The career of Animals That Swim has already been dissected once on this blog many entries ago, so its probably pointless me picking their progress (or lack thereof) to pieces yet again. Lets just begin by saying that Workshy, their debut album, is nothing like as wonderful as the work which followed it on I Was The King, but the flashes of brilliance contained within certainly make it worth a listen if you followed my advice and went away to purchase its younger brother. Where King lilts and soars, Workshy fizzes, jabs and jangles, sounding like a quintessential indie disc. From the opening line of I cant wake up, the skys too dull to rouse me and the clanging guitar lines which back it, its clearly not an album with its eyes on the top ten, even though the band have since said that they were always aiming to make popular records. Lyrically its also a less cheery prospect, but somehow still frequently hilarious, using wit to bring sparkle to the least likely subjects. The motor crash tale of Pink Carnations somehow manages to cover the subject with a chirpy, brassy backing, and even turns its attention to the absurdity of celebrity at the end when it mentions a famous hospital visiting bald shithead with a teddy bear. We can only speculate who this might have been. Elsewhere, the astounding, marginally Go-Betweens-esque Silent Film paints an outer London suburban picture which manages to be both delicate and recognizable, and their interpretation of Charles Bukowskis Sway with Me is also surprising in that, unlike most melodic interpretations of poetry, it works just as well as the rest of the material on the album and fits its jagged nature perfectly. Animals That Swim could almost be Bukowskis British backing band, swaying with bleary eyes behind him. Workshy should be approached with a bit more caution than perhaps most of their other work in that its an imperfect whole. Susies Friends and Saint Francis, for example, almost become dirges at points. However, considering you can download the lot for free below, whos complaining? In this case, the record sellers on ebay and Amazon probably wont be worried about some obscure blog cutting into their trade – I noticed that one major site was selling it for 68 cents recently. At that sort of retail price, you might want to get yourself a proper copy after downloading this, a vinyl rip which unfortunately doesnt have mint sound. An intense listen swelling with mystery, ‘Euphoria’ is a captivating introduction to s a r a s a r a’s truly ambitious and individual sound. s a r a s a r a’s infatuation with electronic music at a young age found her seeking out clubs in Belgium at sixteen years old. She says: “I fell in love right away with the music, the people like a community, the freedom, the craziness, the whole nightlife way of thinking. I met fascinating people with such an incredible knowledge of all types of music, as they’d been playing in clubs since the 80’s. Having cut her teeth as a DJ, she yearned to further her creative outlet and she sold her record collection and decks and purchased gear to begin creating her own music. Combining a diverse range of influences such as Warp stalwarts LFO, Björk, Vanessa Paradis, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds along with her interest in philosophy, literature and film, s a r a s a r a found her voice as a bold and unique artist, with a true vision. Graced with an enchanting voice tinged with mystery, s a r a s a r a has cultivated a precise and startling individual sound and aesthetic. She says: “ Music definitely has a concrete function for me. It’s not art for art’s sake, it’s an opportunity to get introspective. I have always felt the urge to question and master myself in order to make the best decisions, to make the most of the short time that I have in this life or body. I want every little thing to be exactly as I want it to be, as if I wanted it to repeat for eternity.” “I always start from my point of view, my experiences, what I see around me, what I feel and I try to make something out of it, a kind of rule or manifesto for myself that will lead to concrete actions or decisions. This process takes a lot of time, it requires solitude. It can be very confusing but in the end, you always come up with a new piece of the puzzle that is you. One Little Indian announce signing of New York-based artist-producer Don DiLego to the label, coupled with the premiere of his brand new single ‘Drive Like Pirates’ on Folk Radio. Don is currently on tour with label-mate Jesse Malin, and plans to release his full-length album ‘Magnificent Ram A’ later this year. The lead track is taken from forthcoming album ‘Magnificent Ram A’, recorded in Portland, OREGON with producer/engineer Gregg Williams (Blitzen Trapper, Dandy Warhols, The Decemberists), and at the wooded Pennsylvania retreat that is Velvet Elk Studios. “‘Drive Like Pirates’ came out of a late-night session with just myself and guitarist Marwan Kanafani,” explains Don. “Our goal was to create a vintage sounding 70’s track, but with no drums. So all the rhythm on the track is us stomping and clapping into the wee hours of the morning. And it ended up sounding like a thunderous, drum track.” “Thematically, it’s about a friendship and showing your friend the light when there seems none to be found.
