Carey modern classical repetition pushed into the vernacular of electronic music and beat making. This is the warmest electronic music you'll ever meet. The beats swing, stutter and pulse while each instrument retains a heightened awareness of its form and function within the larger family of voices. Each of "Hoyas' songs has its own personality, each part inseparable from the body, and while the results might be surprising to some, they shouldn't be. S. Carey has historically illustrated a very rare breadth as an artist, not only as a member of Bon Iver, but on recordings of his own, whether from his debut full-length, "All We Grow", performing cover songs, or in remix work. With "Hoyas", Carey's uncontainable talent is hard at work exhibiting some of the deeper color palettes that music can offer. But most impressively, Carey's talent can now be seen to be growing by leaps and bounds. His range as a singer is progressing into much bolder territories, as evidenced not only on Hoyas but on the Bon Iver at AIR Studios recordings, where just his voice, Justin Vernon's voice and two pianos mesh perfectly to create an unforgettable performance for the ages. "Hoyas" started as a collaboration with a friend, Ben Lester, best known for his drumming and pedal steel work with A.A. Bondy. Carey and Lester began bouncing ideas back and forth a little over two years ago. They gradually came to four songs that had a life together. Recorded mostly in his attic studio with Lester, using a single laptop and not much else, the songs on "Hoyas" exemplify home recording's possibilities. Some sounds were composed by handcrafted instruments and others by junk. At times, Carey tracked vocals using nothing more than his laptop's internal microphone, and most of the beats and synthesized sounds were sequenced and arranged using stock-software. "Hoyas" was then mixed and produced by the Grammyaward-winning team of Justin Vernon and Brian Joseph of Bon Iver, and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Studios in Boston. These songs are for nighttime driving, for long exposures of stars circling overhead, for laying roadside, feeling small, for the cold rocks at Big Falls, for Marfa, that weird and beautiful oasis. BLACK MOUNTAIN's "Year Zero" soundtrack is nothing less than the band's full, balls-out glory distilled down to one dense, 45-minute acid tab of music. Featuring five new songs and five previously released songs, the "Year Zero" soundtrack weaves crunching, analog psych metal; futuristic droneouts; and, somehow, a twisted saxaphone ditty. So how on earth does a band like BLACK MOUNTAIN end up writing music in the name of the world's sunniest sport? Understand, "Year Zero" is nothing like your ordinary bro-time surfer flick. Shot around the world on 16mm film, "Year Zero" is set in a nearish future where the world as we know it has ended. Director Joe G. places the survivors in a damaged but stunningly beautiful place, a world where the reset button has been hit, where we hold onto the vestiges of the things we love, but those things become weightless, and the ensuing freedom is as exhilarating as it is scary. To simply call it post-apocalyptic is to undermine the imagination that Joe G. brings to the world's remains, and "Year Zero" is ultimately as much a "surf movie" as it is a movie about Earth illustrated through surfing. Given the new world set forth in "Year Zero", it's as if BLACK MOUNTAIN have been set free of the boundaries that "making a record" impose. Much of the new material is driven by expansive, synth-driven swirls and a dangerous, rumbling low end. Outlaw vibes, to be sure. BLACK MOUNTAIN's psychedelia has never been anchored to any one style, time, or genre. But with "Year Zero", BLACK MOUNTAIN go to a place that is intergalactic and downright ruthless, with a sound big enough to stand up to the vastness of the ocean, the bigness of the sun, and the lives of the people left living. Included is a special download of unreleased recordings that I have come to know as the Ev Sessions; recorded by Ev Olcott, the great master of Minneapolis studio magic and former member of 12Rods and Halloween, Alaska. Ev produced these sessions after the release of "It's All Aquatic" sometime in 2004. These sessions are considered 'un-finished' by the band but stand as a fantastic 'that could have been' document.
