After her much lauded debut "Playin' Me" last year, COOLY G returns with an EP that switches from songwriting mode to create extended, spaced out and rhythmic house tracks built for the dancefloor. "Hold Me" starts with minor note stabs and COOLY G's vocal refrain "Hold me" over a punchy bassline. The rhythm slowly builds as the vocal becomes more dubbed out and the atmosphere more smokey. "Oi Dirty", made with DVA, is a piece of wonky, rhythmically lopsided house with a cavernous elasticized bassline and lots of micro detail destabilising the track then bringing it back, pitching drums and mini breakdowns. "Molly" is a slow burning 4/4 house track built around a static grid that gradually builds up, getting stiffer and more intense, with wobbly acid-like synth lines and hissing static stabs, underpinned by a one note bass kick. It's a masterclass in creating tension with sleight of hand production moves.

DVA comes with a four tracker, including a DJ Rashad remix, which works really expressively within a tight format of stabbing melodies and swirling psychedelic atmosphere. The EP starts with the very broken beat of "Mad Hatter" its chewed up snares slung around a driving kick and frantic off beat tones that disappear down wormholes of fx before popping up again. "Gang Gang Riddim" is deconstructed dancehall, taking driving claps that wouldn't feel out of place in a Lenky track and wrapping nervous stabs and a sliding funky worm-like melody through them, with the occasional rasta sample dropping into the mix. "Chilli Burrito" starts off being all about pounding moody kicks and hypnotic, brassy stabs, but wait until the dialogue of a new MDMA user starts and the music becomes a witty, sardonic accompaniment to the girl's drug fuelled mood swings. Finally, DJ Rashad remixes the now classic "Walk It Out". It starts super minimal and pounding, just the vocal, a bass tone, and drums, chopped and looped, before the track opens out onto a lush funk break, giving it a whole new energy. The special extended CD version also includes the best tracks from last years highly acclaimed "Fly Juice" EP, which contrast well with the new material as colourful chunky techno that switches up every 8 bars, like grime, with plenty of shuffle and offbeat to counter the 4/4 drums. "Fly Juice" opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns, dropping in the Rhodes as a sweetener. "Do It" runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. "Walk It Out"'s repetition of the titular hookline over a 4/4 two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. In "Rumours", the voice of Hype Williams' Inga Copeland is swirled around the mix, as the track breaks down into a wonky jump up melody. As an extra bonus, two more tracks are exclusive to the CD - DJ Rashad's footworked version of "Fly Juice", and French Fries' instrumental mix of "Ganja" which breaks the original down into a twinkling digi dub

IKONIKA has always been a maverick talent and her music has always been fun - aside from a reputation for being one of the best DJs in the business, the prescient electronics of her 2010 debut "Contact, Want, Love, Have" were something of a prequel to what people started to call Post-Dubstep. Her citric synths, brash tone clashes and cluttered video game-inspired genre mangles came to her naturally, before legions of young producers got in on the act. For the new album "Aerotropolis" the 0s is still a big touchstone, but the angle is very different, the feeling is a confident brashness that takes on older genres, brushes them off, and gives them a colorful shakedown. The album opens with the gentle post-drone of "Mise En Place" before breaking into IKONIKA's first track to feature vocals, "Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)" featuring Jessy Lanza, whose joyous lyrics set the tone for the rest of the album. "Mr Cake", up next, is a bold electro-pop track with a gentle bounce. IKONIKA talks about "letting the sound take flight", and the positively soaring melodies of "Eternal Mode" attest to that, roaring out over chiming Italo-Disco style arpeggios. "Completion" is about spacious ambience before "Manchego" breaks out into playful stop-start jacking house with a fat bass line. "Let A Smile Be (Y)our Umbrella" is a mix of warm tightly-balanced chords and minimal finger snaps. "Mega Church"'s mood is reflected in its title;
playing out on huge, reverbed claps and an ocean of rippling organ. "Cryo" is a dark flight with ominous chords and thunderclap snares, while "You Won't Find It Here" is a combination of cold bleeps and happy synths stabs. The album ends with "Zen Sizzle", a solemn and contained track, but with a goofy melody running through. These songs positively glisten and sparkle. This is an album with a big heart and a lot of confidence, creativity and joyful direction.

"Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)" is the perfect snapshot of Ikonika's new album "Aerotropolis". It's also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of Jessy Lanza. "Beach Mode" combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the 80s, with Jessy's vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths.. SAM WALTON is a 22 year old producer from Manchester who came to Hyperdub after feeding them demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the "Walton EP", the first of three EPs for the label. Since then he's honed and developed his music into "Beyond", finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesn't seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and Detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions. WALTON's music is never sombre or angry, but is about subtle combinations;
there is an appealing, soulful sensuality to his beautifully crafted and joyous music. He says of the album "I just wanted there to be a contrast between bright and dark, I didn't want to stick to a specific genre either. Just a vibe." WALTON's young enough to hear older elements of dance music with fresh ears - a recent Hacienda reunion was an ear opener, hearing the stripped back power of acid house for the first time influenced some of the music on "Beyond", in the way that a handful of contrasting elements can be placed together to create an exciting whole. Tracks like "Need To Feel" find this idea in action, this catholic but balanced take on production working in effect, with funky basslines, garage woodblocks and ambient atmospherics. On "Can't You See", grimey kicks and claps are pitched against swooning, trancey strings, and "Every Night"'s tough grimey synth horns work in tune with echoed guitar licks and pumping kicks. Or check the way the clanking metallic drums and 3D atmosphere of "You And Me" contrast with warped diva giggles. By contrast, a tune like "Memories" will wrongfoot you with a long, detailed intro before breaking into a track that cuts between old school grime and bitter sweet house stabs, as will "Grit"'s whipping snares, strange rotating bleeps and snaking bassline. "Frisbee" again works with a grime pallette, a sparse, inventive soundscape of huge car door slams, weird squeaks and crackles, and a four note melody, while "City Of God"'s reverb laden, depressed beatlessness evokes a feel somewhere between grime and dubstep. Alternately recalling familiar dance music but created with freshness and enthusiasm, WALTON's vision is a welcome and highly enjoyable mutation.

Walton returns with a strictly-limited EP to precede the release of his debut album 'Beyond'. This is a vinyl-only, once it's gone it's gone kind of release, just 300 copies available. Baby is a brilliant and extreme mutation based around an R&B accapella, one that seems energised by R&B's avant-garde but danceable late 90s period. A hiccuping giggle over stuttering rusty engine stabs, and a so-stiff-it's-funky kick and and snare combination, make this a track that works brilliantly on the dance floor by sheer force of ideas and wildness. 'Can't You See's' widescreen ambience is held together by epic swelling chords, punctuated with rolling 8-bit spirals, trap-like bass, and snares. Following on from her much-lauded debut album "Quarantine" on Hyperdub released earlier in the year, Laurel Halo concludes both the year and the drama explored in "Quarantine" with this new single "Sunlight On The Faded". Where "Quarantine" was dense and beatless, layered and visceral with vocals cutting through intense soundscapes, "Sunlight On The Faded" is energized and geometric, with lush chords built around hard, sparse drums and Laurel's harmonized vocals. The claustrophobic motifs explored on "Quarantine" remain, but here they are turned inside out, incandescent and fleeting. Choked samples and illusory FX support the vocal phrases, the lyrics hinting at a resolution from the pain of the album's themes, and a hopefulness too. The b-side dub is a deep exploration, again reflecting the soundscapes of "Quarantine" but ramping up the intensity with simultaneously tense and lithe drum patterns. The chords of the original are broken by gaseous blooms, distortion detail work and rhythmic FX, allowing them to breathe and bounce in and out of the track, pivoting around a sinister, bassy dub techno pulse. Like the original take, the dub version is equal parts dark and positive, both ideal for late nights and early mornings.

After last years Hyperdub debut with the popular "Set The Tone" EP, Ossie's been busy building a name for himself, as a DJ and a producer with both Ossie and Black Orange Juice releases. He comes back to Hyperdub here with the "Ignore EP", sporting two catchy, housey, broken beat bombs.
