180 GRAM/INSERT/PVC SLEEVE The Cotton Club is a 1984 drama, centered around the famous Harlem jazz club of the 1930's. The story follows the people that visited the club, those that ran it, and is peppered with the Jazz music that made it so famous. Combining song and dance performances with drama (both on and off screen), Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club looks back to the 1920s peak of the legendary Harlem nightclub where only blacks performed and only whites could sit in the audience. Coppola creates a panorama of love, crime, and entertainment centered on the club. The cast exists, among others, out of Richard Gere, Gregory Hines, Diane Lane, and Lonette Mckee. John Barry's efforts at supervising, scoring, and recreating the energetic jive and wail of the era very nearly carry the day. His adaptations of standards by Ellington and Cab Calloway are reverent yet energetic, infused by original music that weaved it into an accessible and rewarding tapestry of time, place, and art. This is a great soundtrack!

180 GRAM / INSERT / By All Means Necessary is the second album from legendary American hip hop group Boogie Down Productions, and was originally released in 1988. The murder of DJ Scott La Rock in 1987 had a profound effect on KRS-One, resulting in a drastic rethinking of his on-record persona. He re-emerged the following year with By All Means Necessary, calling himself The Teacher and rapping mostly about issues facing the black community. He refuses to allow the community to be stereotyped. His observations are sharp, lucid, and confident. Yet he doesn't fall prey to the peachiness that would mark some of his later work. There are some lighter moments in the battlerhyme tracks, and a witty safe-sex rap in "Jimmy". This album is widely considered a landmark in political hip hop and is among the Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. The lyrics from this album have been sampled by everyone from Prince Paul to N.W.A.

Harris is best known for introducing the electrically amplified saxophone. The music on this record is by turns swinging, touching, and peaceful bursting with new ideas generated from Harris' plunge into electronics. There is good old Latinized funk in the opening cuts, "Free at Last" and "1974 Blues". Silver Cycles peaked #3 in the Jazz Albums Chart in 1969.

180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL Recorded live in front of a packed concert hall, or full house if you will, "Live" Full House is the third album by the J. Geils Band. Originally released in 1972, the record peaked at number 54 on the Billboard album chart in the USA. The Boston based band's first live album was recorded over two nights in April of 2 at the Cinderella Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan, and kind of set up things for the breakthrough success of their next album - especially the tracks "Serves You Right To Suffer" and "Looking For A Love" which enjoyed quite some radio airplay in the States. The live album itself charted for 26 weeks and was eventually certified Gold. Combining Chicago Blues and Classic Rock (and throwing in some Motown too), the J. Geils Band's raw energy seems to jump out of the speakers like a burning locomotive. One of the best live albums ever pressed on vinyl, the only complaint one could have is that the album is too short. Be assured that this rock 'n' roll onslaught is a blast from start to finish.
