Look, sometimes these things just happen. Desert legends and Dutch heavy rockers sometimes get together on stage and it turns out better than anyone could've possibly imagined. So it was that guitarist/desert rock progenitor Gary Arce and drummer Bill Stinson of Yawning Man wound up playing with bassist Erik Harbers and guitarist Pieter Holkenborg at the Mañana Mañana Fest (which Erik and Pieter also organize) in the Netherlands in 2014. You can see videos of it on YouTube. Although the impromptu foursome had never played together before, the chemistry was there. The fluidity was there. As they jammed in and around Yawning Man songs, it was clear the union had a breadth that was only beginning to be explored. Two years later, Arce, Stinson, Harbers and Holkenborg have come together again, this time as a new incarnation of Arce's Ten East project. They proudly present their album, Skyline Pressure, through Small Stone as the next stage of their collaboration. Ten East was last heard from in with 2008's The Robot's Guide to Freedom, which was their second offering behind 2006's Extraterrestrial Highway. Between the two records, Arce's co-conspirators have included the likes of Bryan Giles (Red Fang), Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Fireball Ministry), Mario Lalli (Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson), Greg Ginn (Black Flag) and Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Fu Manchu). Harbers and Holkenborg earn their place in this illustrious company across the entire span of Skyline Pressure, from the sandy reaches of "Planet Blues" to the peaceful roll of the title-track, to the subdued sprawl of the 14-minute "Sonars and Myths." The album was recorded by Harper Hug at Thunder Underground and also features guitarist Nico Morcillo of French experimentalists Hifiklub on select tracks ("Planet Blues," "Tangled Forest," "Stalactite Dip"), but for anyone familiar with Arce's pioneering work in Yawning Man, his mark on Skyline Pressure is unmistakable. The stuff of tonal archetype. And while it started out as one of those things that just happened, the album has captured that spirit of improvisation and natural chemistry that emanated from the stage at Mañana Mañana Fest, and brought it to a lasting document that's all the more special for the spontaneity that lies at its heart. Italian outfit Isaak was born from the demise of Gandhi's Gunn, and immediately signed a worldwide deal with Small Stone Records. Their SSR debut was the critically acclaimed The Longer the Beard the Harder the Sound released back in 2013. On Feb. 6, 2016, they issued the follow-up, Sermonize, recorded by Mattia Cominotto at Greenfog in Genova with cover art by Richey Beckett. Isaak's brand of heavy rock blends the traditional guitar/bass/drum/vocal approach with their own special brew of crazy stoner impulses, inspired by the likes of Clutch, Orange Goblin, and Torche. Small Stone releases Sermonize on CD in partnership with Heavy Psych Sounds Records, who handled the 180g LP version. 500 copies - 180g, splattered vinyl (red/white) Snail formed in 1992 consisting of singer Mark Johnson (The Crucified, PASTE, Blessing the Hogs), bassist Matt Lynch and drummer Marty Dodson. The eponymous first album (Big Deal Records) garnered much praise in the press, and gained a loyal following from peers, leading to the DIY, 4-track cassetterecorded All Channels are Open EP, after which Snail sadly succumbed to the "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" lifestyle and eroded to the point of breaking up. After 15 years' absence, Snail reunited in 2008 with longtime friend and guitarist Eric Clausen as a fourth member, and unleashed Blood (Meteor City), which was among the highest-rated heavy rock records of 2009, combining fuzzy guitars and a pummeling rhythm section with layered, soaring melodies rarely heard in the genre. In a time of industry turmoil, the record went from blood-red to "in the black," even attracting the attention of underground music legend Henry Rollins, who gave it multiple plays on his "Fanatics" radio show on influential Los Angeles station KCRW. Snail's 2012 follow-up, Terminus, showcased all fresh material, infused with the enthusiasm of newly-minted collaboration. Influences that were not evident in past works came to the fore, steeped in old-school metal and psychedelia. The subject matter was noticeably more mature, delving into the themes of mortality and its implications in our modern world. From crushing doom to head-bobbing Camaro rock and hypnotic psych, Terminus was Snail's most varied work to date; but most importantly, it rocked. With the challenge of a "first new album" behind them, Snail set to work on Feral, their fourth full-length and first for Small Stone. Taking the varied approach of Terminus to new degrees of psychedelia and sonic heft, songs like "Smoke the Deathless" and "Thou Art That" epitomize the weighted melodic appeal of the band, while closer "Come Home" steps forward in its brazen emotionalism. Get a group of musicians who have a shared love of certain bands and who can get along with each other for at least an hour. Hell, sometimes they don't even have to be musicians (especially if you're looking at the Top 40 charts). But in reality, it's a lot tougher, as the essential ingredient? What makes the group truly unique and memorable - is something that can't be defined, learned, or bought. Call it talent, magic, or whatever you want, but Greenleaf's got it. A super group of the underground rock scene, the band was formed sometime in late 1999/early 2000 by guitarist Tommi Holappa (Dozer), drummer Daniel Liden (Demon Cleaner and the drummer on DOZER's "Through the Eyes of Heathens," and currently in AND The Machine Said Behold!), and engineer/ bassist Bengt Bäcke. Forcefully ascending from the depths of Paris rock underground, it only took ABRAHMA one album to emerge as one of the torchbearers of French heavy rock on the international scene. Released in late 2012 on renowned North American label Small Stone Records, Through the Dusty Paths of Our Lives unveiled an incredibly mature songwriting, while showcasing the band's sombre and complex music realm. Like the main thread of this heavy odyssey peppered with Hindu mysticism and voodoo convolutions, the sound is hulking and hypnotic, while vocals resound like a distant and irresistible incantation; an appeal that is amped-up by guest appearances from the likes of Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet) and Thomas Bellier (Blaak Heat Shujaa, Spindrift). What makes the group truly unique and memorable - is something that can't be defined, learned, or bought. Call it talent, magic, or whatever you want, but Greenleaf's got it. Asuper group of the stoner rock scene, the band was formed sometime in late 1999/early 2000 by guitarist Tommi Holappa (Dozer), drummer Daniel Liden (Demon Cleaner and the drummer on Dozer's "Through the Eyes of Heathens," and currently in AND The Machine Said Behold!, and engineer/ bassist Bengt Bäcke. Featuring a revolving cast of fellow musicians who share a love of heavy fuzz rock, including Fredrik Nordin (Dozer), Daniel Jansson (Stonewall Noise Orchestra), and Peder Bergstrand (Lowrider), Greenleaf has consistently defined what rock'n'roll was, is, and should be. You put 2001's "Revolution Rock" and 2003's "Secret Alphabets" on and you're going to have a hard time taking them off. The band cooks, because they've got that special ingredient. It's time to rejoice, because Greenleaf is back with "Agents of Ahriman." Like their past releases, "Agents" is a righteous kick in the ass and a testament to the almighty riff.
