Now Glass has been reworked across two fresh 12' releases via Ninja Tune. For the second 12', album cut 'Red Glass' is partnered with Hieroglyphic Being's remix of the same track - following the release of his much sought after and critically acclaimed album for Technicolour Records, he provides a tranced out dispersion of the original. It shares it's slab of wax with Beau Wanzer's remake of 'Fuel The Fire' - the original becoming a stuttering, looping rhythm of brooding intensity. An artist who has always preferred to make music than to talk about it, in AZD he has achieved another remarkable landmark, one which is as resistant to interpretation as it is demanding of it. X22RME is a key note example of the influence the Black artists James Hampton and Rammellzee had on the creation of the album – a man who created art through Sourcing castaway materials from their environment and reinterpreting them into absolute majesty given from the fourth dimension. The simplest you could say about AZD is that its art – the unique creation of a unique mind. There will be few more distinctive, brilliant or visionary suites of music released in 2017. Archie Fairhurst, aka Romare, gets amorous with his second album. A kind of follow-up or development of his second ever release, a four track EP entitled 'Love Songs: Part One', 'Love Songs: Part Two', explores every nook and cranny of the romantic impulse from dirty sex to religious fervour across ten tracks which develop and expand upon the casual brilliance of his debut, Projections, establishing him as one of the most exciting, confident and distinctive producers in electronic music right now. Love Songs: Part Two shows him expanding, deepening and developing his techniques. Although sampling from vinyl still plays a key role in his practice, Fairhurst has played much more of the music on this new record, from monophonic synthesisers to his grandmother's recorder and his dad's mandolin, with electric bass, plus a variety of guitars and keyboards taking central roles, too. First single 'Who Loves You?' starts with a hard four-to-the-floor, a tight swirl of strings and the kind of b-line which recalls the greatest moments of punk-funk. 'Come Close To Me' has the sort of unquantized swing which Theo Parrish would be proud of. 'Je T'Aime' comes on as if disco had been invented by the Irish. 'L.U.V' takes a moment of unalloyed beauty and then resolves into a lowdown groove, a kind of unlatched funk which will set pants swinging. 'All Night' is a good-time floorfiller. Album closer 'My Last Affair' is swinging, slinky and trippy by turns. 'Honey' builds from a kind of nursery rhyme simplicity into a psychedelic hymn. Championed by Four Tet, Gilles Peterson, J. Swinscoe (The Cinematic Orchestra) and Kamasi Washington (whom Sarathy supported on his recent UK tour), Sarathy Korwar released his exceptional debut album "Day To Day" - a triumphant fusion of traditional Siddi folk music from India (combining East African, Sufi and Indian influences) with jazz and electronics - in July 2016. It was a collaborative release by Ninja Tune with The Steve Reid Foundation – a charitable trust established by Brownswood / Gilles Peterson with the dual objective of helping musicians in crisis and also supporting emerging talent. Sarathy is an alumnus of the foundation’s development program, mentored by Four Tet, Emanative, Floating Points, Koreless and Gilles Peterson – all trustees of the foundation. Now Tenderlonious (22a / Yoruba Records / Sounds Of The Universe), Photay (Astronautico) and Emanative (Brownswood) step up on remix duties for Sarathy Korwar with truly stellar results. The trio of reworks will be released via Ninja Tune x Steve Reid Foundation on 12”/Digital formats on 28th October 2016. Tenderlonious is in a rich vein of form following killer 12”s for Soul Jazz Records’ Sounds Of The Universe imprint, Osunlade’s Yoruba Records and his own 22a label. He delivers a supremely swung house groove characteristic of Peckham’s dancefloors as much as it is reminiscent of Detroit’s heartbeat. Hailing from Woodstock, Photay has released two mightily impressive, uniquely crafted, charming and musical EPs on Astronautico since 2014. His remix of ‘Bismillah’ is similarly smart, nuanced but also BANGING as wild horns adorn a throwback “Freestyle” dance groove. With Human Energy, Travis Stewart (aka Machinedrum) has made a career-defining album, one which will take him from best-kept-secret of the electronic music cognoscenti to breakout star of the US music scene. Why and how? The simple answer is that he’s fallen in love and moved to California, let in light and warmth to his always technically stunning productions. The complex answer is, well, more complicated. But then, you can spend forever trying to explain or you can just revel in this remarkable album. Let’s begin with the simple. Written between January and April 2016, the record “reflects a period of great change in my life. I moved across the country to a new city, I proposed to the girl of my dreams, I moved into a new house, bought a brand new computer and set off to write a new album.” But as well as these personal elements, moving to California allowed Stewart to explore a long-held interest in “esoteric and new age concepts… When I was younger I started researching energy healing, meditation and other pseudosciences after learning that my great grandfather was a healer.” Somehow, these ideas began to provide a vitality and intensity for his music-making: “I played the songs for friends and their immediate reaction was that the songs made them feel something in their bodies, like the music was pouring energy into them. I realized that I was creating an album that will make people feel something instantly, connecting my intention with the listener.” Stewart is well aware that some of these ideas will come over as “straight up cheesy.” His best rebuttal is his album, which astounds over and over again with the sheer brilliance of its execution, the warmth and beauty it resonates with, and yes, the unremitting energy of the music. Who can say if Human Energy can heal you? It will certainly leave you with a huge, goofy smile slathered all over your face. From opener “Lapis,” Machinedrum sets out his stall — an arpeggio ascending to heaven which, apparently building towards the mother of all drops, instead fades up and off into the ether. The music throughout is scintillating, from the mind-candy riffs of “White Crown” (featuring some crazy guitar work from Tosin Abasi of progressive metal band Animals As Leaders), the ecstatic d&b finale of “Do It 4 U” (an absolute stand-out with showstopper vox from singer-of-the-moment D∆WN), the smile-inducing, melodic brilliance of “Color Communicator,” or the precision and build of first single “Dos Puertas,” featuring Rihanna collaborator Kevin Hussein. Hussein, D∆WN and Abasi aren’t the only collaborators to have bought into this new take on the Machinedrum universe. Fresh off the back of two prominent collabs on Beyonce’s Lemonade, MeLo-X offers understated, classy assistance on the wonderful “Angel Speak,” sitting his voice in amongst heavenly vocal chops. Jesse Boykins III offers a moment of astral r&b goodness on “Celestial Levels.” Rochelle Jordan provides the lift off as Machinedrum works the rhythm flips on “Tell U.” There are telling contributions, too, from Ruckazoid, Roses Gabore and SK Simeon. You could in fact, pick almost any track from this record and argue that it is a standout, all of which adds to the sense that Travis Stewart, having discovered that rare thing—spirituality and purity in electronic music—is about to have a very big year. “It’s an exchange of energy through sound,” he finishes by telling us. “It’s a healing experience.
