Art by renowned Chicago artist Jason Lazurus this limited edition CD/LP is part of an international touring performance art installation. Testimonium Songs collects the song cycle composed by Joan of Arc (Tim Kinsella, Bobby Burg, and Theo Katsaounis) to be performed live in Testimonium, a work of performance by well-respected experimental theater ensemble Every House Has a Door. Testimonium responds -- both in substance and in style --to Charles Reznikoff's monumental work Testimony, a translation into poetry of courtroom transcripts of witness and victim testimonies in criminal cases and cases of workplace negligence, in the US, spanning the years 1885 to 1915. Performances of Testimonium incorporate modern dance, theater, and original songs written and played by Joan of Arc. In a departure for the band, these highly structured compositions, developed over a two-year rehearsal period, emulate Reznikoff's poetics by shaping themselves according to a mosaic method - rotating a fixed set of musical units in warping permutations. The lyrics re-invent the strategies of Objectivist poetry, by turns surreal, ordinary, testimonial, and explosive, releasing the undercurrent of emotion in the poems while (almost) never quoting them directly. Beyond collecting the Testimonium Songs, the record has a life of its own, with the contributions of stellar musicians David Grubbs, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Michael Zerang, and Jim Baker, additional vocals by Melina Ausikaitis, and musical material not included in the performance. Anyone vaguely familiar with Kinsella's musical lineage (CAP'N JAZZ, AMERICAN FOOTBALL, OWLS) knows he's far from a one-note musician. And on new album, "L'Ami du Peuple", he expands his repertoire as a solo songwriter to include a touch of female vocals, pounding drums, and even dueling electric guitar lines. The variety of sounds featured on "L'Ami du Peuple" can largely be attributed to a new approach Kinsella took to the writing and recording process. Rather than locking himself in a room with mostly finished song ideas for a couple of weeks before emerging with a finished album, this time Kinsella involved producer Neil Strauch (IRON & WINE, BONNIE RINCE' BILLY, ANDREW BIRD) from the very beginning and spaced out recording over a few month period. This enabled him to naturally bring a different mood or vibe to the material he was working on every ime he entered the studio -- re-evaluating what had been recorded during the previous session and collaborating with Strauch on the direction new songs should take. The restless trend of changing gears dramatically continues on "Antenna to the Afterworld", which marks a total musical and narrative shift from last year's Longtime Companion (a country record that chronicled Smith's break up). On "Antenna to the Afterworld", Smith likens himself to a space being visiting Earth using wry humor, gritty poetry, and a myriad of musical lenses fleshed out by drummer Kelley Stoltz's Joy Division-like beats, Ryan Browne's new wavish basslines, and Tahlia Harbour's deadpan vocals. The murder of a close friend of the band led Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a psychic/medium brought Smith into contact with another friend who had died. This encounter with the afterworld inspired many of the lyrics on Sonny & the Sunsets' new record. And what a strangely entertaining odyssey it turned out to be. Style: Independent
