Following the success of Pulp Fiction and an "easy tune" hype, The Treble Spankers got massive airplay with the single "Red Hot Navigator" on Dutch national radio. These musical omnivores didn't care a rap for trends and externals. They provided magnificent songs by diverse artists such as Kraftwerk, Herb Alpert and 2 Unlimited with new energy. Casually, they added a few classics to music history by means of their own brilliant compositions. Their music is rebellious, and as mysterious as the swamps of Sumatra, and expresses the mysticism of the American Indians. Between 1993 and 1996, The Treble Spankers played over 500 shows in Europe. The band played a packed Roskilde tent at the Pinkpop festival in front of 10,000 jumping fans and the album Hasheeda ended up selling an impressive 20,000 copies in the Netherlands alone. The Frames' line-up for Fitzcarraldo features Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals, Colm Mac Con Iomaire on violin, Graham Downey on bass guitar and keyboards, Dave Odlum on lead guitar, Paul Brennan on drums and Noreen O'Donnell on backing vocals. The title track's name comes from Werner Herzog's 1982 film Fitzcarraldo which frontman Hansard describes as being about a man "pulling a ship over a mountain". The album has been the go-to document for the long-running Dublin band's early sound. Actually, it's not all that different from the punchy, emotional Rock sound that would define them for over a decade following. Led by the passionate and fearless Glen Hansard, The Frames always remain listenable while liberally pouring out their every embarrassing emotion;
the deft violin, cello, and keys that flesh out the songs help prevent too much confessional melodrama. Hansard is a belter, but his earnest vulnerability on songs like "Giving It All Away" draws an empathetic response anyway. "Revelate," a statement of purpose as deeply felt as the best of U2's early singles, would justifiably come to be a live fan favorite.

Keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin came together in 1991 for gigs at New York's Village Gate and never looked back, touring relentlessly and issuing a succession of stimulating recordings that embraced Soul-Jazz, Bebop, Funk, R&B, DJ culture and the avantgarde, often at the same time. A master improviser with a trademark distortion-tinged tone, Scofield cut his teeth with Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Charles Mingus and Gary Burton before his work with Miles Davis catapulted him into the limelight in the 1980s. Since then, he's become universally known as one of the greatest fi gures in Jazz guitar history. The blueprint for their 2014 album Juice was found in a compilation of African-derived music put together by drummer Billy Martin and shared among the ensemble. "We all love music from Brazil, the Caribbean, and Latin America, and it has always been intertwined with jazz," explains Medeski. "We got together and started exploring that connection in our own way." "This is our version of different African-based forms," Scofield echoes. "Or, at least, that's what we started with.eventually we said, 'This is the outline, but we can do whatever the hell we want.'"

In hip circles it was known as the "new thing"-Portuguese translation: bossa nova. Brazilian Folk, Samba, Pop and American Jazz formed the basis of a new music, featuring subtle rhythms and highly lyrical melodies. Singer Joao Gilberto and composer / pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim are two of the most important men responsible for the creation of Bossa Nova. Herbie Mann has always enjoyed a reputation as a musical internationalist. He was the leading exponent of Afro-Cuban music in the Jazz and Pop music fi elds. Mann was also one of the first American musicians to hear the new Brazilian music when he journeyed to that country, and he was fascinated by it. On his return to the Unites States, Mann introduced the music to audiences wherever he played. In 1965, Mann fl ew to Rio to record with a group of Brazilian musicians. Antonio Carlos Jobim helped him prepare the material for the recording sessions, and developed a great respect for Mann's understanding of and his ability to play Brazilian music. Jobim plays piano on several tracks and sings on "One Note Samba". Joao Gilberto has come to be recognized as the voice of the new Brazilian music.

Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash's Bitter Tears Revisited, produced by Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville), features American music giants Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Bill Miller, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Norman and Nancy Blake, as well as up-and-comers the Milk Carton Kids and Rhiannon Giddens, interpreting the music of Bitter Tears for a new generation. The album coincides with the documentary We're Still Here: Johnny Cash's Bitter Tears Revisited, which traces the history of Bitter Tears and the making of Look Again To The Wind. The film is directed by Antonio D'Ambrosio, author of A Heartbeat And A Guitar, a book about the making of Bitter Tears. Its cover artwork is designed by well-known artist Shepard Fairey, who designed the iconic Barack Obama "Hope" Poster and the Led Zeppelin album cover for Mothership, among other works.
