How else can one dream or contemplate what might have been? Opener "CF Bundy" has a woozy charm . Evenly paced and alive with the strumming of acoustic guitars, it sets the mood for what is to come. Evoking the regrets and indiscretions of a bygone age, one grown sick and enfeebled by fantasies, "Trying to Explain" , "The Guilty Party" and "What's Wrong" would all seem to be taking place in a world teetering on the edge of some great fall or cataclysm. "What The Fuck Am I doing On This Battlefield?" and "A Waste of Blood " are both moments of rude awakering. As a coda and extended finale, the 20 minute " The maid we messed" sees Elliott returning to the worldplay and hypervelocity breaks of his Third Eye Foundation recordings. Overall, however, Drinking Songs remains a work to be listened to with eyes closed - it's about the only way you can keep the room from spinning. CD COMES IN A DIGISLEEVE! All the tracks on "!" were released by Ici d'ailleurs between 2009 and 2012 on the three EPs, "Darling, darling, darling...", "Scandale !" and "Al Abama". They make up what was originally the first album by Chapelier Fou which was totally self-produced and self-distributed before he joined the label in 2009. All the compositions on this record except "Al Abama"and "Hahahahaha?" were written and recorded in 2007. Since then, Chapelier Fou has come a long way with the release of several albums ("613", "Invisible", "Deltas"), tours all over the world (Europe, Canada, China, Russia etc.) and increasingly frequent incursions into the audiovisual field ("Les Contes du Paris Perché") or interactive art ("Les Métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia"). However, it becomes quickly obvious that "!" is much more than a simple introductory work. It is a remarkably accomplished record which conveys all the richness of all of his work and suggests the riches to come. The record includes some of his most emblematic tracks such as the hypnotic "Darling, darling, darling" along with his unstoppable violin gimmick which testifies to the relevance of his approach from his beginnings. Chapelier Fou is putting the finishing touches to his new album planned for the beginning of 2017 and is very happy to present his very first songs in a version which is more in line with his original vision in terms of artwork and tracklisting, for example. Presenting "613" is surely no easy task for doing so is risking to be incomplete, approximative and quickly go short of words. Just like any masterpiece, talking about it can become perilous and let you fear it may blow up in your face like a grenade would. Indeed, 613 is the exact number of pellets contained in a grenade and the pick of this title by Louis Warynski (aka Chapelier Fou) is certainly no coincidence! Beside its whole-number title this record holds another beautiful incongruity, it respects the squaring of the circle so dear to quality music. "Mad, mysterious, bewitching, as strange as implacable..." is what you could think of this law of nature and of the music on this genuine debut album by Chapelier Fou. He is still the genial electronic fiddler and violin virtuoso that we had discovered on his first two EPs ("Darling, darling, darling..." & "Scandale") ! But the progression so far is stunning. No doubt that his numerous and remarkable performances on French stages (Printemps de Bourges 08 Discovery, Eurockéennes 09 Revelation) have made this one-man band more mature and led him to approach other instruments (guitar, cello or bouzouki) with his desires as the only limit. We already knew of the need for some originally electronic musicians to smartly have a go at classical music - Amon Tobin or Murcof, to name a few - but never before had we witnessed such a great balance between the genres. Under the stunningly fresh and powerfully catchy melodies, hides a multiple-layers album the nature of which can only be grabbed when listened to many (613 ?) times. On the classical side, his sensitivity, his catchy tunes and the choice of the violin as a central instrument recall altogether his elder brother Yann Tiersen ("Luggage", "Le quart de ton") and his fathers Gavin Bryars or Pinguin Cafe Orchestra ("Elle est l'eau qui fait le torrent", "Luggage"), or even his grand-father Stokhausen for the research on sounds. It is obvious Louis listened to those and even studied them when a student at the conservatory. Still, it would be absurd to stick to this simple comparison or to limit his electronic influence to Boards of Canada or Brian Eno for the ambiant moments, Amon Tobin or Four Tet for the perfect rhythms, Animal Collective for the intuitive fiddlings and the cheek. Just like any exceptional composer, Louis Warynski has been able to integrate his influences to produce his own unique version. At 26, Chapelier Fou is not only an outstanding acrobat on stage, he is also an alchemist able to create a new formula for each track with a rare intelligence and to bewilder his - often young - audience thanks to his savoir-faire and obvious generosity. No wonder then that Matt Elliott - offering his unique voice on "Half of the Time" - invited this magician to join The Third Eye Foundation alongside Yann Tiersen, both on stage and for the recording of a new album. The first demo by Zëro - the reincarnation of Bästard!, a group which had its origins in the Deity Guns (initiators of the French post-rock movement ) - is already 10 years old and "San Francisco" is their 5th album. A red album. just like there have been white albums or black albums. A major album in a discography, in the history of a group. The style is the same as can be recognized in all the records but the total break with the past is fascinating. Zëro now play as a trio and the group has gained in coherency. One after the other, the tracks flow fluidly together as a whole despite the complexity of the arrangements and the multiple cinematographic or musical references, with both sides of the record containing a mix of contained violence and tense atmospheres. But what is surprising about "San Francisco" is the tracks which are almost pop (in the best sense of the term, as The Feelies or Wire were immense pop groups) with their dynamic falsely laidback nonchalance which makes you want to jump in the car with the radio on full blast and speed down an ocean road. News from Ici D'Ailleurs Mind Travels Series: The May 2014 release of de Je vous dis by Geins't Naït and Laurent Petitgand was the starting point for the Mind Travels collection dedicated to ambient, neo-classical and industrial music. And the choice of this kind of album to inaugurate the series was far from insignificant because it perfectly synthesized a certain vision of the music we have always wanted to support. A backroads music which is often unusual, always poignant but not well-known enough despite the number of players involved. The resulting works share the will to liberate themselves from rules on creation and the music industry's generally accepted standards. It is often said that listening to music of whatever genre is a way of escaping and losing our bearings... In a word it's forgetting or Oublier. Forgetting what we are, what we think and what we think we know, letting go and opening up to a listening experience which can be just as physical as mental and also go into a phase of deconstruction of the senses and the mind... Geins't Naït and Laurent Petitgand have been musical activists for over 30 years and have fully understood this idea. Oublier, their second record for Mind Travels is definitely the finest illustration of that to date. However it is useful to point out that the two musicians come from very different backgrounds. Geins't Naït is the creator of industrial collages in a similar vein to the early work of Einsturzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle while Laurent Petitgand is best known for his many contributions to the films of Wim Wenders, the last of which, The Salt of The Earth, received 3 awards at the Cannes film festival (Un Certain Regard selection). Two seemingly opposing registers then but which are united here by their desire to escape from all forms of academism. As we might have expected, Oublier's main characteristic is that it doesn't really have any identifiable characteristics. Of course, we could simply pick out Laurent Petitgand's magnificent melodies ("Bodische Little Alone", "Past", "Brass"), a valid reason to listen to the album non-stop on their own. We could also just refer to how the dynamics dreamed up by Geins't Naït using hypnotic loops and manipulated samples are haunting ("Kenie", "26", "J'appartiens") and even completely alienating ("Discord", "Pluie"). We could actually spend hours on each track, trying to figure out its substance but this would ignore the fact that it is up to listeners to find their own meaning which they can be at home with. Each to his or her own listening experience. Because one of Oublier's main qualities is that it situates listeners at the centre of its universe so effectively and to such an extent that they actually become participants. Some will perceive a heightened melancholy, even a form of despair. Conversely others will be seduced by the record's evident beauty and the warmth it gives off. Whatever the case, its non-linearity favours total immersion and sometimes in the more intense moments totally letting go. Record Label: Ici D'Ailleurs Style: Experimental

News from Ici D'Ailleurs Mind Travels Series: Mathias Delplanque is an artist from Nantes who was born in Burkina Faso and has close links with the ambient, electronic, electro-acoustic and concrete musical spheres as well as dub and field recordings. His approach is therefore intimately intertwined with the creation of sound. Sound in the physical sense of the term, sound which goes through your body modifying your perception without ever giving into the academism which can sometimes be found in music in the field of pure musical sound research. There is no question of theorization here - rather questioning all the possibilities which enable an artistic vision to be pushed to reach its pinnacle. Mathias has been perfecting this approach to music for 15 years name under his own name or different pseudonyms (Bidlo, Lena). However, the premising underpinning the album we are discussing today is slightly different from that of his other productions. Normally Mathias takes his time to finely and obsessively sculpt his work down to the smallest detail but here Drachen (Dragons in German) reveals itself to be a much more direct and incisive album. Taking the idea that impurities can also give life to music as a starting point, he set himself a constant working rhythm and the aim of adding interference rather than the sublime going so far as to create actual interference with his mobile phone to disturb the rhythm and harmony of his compositions. By his own admission, he works urgently to induce mistakes or accidents to liberate himself from his own automatic reflexes. Drachen is therefore a dangerous album both for its author and for listeners. However the result remains impressive because, even though questioning accepted ideas is an essential facet of the record, there is an intact sensibility which provokes emotion. All sorts of instruments (guitar, bass, melodica, kora, synths etc.) are run through live electronic processing and he manages to bring a beautiful melancholy - even a certain tenderness - out of this sonic mass despite the roughness of the overall sound. The record is made up of 7 highly distinct pieces which nevertheless fit together as a coherent whole. Although instrumental, Drachen is a largely narrative album which recounts its own story. It is a necessary reminder that just sound and consequently silence are fantastic vectors for communication. At the end of the record, an eighth track makes an appearance to prolong the story and provide a conclusion for the album. The track is introduced by 2008 field recordings from the village of Gandefabou in northern Burkina Faso and offers a calm environment full of humanity. It is heavy with meaning given the current situation of this region of the world struggling with jihadism.
