Stripping away even more percussion than on its predecessor, “II” saw Marcus Worgull and Danilo Plessow zooming in on ambience, texture and sonic cohesiveness, allowing “each electronic voice to come into focus” (Pitchfork). Now, “II REMIXES” puts the beat back into the mix, thanks to iconic artists DIXON, I:CUBE and WASSERMANN who each develop their own irresistible groove out of the immersive source material. As one of the album’s most highlighted cuts, DSCHUNA gets the royal treatment by Innervisions head and internationally revered selector DIXON who proves his strong command of the dance floor with a hypnotic ride that surrounds the soaring sounds of the original with tribal- esque vocals. The instrumental version drops the chants, but retains the enchantment, all elegant rhythm and gorgeous strings. We continue THE ORB's SIN IN SPACE remix EP series with a third volume focussing on the duo's latest full-length, the highly acclaimed COW / CHILL OUT, WORLD! (KOMPAKT 354 CD 134). The spontaneous, organic vibe and sample artistry of the album is reflected in three distinct reworks from highly respected Kompakt mainstays THE FIELD, DAVE DK and JÖRG BURGER - all of them informed with surprising twists and displaying a clear lineage to the source material. THE FIELD's remix of 9 ELMS OVER RIVER ENO takes the original's percussive part and unfolds it to a swirling, tropical epic that alludes as much to The Orb's multifaceted sound collages as it does to the hypnotic, looping flow of The Field's own output. Meanwhile, DAVE DK turns in a club-friendly revamp of 4AM EXHALE with the fittingly titled ACCELLERATOR MIX, indulging in exquisitely lyrical glitches and the magic of the straight bassdrum. Returning to Kompakt after his quirky label debut Mission To Bars (Kompakt 347), transcendental house music producer CLARIAN resumes his search for mesmerizing soundscapes with a surreal hue on the ANKH EP. Three new tracks continue the spaceman chronicles, with the last EPs protagonist embarking on a grander adventure than ever before – our unfortunate hero, who initially got stuck in a bar on a strange planet, now intends to travel to the outer rim of the known cosmos in a desperate bid to stop the ancient evil army of the space zombie lizard kings. At least thats what hes trying to do – unprecedented turmoil brought him to a moon rave in the Hipston Galaxy, the dopest galaxy with the freshest Eco-galactic-friendly products and politically correct views on Space Blobs. And its here that the spaceman spends the next three years in an awesome blur of party photons and anti-gravitational break beats... until that fateful moment during an after party in an illegal crater with Ricardo Villaroboto, when hes doing bumps of Kryptonite with a Zorgonian in a bathroom stall and hears about the space zombie lizard kings for the first time. Their formidable stupidity and greed for brains has the potential to destroy the very fabric of space and time, a very troubling thing for people who care about existence and stuff. Only one mysterious object is powerful enough to take down the zombie lizard empire and restore balance to the universe: its called ANKH and emits its dreamy harmonics, glistening synth motives and gentle beat throbs from deep within a crystallized pyramid. Just as the spaceman is about to respond – probably with a heroic vow to the good cause -, the 17-tentacled DJ drops the slightly nostalgic OLD MIAMI, a groovy, hypnotic late-night jam for the raving flâneur (also a reference to a dive bar in Detroit where CLARIAN played one of his first shows) and our hero euphorically sneezes so hard that he accidentally sprays the Kryptonite all over the floor – while smacking his space helmet against the wall behind him. Several million moon cycles later, he wakes up with a pounding headache, freely floating in space. Completely alone and with out a single glass of whiskey to take the edge off, he starts feebly humming to himself – a song called ALIENATED that perfectly showcases CLARIANs well-documented knack for catchy weirdness, letting its main motive glitch in all the right places. Following releases on imprints such as Multi Culti, Soft Touch, Rumors or Turbo, plus a stint as mixer, arranger and audio engineer on Tigas last album No Fantasy Required, this latest offering reveals an artist that has built himself a strong pedigree with fans of immersive, melodic dance music – but still manages to surprise with ambidextrous sound design and that refreshing tang of absurdity that seems to be his specialty. This skill set gels naturally with the sonic sensibilities of iconic experimental composer SCANNER who teams up with Onodera for the cut LOCUS SOLUS - it’s an incredible honour to have such a towering figure in advanced electronic music on board. Wolfgang Voigt is a man of many means and monickers, having engendered a unique take on electronic expressionism across multiple media - from riotous early 90s acid to cyber-folkloristic techno or the abstract drama of his current Rückverzauberung project, a pioneering vision to be found on vinyl, canvas or flickering screens. Ranking among of the most dense, hypnotic, atmospheric recordings in his oeuvre, the GAS releases have since become internationally recognized classics with a cult following, hailed as "a wonderous high point in the history of electronic music" (Pitchfork) and "some of the most influential albums of the 90s" (The Guardian). From foggy dub techno to anthemic electronica and loop-based ambient techno, the list of acts, tracks and even genres influenced by the full-lengths and EPs crafted under the GAS umbrella between 1995 and 2000 seems endless, giving these long sold-out original releases even more of a near-mythical quality. Following the much-acclaimed (and out-of-print) retrospective NAH UND FERN from 2008, Kompakt has decided that it's high time for a reissue that features the core GAS albums originally released by the legendary Mille Plateaux imprint in the 90s – the records that introduced the project’s trademark sound between Schönberg and Kraftwerk, Wagner and the bassdrum, “an endless march through the underwoods of an imaginary, misty forest and into the disco.” Inside this comprehensive anthology, listeners will experience ZAUBERBERG (celebrating the 20th anniversary of this essential album), KÖNIGSFORST, POP and the sought-after OKTEMBER 12", all together available as luxurious 10LP+4CD edition. Topping off an incredible run that included last year’s releases SICKO (KOMPAKT 322) and YOU ARE A BLADE (KOMPAKT 343), UK producer and long-time Kompakt ally REX THE DOG presents two brand new jams on TEUFELSBERG - this latest offering connects the dots between the powerful, melody-driven techno of Rex’s earlier works and his current set-up that favors muscular, raw tracks with a distinctive analog bite. The latter is no accident, as Rex has become increasingly involved in DIY synth design, building his own modular hardware for studio and live use. Title cut TEUFELSBERG starts off lean and mean, quickly establishing momentum with propulsive beats and a simple, but seriously effective bass line – the track’s main protagonist, however, is a sweeping melody blowing up for the track’s entire run time, an utterly scenic synth job that doesn’t even flinch from a ground zero break.
