Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen is a guitar heroine for our times. Her molten, overdriven guitar sound is forged in the same fiery furnace as Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, then plunged into a steaming vat of free jazz in the Sonny Sharrock/Fred Frith mould. In tracks like "The Rex" and "Lake Acid", you'll hear the megalithic riffology of LED ZEPPELIN's "Kashmir" and "Rock'N'Roll", but with an agility and intensity peculiar to the dark Northern regions where she and her bandmates were raised. "All Of Them Witches" follows the previous 2011 Rune Grammofon release of HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO, "Shoot!", and like labelmates ELEPHANT9 and GRAND GENERAL, represent a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian avant rock/free metal energy. This latest batch of electrifying instrumentals was recorded live in the island environment of Ocean Sound studio, a grass-roofed wooden barn on the edge of the Norwegian Sea fitted with state of the art equipment, where HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO could swim in the freezing waters before breakfast and stretch their gaze out to the horizon in mid-take. It's no surprise that such widescreen surroundings should give rise to epic concepts, and the title of first track "Sing, Goddess" takes its name from the opening line of Homer's Iliad. Inspired by the wide open skies, "Shawshank" and "Ghrá Rúnda" are more reflective pieces, bathed in controlled feedback. "Innocence Is Kinky" - which also features a string section led by avant garde composer Ole-Henrik Moe - was produced in Bristol, England by PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, who helped bring out the intimate qualities of her lyrics and sharpened her improvisational tendencies. Like contemporaries such as Julia Holter and Laurel Halo, she's weaving spellbinding new forms of intelligent, experimental pop with injections from mythology, theory, gender politics and improvisation. Having played a handful sensational gigs as KENNETH KAPSTAD GROUP this impressive line-up is now ready with the more fitting name GRAND GENERAL for their debut album «Grand General». Ola Kvernberg plays violins and viola. His proper breakthrough came with the album "Liarbird" (2010) which won him a Norwegian Grammy and was received with wide acclaim both in Norway and abroad. Recently he is notably featured on MOTORPSYCHO's "The Death Defying Unicorn". A former member of blackjazzers SHINING Even Helte Hermansen is now the guitarist extraordinarie in powerjazztrio BUSHMAN'S REVENGE with four albums on Rune Grammofon. Keyboard player Erlend Slettevoll is yet another graduate from the Jazz Academy in Trondheim. He has worked with several of Norway's most accomplished jazz ensembles, most notably as a member of THE CORE and PETTER WETTRE QUARTET. Trond Frones is the bassist and also the main writer in GRAND GENERAL and known from bands like CADILLAC, EL DOOM & THE BORN ELECTRIC and lately doom metal trio SUNSWITCH. Kenneth Kapstad on drums is a permanent member of MOTORPSYCHO since the creative burst that started with their "Little Lucid Moments" album in 2008. He also plays in the extreme metal duo MONOLITHIC with Stian Westerhus, the death/trash metal band GOAT THE HEAD with Trond Frones and MOSTER! with Kjetil Moster (ULTRALYD) and Nikolai Eilertsen (ELEPHANT9). With a violinist on board it's difficult not to mention the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA when trying to place GRAND GENERAL in a musical perspective. Panzerpappa is maybe new to many Rune Grammofon followers but released their debut album "Passer Gullfisk" back in 2000. Since then they have released the albums "Hulemysteriet" (2002), "Farlig Vandring" (2004) and "Koralrevens Klagesang" (2006) by themselves. Already on their fine debut we hear a fully formed and very accomplished band, but the mark II line-up deliver stronger tunes, more focused ideas and better production. "Koralreven..." caught our attention enough to approach them regarding a possible collaboration, hence their brand new album "Astromalist". The history of Panzerpappa goes back to 1996 when founder Trond Gjellum recorded some demos in the vein of groups like Samla Mammas Manna and Univers Zero. Through various projects he connected with Steinar Borve before getting the band up and running in early 1998 with Knut Tore Abrahamsen and Jorgen Skjulstad complementing the line-up that would release the two first Panzerpappa albums. After this both Abrahamsen and Skjulstad left the band, but top replacements were soon found in Jarle Storlokken and Anders Krabberod, both of whom Gjellum met through playing in Richard Sinclair's (Caravan, Camel) backing band in 2002. Jarle is the cousin of Ståle Storlokken (Elephant9, Humcrush) and his musical background includes Dead Dino Storage, a band known for doing quite excellent cover versions of artists like Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant. Anders is a Van der Graaf fan but also mentions modernist composers such as Iannis Xenakis and Brian Ferneyhough as sources of inspiration. On their fourth album, counting the limited vinyl only "Live At The BBC", Elephant9 join forces with Reine Fiske, the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen, The Amazing and Träd, Gräs och Stenar, for yet another heavy slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz psychedelia. Reine Fiske makes his entrance on the title track, the long intro section almost sounding like it could have come off an early Terje Rypdal album. No coincident considering Fiske is a big Rypdal fan and Storlokken being Rypdal's keyboard player for well over a decade. His guest spot ends with the final thirteen minute tour de force and its heavy funk intro reminiscent of another guitar great and his Band of Gypsys. "Atlantis" is all originals, four from Storlokken and three from Eilertsen, recorded at Stockholm's legendary Atlantis studio under the masterful supervision of Janne Hansson and the band's regular engineer Christian Engfelt. Ståle Storlokken is widely considered to be the most inventive keyboard player from the fertile Norwegian jazz scene, his playing with bands like Supersilent, Humcrush, Motorpsycho, Terje Rypdal and countless others being firm testament to this.
