What does the neverland promise? Not much when you look at the cover of "Promises Of No Man's Land", showing a naked, androgynous young man with a flower wreath perched on a bear skin. Musically it looks quite different: the fourth album of the Dutchman Johannes Sigmond aka Blaudzun does not take long to enchant any listener who has a weakness for sensitive yet still thrilling indie folk with dramatic dimensions. Sigmund, for instance, started out as his minimalist Belgian neighbors, Isbells, but he raised the sound to some extent so dizzying heights that one spontaneously wanted to embrace anyone or something. And indeed, according to the title of the title, which completely fulfills the promise of the opener "Euphoria" - with a bombastic arrangement of acoustic as well as electric guitars, piano, strings ensemble, harmonium and other great things. Sigmond sighs and jubilates with the lavish instrumentarium around the bet like Scott Matthew in his longing moments - to be called the magnificent "Hollow People", which himself probably so much to the heart grown, that immediately follows a two-minute recapitulation. 180g. On October 7th, Blaudzun released the first of his three-part album cycle Jupiter: Jupiter Part I. According to Rolling Stone Germany, Part I was “...a genuinely powerful musical statement.” Blaudzun has now announced the second installment. Jupiter Part II contains brisk new songs exemplar to Blaudzun’s knack for stunning arrangements and large-scale sonic inquiry. This time, sounds testimonial to the German kraut rock movement, 80s Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and contemporary indie pop have shaped the Dutch songwriter’s (real name Johannes Sigmond) unique songwriting acumen. Jupiter II is slated for release on March 3rd. Over the breadth of nine tracks, Blaudzun’s unmistakably rich timbre and shrewd pop melodies permeate more than ever. If there’s one consistent thing throughout Blaudzun’s prolific career, it’s is his devout work ethic: whether he’s occupying himself with touring, writing or media-appearances, his art is always spearheaded by strong self-determination. Making an album comprised of three different parts deviates from the traditional game plan. This fresh approach dovetails with new creative challenges as well. “I started writing songs for Jupiter Part II almost immediately after the last shows supporting Part I. It’s been very stimulating, especially the pace in which I’m producing a record. There’s always a sense of risk involved, and I really enjoy that. Think of it as a fresh bottle of wine: the grapes that have been picked are immediately processed, with no time to ripe properly. At the moment, that’s exactly how I’m approaching my songs. The transition between fledging ideas and finished compositions happens relatively quick.” Tear GunOne of the cuts on Part II, ‘Tear Gun’, is an exception to this rule. Blaudzun came up with the basic idea of the track more than seven years ago. “Prior to the sessions for Seadrift Soundmachine, Heavy Flowers and Promises of No Man's Land, I kept fiddling with ‘Tear Gun’. In a way, the song served as a launchpad for all the work I’ve done on my previous albums. But I was never quite pleased with it, and I never got around to actually finishing it. However, the concept and overall vibe of ‘Tear Gun’ inspired me to write a lot of other stuff. I reckon there are about sixty versions of ‘Tear Gun’ in total. This time, nevertheless, I kind of felt obligated to include the track on Jupiter II. Perhaps the time was simply right, or perhaps I had to warm up to the song myself, maybe that’s the case.” One of the more remarkable features of Jupiter II are the piercing drums and especially the baritone sax, giving Blaudzun’s commanding live performances a vivid sense of romanticism and mystique. Deft analogue synths are featured more pervasively within the overall production, without upending the sheer gravitas of Blaudzun’s creative vernacular. “Melody and drums are the ones in charge. The inflections of the bass and drums shift and alternate repeatedly, a bit like an ebb and flow-effect. Since the latest album release almost five years ago, the band have been touring around the world and battling a lawsuit against the state at the same time – a somewhat Kafka-esque experience that ended up with two trials and a verdict proving the band innocent almost two years later. Immanu El re-grouped in a cellar of an old regiment building, started to write new music and got Swedish Grammy nominated producer Johan Eckeborn (Jonathan Johansson – Lebensraum) on board to work with the band. When spring arrived, the boys booked a studio at the top of a hill near Florence in Tuscany, Italy, and spent two weeks recording what now has become the band’s fourth album; Hibernation. Putting more time and focus into the production than ever before, Immanu El and Johan Eckeborn have managed to create something unique, developing the sound of the band and making the songs more compelling and exciting than ever. "When writing the song Voices I recalled a story a good friend of mine told me once" says the band’s founder and creative driving force Claes Straengberg, "he had this dream every night, over and over again where angels came to him and sang for him all night long. He was so puzzled because of that dream that he couldn't concentrate anymore on his studies during daytime, and so he had no other choice than to tell the angels one night that they should leave him alone. He never had that dream again. Not sure if he was just inventing this story, but it somehow impressed me”. Immanu El started as a musical experiment in Jönköping, Sweden 2004 by then 16-year-old Claes Strängberg, soon joined by his twin brother Per and friends David Lillberg and Jonatan Josefsson. The band has gained a reputation as one of the most promising bands from Scandinavia and have performed over 300 shows in 30 countries since the debut album was released 2008. Scott lent his extraordinary voice to the song “Terrible Dawn”, which paved the way to his participation on some live shows in Portugal and Spain and further studio work. Rodrigo has always been an avid collaborator, having worked with such diverse voices as Beth Gibbons (Portishead) or Brazilian singer Adriana Calcanhoto, among so many others. But “Terrible Dawn”, first, and “Incomplete”, afterwards, proved there was a special chemistry between the two. A Portuguese composer with his eyes set on the world, an Australian singer living in New York. Worlds apart, yet so close. An inventor of magical melodies and a self described “quiet noise maker”. Impossible to resist such an exotic pairing. Scott and Rodrigo have quietly and discretely been working together. Both have very busy schedules, Rodrigo having been deeply involved in film scores, including such boxoffice smashes as The Butler or La Cage Dorée. Scott is busy building a strong solo discography of five albums, contributed several songs for soundtracks of such successful films as John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus or guesting alongside Sia. But quietly both have been trading melodies and words, sending each other ideas that shall result in a collaborative album in 2016: Rodrigo handling the composition and production and Scott taking care of the lyrics, melody and vocals. After releasing the debut ep ”Curtains” on a 500-dollar budget in 2014 Vita Bergen has snowballed into one of the most talked about bands in Sweden: they’ve topped the ITunes charts, played sold out venues in Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia and are being played on national television in the US. They’ve received several awards in Sweden and is by many believed to be the next big thing on the European indie scene. The singer William Hellström is described as a cult leader on speed and co-founder Robert Jallinder as one of Scandinavia’s most eccentric guitarists. Their uncontrolled, often chaotic live shows have left the band with concussions, nails up their feet and torn apart fingers – and still they say they make pop music. Influenced by acts like MGMT, Pink Floyd, The Jesus & Mary Chain or The Brian Jonestown Massacre the band has made it to ”one of Sweden’s underground success stories” (Clash Magazine). After several heavyweights in the music business, such as NME, Vice, The Line of Best Fit and Clash Magazine have praised the band, now the time has come for their debut full-length album. Vita Bergen will release ”Disconnection” with Glitterhouse Records on the 3rd of March 2016 and will tour this May with gigs all around Europe. 180g. Joe Volk is a solo artist from Bristol, England now based in Bern, Switzerland. He was one of the first musicians signed to Invada records, headed by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Joe Volk got widely known for being the original singer and lyricist in Crippled Black Phoenix, and was signed to Domino Publishing with Justin Greaves as sole songwriters of the band. After six studio albums, one live album and several EP's, Volk left the group in 2013 to focus his energy on his solo material. Volk is also a composer, having written scores for independent European and British short films. He has had his material used by the BBC, HBO and had commissions from National Geographic. Volk contributed music to the Academy Award nominated documentary on Bristol street artist Banksy, entitled "Exit Through The Gift Shop". In February 2016 Volk's new solo LP 'Happenings and Killings' will be released on Glitterhouse Records. Before christmas this year, an exclusive video by award winning visual artist Craig Murray (Mogwai, Converge) will be released for the first single “Soliloquy”. Volk will be touring the UK and Europe with a new live band in the spring of 2016. On the new album, Volk worked closely with the Emmy nominated composer Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (the songwriting partnership behind the soundtrack to Alex Garland's 2015 film 'Ex Machina'), with both being credited as additional producers along with Volk. The album was mixed by Joe Volk and Jim Barr (Portishead / Get The Blessing), as well as the musician and artist Leafcutter John. The album features the three producers, along with Jim Barr, Billy Fuller (Robert Plant, BEAK>), Adrian Utley (Portishead), Mark Ophidian (US / Animals With Machinery), Guy Metcalfe (Thought Forms), Leafcutter John, Luke Harney (Typesun) and a collection of other musicians, all active in the Bristol music scene. The spectrum of the album is broad, ranging from low-fi acoustic pieces featuring subtle analogue electronics from Ophidian and instrumentation from Salisbury, to more realised tracks, layered with Volks harmonies and intricate guitar work with backing from Fuller and Barrow, who constitute the rhythm section of the band Beak>. There is “Yellow Sneak”, a track featuring a full orchestral score by Ben Salisbury, played by the Bristol Ensemble Orchestra, with a haunting accompaniment by Volk on acoustic guitar and voice, and then, again in contrast, there are tracks like “Soliloquy” or “Is Pyramid” for example, with programmed drums, bass, warm analogue synths, electric guitars, samples and electronics, with Volk pushing his voice to new extremes for his solo work. This is an album with a broad scope of sounds, styles and influences, yet it manages to translate into a cohesive body of work.
