On the farm in rural Australia where 24-year-old Sophie Payten - AKA Gordi - grew up, there's a paddock that leads down to a river. A few hundred meters away sits another house, which belongs to her 93-year-old grandmother. The rest, she says, "is just beautiful space. And what else would you fill it with if not music?" And so she did, first tinkling away on an out-of-tune piano, and then on the acoustic guitar she got for her 12th birthday. Gordi's first foray into songwriting came in the form of performances at her school's weekly chapel. There the chrysalis of the music she's making now â?? a brooding, multi-layered blend of electronica and folk, with lyrics that tend to avoid well-trodden paths -- began to form. "I often find that writing about platonic relationships," she says, "can be a great deal more powerful than writing about romantic ones." "Heaven I Know," the first single from Gordi's debut album Reservoir, is an example of just that. With the breathy chant of "123" chugging along beneath the song's sparse melody and melancholic piano chords, "Heaven I Know" gazes at the embers of a fading friendship. The ramifications of loss ripple throughout Reservoir, which she wrote and recorded in Wisconsin, Reykjavik, Los Angeles, and Sydney. Gordi produced two of the tracks herself ("Heaven I Know" and "I'm Done"), and co-produced the rest. When it comes down to it, the running thread of the album is its lyrics. "Music is kind of what encases this story that you're trying to tell," says Gordi. Her stories are stark, honest, and soul-searching. Like "the trifecta" of Billy Joel, Carole King and James Taylor that sound-tracked her upbringing, she's unafraid to sit in contemplative melancholy â?? a place she calls, fittingly, "the reservoir."

Ende 2013, als die PREOCCUPATIONS noch auf den Namen VIET CONG hörten, veröffentlichten sie eine winzige Auflage einer nur auf Kassette erhältlichen EP, die sie nur während einer einzigen Tour ausverkauften. Zuvor hatten Matt Flegel und Scott Munro über ein Jahr hinweg in ihrem Kellerstudio mit einem Sammelsurium von altem und gebrauchten Equipment gearbeitet, um neues, frisches Material zusammenzustellen. Over the course of a year, Matt Flegel and Scott Munro worked in their basement studio with a mess of old and run down equipment to build a set of fresh material. Joined by bandmates Daniel Christiansen and Michael Wallace, the band completed work on an debut cassette. What emerged from the studio was a mixture of sharply-angled rhythm workouts and euphoric 60s garage pop-esque melodies, balanced with a penchant for drone-y, VU-styled downer moments, and became a hard-to-find classic.

Brothers Ruban and Kody Nielson have been playing, recording and collaborating on music for decades. From the influences of their jazz musician father and dancer mother, Ruban and Kody have gone on to play in New Zealand's The Mint Chicks, and at its end in 2010, moved on to separate projects. Ruban formed Unknown Mortal Orchestra out of Portland, while Kody collaborated with various artists and musicians before his own solo project, SILICON, took shape. At the end of 2015, as UMO's Multi-Love and SILICON's Personal Computer made the rounds, garnering critical acclaim, Ruban and Kody (who played keyboards and drums on UMO's Multi-Love) took some time to rework tracks from each of their records. The theme of phones led to Kody working on UMO's "Can't Keep Checking My Phone," changing it from a bouncy, sprite disco track to a sparser song filled with space, treated vocals and isolated drum breaks. Ruban's rework of SILICON's "Cellphone" is turned moody and dark, with a skittering beat and additional vocals. The limited edition Phone 7" is available on April 1, 2016

A total rejuvenation of the band, these were some of the most downright glorious and visceral shows The Besnard Lakes had played to date, blowing the roof off venue after venue with an enviable catalogue of anthems. As soon as they were back from tour, Lasek and Goreas hunkered down to write some of the most definitive Besnard Lakes songs to date. The Golden Lion, taken from the forthcoming album, is a perfect distillment of everything that is great about the band. A kaleidoscopic Beatles-esque verse gives way to one of the most glorious Besnard Lakes choruses yet delivered, a true classic in the making. The addition of piano flourishes, trumpet (Darby Cicci of The Antlers), hidden acoustic guitars and Kaede Ford's ethereal vocals provide new dimensions to the band's already expansive sonic palette. Cut-to-the-chase rippers "Back at Belle's" & "Checkpoints" embody & build on the group's signature gritty yet focused electronic sound. While the more pastoral tracks, such as "Between Leos," & "XX Century," skeletally based on recorded improvisations, find the band painting a more nuanced, assured aural portrait. The repeating of the line "twentieth century" on closer, "XX Century", serves as a coda for the album, offering a simple summation of what Best Blues' intent has been from the opening Casio stab: an attempt to re-examine the past, but also one to let it go.

From start to rising stardom, Van Etten has forever understood the impact of economy. It should come as no surprise, then, that the five-song EP I Don't Want to Let You Down offers documents of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing in only 22 minutes. Produced by Van Etten and Stewart Lerman, who also helmed Are We There, these songs are as sophisticated as anything Van Etten has ever done. Supported by a string section during "I Always Fall Apart," Van Etten's voice rises alongside her piano. Her prismatic harmonies betray the terror of the song's central admission and one of the new lyrical cornerstones of her catalogue: "You know I always fall apart/It's not my fault/It's just my flaw/It's who I am." During the title track, she slowly pushes her voice past an introductory murmur, as if scanning her surroundings for the resolve to be stronger and more steadfast than she knows she has been. Building across four minutes, the desperation of the title is expressed through guitars that get bigger, harmonies that get broader. The chorus is a sing-along commandment, an indelible promise Van Etten makes to be better. The War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel and David Hartley join Antibalas' Stuart Bogie, Peter Broderick and Heather Woods-Broderick for "Pay My Debts." The longest song here, it's a cinematic number that smolders like shoegaze before climaxing into an inescapable seesaw refrain. The EP ends with a live rendition of "Tell Me."
