studios” remains a fitting testament to the short-lived band. Originally issued in 1978, but never officially made available commercially, this is the very first time this album has been legitimately released on CD.

Mick Softley’s 1972 album released for the first time on CD. • Born in 1941 in South Woodford, Essex, Mick Softley was at the forefront of the folk revival scene of the early 1960s. • Mick helped Donovan with guitar-picking styles when they were both involved with the folk club in The Cock pub in St Albans. Later, Donovan would record two of Mick’s songs ‘The War Drags On’ and ‘Goldwatch Blues’. • Recorded at The Manor in Oxfordshire and at Sound Techniques, Chelsea, musicians included Jerry Donahue (Fotheringay / Fairport Convention), Gerry Conway (Fotheringay), Pat Donaldson (Fotheringay), Barry de Souza (Curved Air) and Lyn Dobson (Manfred Mann / Soft Machine). • Produced by Tony Cox, talented keyboard player who played with Sandy Denny and Mike Heron. • “Disc and Music Echo” magazine probably captured the essence of this unique recording most succinctly when they reviewed the album and stated that “listening to it, one almost feels an intruder into the man’s soul”. • Includes a comprehensive liner note.

Whenever there’s talk about country music – the genuine, hard-core variety, that is – it’s pretty inevitable that Gene Watson’s name will soon come into the conversation, his being synonymous with pure country music. • Gene Watson is a godsend to all country music fans who like their music true and honest, and that’s the way it’s always been for this entertainer over the course of five decades, ever since his name first appeared in the Country Music charts some 50 hits ago. • Born Gary Rene Watson in Palestine, Texas in 1943 but raised in Paris, Texas within a musical family where his father and brother both played guitar. He also learned the instrument and first sang performing professionally in local clubs as a thirteen year old. He soon picked up a reputation as one of the area’s finest singers with his strong tenor vocals and slight nasal tone making him a very popular attraction at Houston’s honky-tonk night spots including The Dynasty where he was resident for several years. • With songs that run the gamut of emotions, and a voice that convinces he lived them “Back In The Fire” (1989) produced four chart singles ‘Don’t Waste It On The Blues’, ‘Back In The Fire’, ‘The Jukebox Played Along’ and ‘The Great Divide’. Two more hits came with “At Last” (1991), the first being the title track and the second ‘You Can’t Take It With You When You Go’. • With around 50 country chart hits, Gene was voted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002 and was one of the first inductees into Houston’s Music Hall of Fame in 2013

The unique and inimitable Michael Des Barres made his first foray into the world of rock ‘n’ roll fronting the glammed-up, London proto-rock/metal, scuzz punks Silverhead. Recording two LPs for Deep Purple’s own label, Purple Records from 1972 until the band imploded in 1974, Des Barres made brief stab at a solo career, before catching the attention of Led Zeppelin’s own label imprint, Swan Song. Joined by Michael Monarch on guitars, Tony Kaye on keyboards, Bobby Pickett on bass and Jon Hyde on drums, Detective were born. • Fuelled by the phenomenal success of Led Zeppelin, Swan Song didn’t appear to be in a rush to hear the fruits of Des Barres’s labours with his new band, who spent a year making their self-titled debut. Evidently taking some inspiration from their new patrons, their first LP carried a dark swagger, with enough punch to make some quarters at least want to believe it was in fact a Zep record in a secret guise. • Having previously been happy to let the band sit on their debut for a year until its 1977 release, their label suddenly wanted a follow-up, and quick. Possibly in an act of too much too soon, “It Takes One To Know One” was released before the end of 1977, a mere six months after their debut. Picking up where the first LP left off, it in fact made a better placing on the US charts, no doubt helped by a heavy touring schedule with the likes of KISS. • Detective even made a brief foray into the mainstream, appearing on popular US TV show, WKRP In Cincinnati as “Scum Of The Earth”, as a sort of US vision of a punk rock group. A move from Swan Song to parent label Atlantic, with Tom Dowd lined-up to produce their third record, sadly came to nothing, and the band subsequently split. • This new version of “It Takes One To Know One” features liner notes based on interviews by Malcolm Dome with Michael Des Barres, recording engineer Richard Digby-Smith and guitarist Michael Monarch. Long out of print, this is the first time it has been made available on CD outside of Japan and the U.S. and Germany

The two albums twinned in this collection might cause slight confusion by their titles. Why have a “Biggest Hits” in 1985 when a “Greatest Hits” came out three years earlier? But the releases, with different recordings, simply prove the immense success of this singer as she quickly piled one hit upon another. • Born 26th March 1956 native Tennessean Charlotte Denise McClain’s country music preferences blended in well with the rock, jazz and blues sounds that surrounded her as she grew up in Memphis, a city that’s a real melting pot of music. • She sang in her brother’s band, known as Charlotte and the Volunteers, had regular appearances on the local country music show “Mid-South Jamboree” and toured with artists such as O.B. McClinton. This led onto a deal with Epic Records in 1976 with “Charlotte” being dropped for the more catchy “Charly”. • A 39 hit recording career that spanned 13 years saw her distinctive vocals surpass many others emerging on the scene. With her natural beauty and sophistication giving rise to offers of modelling sessions from “Playboy” and “Penthouse” magazines (both turned down) television was to greatly benefit from her presence when videos became part of the country music norm. • Although Charly continued as a chart artist until the end of the 1980s she virtually retired from the music scene by the early 1990s when she chose to devote time to domestic life in South Western Tennessee.

Hipsway were a Scottish pop band who enjoyed international success with their hit single ‘The Honeythief’. The band was formed in Glasgow in 1984 by ex-Altered Images guitarist Johnny McElhone on bass, with front man Grahame Skinner (vocals), Pim Jones (guitar) and Harry Travers (drums). Their music was characterized by Skinner’s deep voice and Jones’ guitar playing. • They were signed by Mercury/Phonogram and released their debut single ‘The Broken Years’ in June 1985, which peaked at #72. ‘Ask The Lord’ followed in August and also peaked at #72. It took the release of ‘The Honeythief’ in February 1986 to break the band on a national level, when the single made #17 and became one of the most memorable hits of the era. • Their debut album HIPSWAY (Produced by Paul Staveley O’Duffy and Gary Langan) followed in April and peaked at #42, but stayed on the album chart for an impressive 23 weeks, last appearing there in June 1987. The album track, ‘Tinder’, became well known in Scotland as the soundtrack to a McEwan’s Lager TV commercial. Its constant exposure helped keep the album a strong seller in their home country. • A new version of ‘Ask The Lord’ was issued and made #50, and the album’s final single ‘Long White Car’ reached #55. Some months later, ‘The Honeythief’ began its ascent of the US Hot 100, peaking at #19, sending the album to #55. ‘The Honeythief’ also charted in Ireland, The Netherlands, Italy, Canada and New Zealand. • Hot Shot Records is proud to present the first ever 2CD deluxe edition of HIPSWAY, newly remastered with sixteen bonus tracks and presented in a super-jewel case complete with liner notes written by Grahame Skinner, who co-produced the reissue. So said the publicity at the time of its release, this despite these four girls being, Every mothers nightmare, every school boys dream, according to Spin magazine. Spin also reckoned they were, The coolest band in America, whereas Kerrang! magazine recognized their Grimy, glorious rock ‘n roll… dripping star power and packing irresistible pop-rock. Vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Allison Robertson, bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano formed The Donnas in May 1993, adopting the respective stage names Donna A, Donna R, Donna F and Donna C, putting out their first, independently released album in 1997. Taking inspiration from the punky pop rock of the Ramones and The Runaways, mixed with the classic rock of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and KISS, by 2002, they had come to the attention of Atlantic Records, who proclaimed, The Donnas spit out idiosyncratic pop-punk anthems of rock ‘n roll fantasy and teenage kicks with plenty of goofy putdowns and tough-attitude posturing, largely fuelled by their life on the road. And if you were in any doubt, they were, Inspired by AC/DC, the Sex Pistols and Madonna, Donna As lipstick-snarl vocals pummel Donna Cs and Donna Fs furious chug and Donna Rs early Guns ‘n Roses guitar wall. 2002s Spend The Night, the first of two albums released by Atlantic, saw the band appear on mainstream US TV shows, such as David Letterman and Jay Leno, whilst taking a mainstage slot on 2004s Lollapalooza tour. Brandishing what Time Out called, Witty hard rock and punk garage pop from these fab California femmes, lead to appearances on a number of film soundtracks (including Dodgeball, Mean Girls, Elektra and Herbie Fully Loaded), as well as a number of computer games, for which they appeared tailor made, as The Independent hailed them as a, hard-rocking fast-living all-girl quartet who pump out Ramones-style pop-punk with a nice degree of humour. If that wasnt enough, they also sound-tracked Budweiser, Levis and Rolling Stone advertising campaigns too. In 1975, the group enjoyed its first breakthrough hit with ‘It Only Takes A Minute;
in 1976, the timeless classic ‘Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel became the teams first global smash followed by ‘Dont Take Away The Music also became an international dance music/pop and R&B chartmaker. In 1977, the Bee Gees-penned ‘More Than A Woman (from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) catapulted Tavares back into the worldwide charts as did ‘Whodunit. Remastered by Donald Cleveland, this 2016 release follows the labels reissue of seven Capitol albums by the group – Love Storm (SMCR-5127), Hard Core Poetry (SMCR-5097), Love Uprising (SMCR-5065), Madam Butterly (SMCR-5064), Supercharged (SMCR–5045), Sky-High! (SMCR-5023) and In The City (SMCR-5022). Stellar notes by renowned U.S. writer Kevin Goins include quotes from members of the group.

As it’s been said many times, by many people, Marty Robbins was a truly original stage entertainer and a recording artist without music barriers, although country was his natural forte. The two vintage albums in this collection clearly proved his country status and why he was – and remains, in the view of numerous fans worldwide – one of this music’s finest. • “R.F.D.” and “My Kind Of Country” released in 1964 and 1967 respectively well complemented each other and clearly showed the singer’s return to that decade’s root country sound. Neither contained any classics or covers, but that hardly detracts from the quality of songs, with spare instrumental accompaniment further highlighting the vocals. Several of the songs were penned by band members and Marty only contributed one original to each album. There were no chart singles, though the albums themselves enjoyed high chart places (“R.F.D.” halted at #4 and “My Kind Of Country” at #9) and many fans regard both as among Marty Robbins’ finest work. Incidentally, R.F.D. refers to the U.S. postal service, Rural Free Delivery. • Although country music changed over the years Marty Robbins hardly ever disappeared from the charts, undoubtedly because of his skill to defy trends. It was for such music, along with many other career achievements, that he earned country music’s top honour – a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982, the induction coming just a few weeks before his death on 8th December. The world lost an irreplaceable talent at the tragically early age of 57. • Both albums appear on CD for the first time

Jim Ed Brown was part of the brother-and-sister trio The Browns who clocked up twenty country hits between 1955 and 1967. • The first ten tracks on this collection feature some of Jim Ed’s solo hit records from 1967 to 1973 which include three Top 10 hits ‘Pop A Top’, ‘Morning’ and ‘Southern Loving’. • A further development in Jim Ed Brown’s career came in 1976 when he teamed with Helen Cornelius. By the time The Intruders had released their highly acclaimed album “Save The Children” in 1973, they were already established as one of the leading R&B groups of their era. Having amassed 20 hit R&B singles and three albums the classic line up of Sam “Little Sonny” Brown, Eugene “Bird” Daughtry, Robert “Big Sonny” Edwards and Phil Terry came back together to record their 4th of 5 albums for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff’s associated enterprises. Widely cited by fans and critics alike as the group’s finest work “Save The Children” is regarded as one of the quintessential examples of Gamble and Huff’s ‘Philly Sound.’ • The title track, a re-working of the Gil Scott-Heron song, sees The Intruders create a more sophisticated sound than on the original, over which Brown sings the socially conscious lyrics. Paul Simon’s ‘Mother And Child Reunion’ is a given the Philly treatment, far removed from the original’s reggae vibe. Single ‘I Wanna Know Your Name’ is a trademark Gamble/Huff ballad, as is ‘Memories Are Here To Stay’, both featuring a controlled performance from Brown with the group adding strong harmonies, and ‘To Be Happy Is The Real Thing’, a mid-tempo feel good slice of Philly soul boasts stunning orchestration. • Arguably the strongest track in the set is the up-beat and super sweet extended proto-disco work-out ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’ (R&B #6/Pop #36/UK #32) which gave the group one of their biggest hits, later inspiring Tom Moulton to create a nine minute version, added as one of four bonus tracks. Another bonus track is 1972 single ‘(Win, Place or Show) She’s A Winner’ which became a UK hit in ’74 on the heels of ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’. The group re-visit their Doo-Wop roots with a cover of ‘Teardrops’ before this excellent and underrated set of classic Philly soul concludes with ‘Hang On In There’, rounding things off with more tight harmonies and a positive message. • Big Break Records is proud to present “Save The Children”, adding to the list of classic PIR titles released by the label. The two albums in this collection, “Ladies’ Choice” (1984) and “My Very Special Guests” (1979), both provide a variety of guests in the company of the Possum, as this artist was affectionately named. • One of the original intentions of “Ladies’ Choice” was to pair George Jones with, mainly, several up and coming female singers although ironically, its biggest success came with its only solo track ‘She’s My Rock’ which rose to #2 in the 1984 Billboard Single Charts. George recorded it as a tribute to his wife Nancy who had helped him turn his life around, putting behind him the years of alcoholism and drug addiction. • George Jones helped set a trend for album duet collaborations with “My Very Special Guests” bringing together a collection of artists who were admirers and peers. Perhaps the presence of Elvis Costello might have been a little surprising but he was a long-time fan and found inspiration from Jones for his country songwriting, ‘Stranger In The House’ being one of those songs. A year later he enjoyed British chart success with the George Jones hit ‘A Good Year For The Roses’. • First time CD release for “Ladies’ Choice”. • Both albums produced by Billy Sherrill.
