The initial reaction to the release of this album was unbelievably one of controversy. Irving Berlin was actually horrified that his "White Christmas" was being sullied by the 'vulgar kid with the gyrating pelvis,' and many others agreed. The year was 1957 and Elvis was still young (just 22) and dangerous, Jailhouse Rock had just hit the box offices and his "Hound Dog / Don't Be Cruel" single was still at the top of the charts. But despite his status as the ultimate rebel, Elvis actually managed to deliver pretty convincing versions of these Christmas classics, so much so that although Irving Berlin may still be rolling over in his grave, the album itself has taken its place as one of the best known and loved Christmas albums of all time. PEACH KELLI POP began as an experiment for Allie Hanlon - a way for the drummer to step out from behind her kit and try writing songs. In case you dont know, she's the drummer for WHITE WIRES who have two albums out on Going Gaga / Douchemaster and Dirtnap, toured through Europe and USA. Allie Hanlon always had her own musical outlet, since 2009, her music has gone from the Ottawa basements and bedrooms where it spawned, to all corners of Canada and the USA. She has toured under the PEACH KELLI POP moniker the USA multiple times with various friends completing her live band. Hanlon's output is slow - 3 years after the first self-titled album - her second, also self-titled, is finally due out on Austria's Bachelor records. This time round you can hear a distinct improvement in production quality. Both albums were written, performed and recorded entirely by Hanlon, and it is clear she has learned a thing or two since her genuinely amateur debut. The second album is a sort of continuation of the last - songs about love, loss, fun, still laced with the same sass and femininity, but with significantly faster tempos and a welcome dash of distortion. The 10 track album features a diverse range of instruments and is very concise, lasting under 25 minutes. Quick songs with driving 4/4 beats, harmonies and pop melodies for miles. German electronic producer and musician Pantha du Prince (Hendrik Weber) has collaborated with Norwegian musicians The Bell Laboratory for the project ‘Elements Of Light’. The album is a single continuous work, although it has been broken down into five tracks named for elements of light: “Wave,” “Particle,” Photon,” “Spectral Split” and “Quantum.” Sonically, the work is a fusion of electronic music and classical composition, and draws on house and minimalism, jazz and new music, gamelan and western sacred music. Influences include John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Steve Reich, LaMonte Young and Moondog. Elements of Light is a natural next step in the Pantha Du Prince oeuvre. Bells figured prominently on his last album, the highly acclaimed Black Noise, which Rough Trade Records released in 2010. In a Best New Music review of Black Noise, Pitchfork said, “each track is its own micro sound world with enough rich detail to draw you back for deeper investigation.” Elements of Light live performances are being planned for late 2013. Here, documentary-moviemaker Jörg Adolph and his cameraman Luigi Falorni have created "Kanalschwimmer", and 'solo swim' is the Notwist soundtrack to their story of the mystic 33 kilometres from Dover to Calais, the Mount Everest for long distance swimmers. Shimmering hazed guitars, electronics and more than a whisper from the inescapable influence of Nick Drake. The quite beautiful vocal morphs into a 'solo swim dub', i guess mirroring the physical and mental walls faced by the swimmer - the feeling is isolated, tactile, and otherworldly when an almighty twisted beat drops - stunning stuff. Console's 'Mount Everest Horizontal' is another unreleased gem - deep sea aquatics literally, with a lapping dusky break and remorseless continuous bass presence - another winner. Klimek was reputedly a huge influence on the Notwist's creation, so his nigh-on ten minute remix 'Expo-Park, Sevilla (Parts I-V)' restates the daunting top-side in an other worldly, inspired fashion. Huge piece of music, don't hang around as Notwist's equally immense 'Lichter' was out of print almost immediately after release last year. Not to be missed. Although this LP did not appear until 1961 on the Chess label, the songs found within are actually much older. The earliest songs-"Mad Man Blues" and "Hey Boogie" (aka "Boogie Now")-were recorded in 1950 for the tiny Gone label, while the remaining tracks come from two sessions recorded in Detroit in March 1951 and April 1952 for Chess. Here John Lee Hooker was still in the very early stages of his career, with his first single, "Boogie Chillen", having only been released a few years prior.
