20th February 1971 Show From The Band’s Run At The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Grateful Dead’s six night run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York in February 1971, which extended from the 17th - 23rd (six shows across seven nights), marked the beginning of Mickey Hart's temporary departure from the band; his last show with the Dead was on 17th February 1981, until his return on 20th October 1974. The 20th February concert included the second ever appearance of the classic ‘Wharf Rats’, a song that later gave name to Deadheads who were living alcohol and narcotic free. The opening act for this series of concerts was New Riders Of The Purple Sage, which at the time featured Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. Record Label: Left Field Media Style: Psychedelic Rock

By early 1974 Frank Zappa was touring with a smaller band of musicians, albeit one still going under The Mothers Of Invention moniker. This ensemble variously included Ian Underwood (reeds, keyboards), Ruth Underwood (vibes, marimba), Sal Marquez (trumpet, vocals),Napoleon Murphy Brock (sax, flute and vocals), Bruce Fowler (trombone), Tom Fowler (bass), Chester Thompson (drums), Ralph Humphrey (drums), George Duke (keyboards, vocals), and Jean-Luc Ponty (violin), the majority of whom also appeared on Zappa’s twoalbums released that year: March’s “solo” LP Apostrophe, and September’s Roxy And Elsewhere (largely recorded live at the end of ’73). In the latter months of the 1974, he was out again, but now just with Murphy-Brock, Duke, Thompson and Ruth Underwood – for reasons unknown husband Ian was not onboard. It was this line-up who performed with Frank at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI on 23rd November, a show which was recorded for live FM Broadcast, albeit only by the University’s own radio station, making reception ofthe gig fairly limited in its geographical scope. This show is now available on this double CD set, a recording rarely heard before and one that Zappa fans will certainly wish to add to their collections. Record Label: Left Field Media Style: Rock

BEACH BOYS NASSAU COLISEUM 1974 - Classic Beach Boys Broadcast Recording Of A Show Hailed As Being Among Their Best Ever By 1974, due in part to the shrewd organisational skills of new-boys Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin alongside those of BB evergreen Mike Love, the success of two Greatest Hits albums and the mega-selling 1973 In Concert album, The Beach Boys were being dubbed one of the best American live acts around, even rivalling the likes of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for ticket sales. The band s renewed, positive profile was summed up best by Rolling Stone, who named them their Band Of The Year. The Beach Boys performed 100-plus shows across North America in 1974, and on 14th June they packed out the 14,500-capacity Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, performing what is now hailed as one of the group s finest ever shows. The subject of a live FM radio broadcast transmitted across the United States, the group played an extraordinary setlist featuring cuts from across their career, including the best tracks from their more recent albums like Holland, Carl And The Passions and Surf s Up alongside their better known 1960s hits, giving this concert an eclectic edge, a dynamic feel, and a delightful ambience. LIVE BROADCAST RECORDING FROM TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKER S CLASSIC FILLMORE SHOWS During the early 1990s they d been on a hiatus of sorts, but by 95 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had fully reunited to coincide with the release of their six CD Playback box set. CLASSIC ERA MANASSAS - LIVE BROADCAST FROM THE WEST COAST When Manassas took the stage on 7th October 1973, on the final night of their Winterland engagement that year, they had no idea it would turn out to be one of their last performances. Playing a wealth of material from their debut double album, a few choice numbers from their second record, and with some choice surprises in store, it would turn out to be one of the group s most memorable shows. The first set kicks off with a fully electric performance containing side one of their debut, performed in sequence. Both Stills and Al Perkins, who plays an impressive second lead guitar, as well as pedal steel, provide the bulk of the solos, and by this point in time they had become quite adept at complimenting each other. Chris Hillman then leads the group into a fine rendition of The Byrds' hit So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star , providing an unexpected but delightful conclusion to this 18-minute sequence. Johnny's Garden provides some lighter relief with its laidback folk-rock vibe before they conclude this first set with the smouldering blues cut Go Back Home , a standout track from Stills' first solo record. At this point, Chris Hillman and Al Perkins take control and begin the country and bluegrass portion of the show. Sandwiched between two Burrito Brothers standards ( Six Days On The Road and You're Still On My Mind ) are three impressive numbers, including an early version of Hillman's Safe At Home , soon to be recorded with the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Stills also shines during this section on lovely versions of Fallen Eagle and Hide It So Deep , both also from the first Manassas album. Following an intermission, Manassas kick their second electric set off with the Latin-flavoured rocker Pensamiento , one of the standout tracks from their recently released second album, followed by a rousing rendition of 49 Bye-Byes . Considerably different than its CS&N LP incarnation, this segues directly into an impressive percussion solo by Joe Lala and then concludes with a passage of the Buffalo Springfield classic, For What It s Worth . Following introductions of the band members, Chris Hillman delivers a smoking rendition of Lies , another highlight from the sophomore album. David Crosby joins in on electric guitar for the final section of the show as the group sinks their collective teeth into The Treasure , which evolves into a bluesy groove, washed in Stills' fierce electric slide guitar, which then rips into Carry On . This is a smoking conclusion to the set that leaves the Winterland audience up on their feet and clamouring for more. Stills eventually obliges, returning to the stage with his acoustic for a solo reading of Daylight Again , a number totally new to the audience at the time, which segues directly into Find The Of Freedom . During the latter song, the entire band, as well as Crosby and Nash return to the stage and join Stills in an a cappella singalong to send the enraptured audience on its way. NEW JERSEY BROADCAST 1977 - POSSIBLY, THE BEST DEAD SHOW EVER Die-hard fans of the Grateful Dead have their favourite shows. And often their favourite years too; for many 1977 stands out. By now the band had left behind their cosmic, psychedelic shows, a feature of their 60s performances, and was putting together more crafted sets that mixed songs from their growing repertoire of folk, country, blues and rock music. By the time they reached Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey on 3rd September 77, they had finished one of their most successful tours, and subsequently played what many fans consider the best Dead show ever. At Raceway Park, 100,000 fans showed up to soak up the heat and the Grateful Dead. The results can now be heard again on this superb three CD set which features the entire show, as broadcast live by WNEW FM New York and transmitted across the Northern East Coast. The Dead’s NYE 1972 show at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco was no exception.
