Dan Lopatin and Joel Ford’s Software Recording Co. present a full-length album from Matt Papich, the follow up to his noted 2011 NNA Tapes side Daydream Repeater. Made in the kitchen of his Baltimore home, with assistance from Joe Williams on programming and synths, it builds on the bubblegum psychedelia of its predecessor to arrive at a dense, sample-happy and expressionistic electronic sound that is 2013 to a tee, yet resists easy pigeonholing. It’s also largely beat-driven, whether it's plasmic dancehall (‘Melter’s Delight’), colliding the bamboo ambience of Ryuichi Sakamoto with clucking footwork drums ('Sukiyaki To Die For'), or subjecting Neil Sedaka doo-wop vocals to leftfield ghetto-tech cut-ups (‘Dead Christian’). ‘Un’’s jazz horns and reverbed percussion hits put us in mind of a more high-fidelity Samiyam or Hud Mo at his most introspective, and we’re taken further into avant-R&B abstraction on ‘Sympathy Flinch’;
meanwhile ‘Suspicion’ (a dubbed-out, spring-loaded reinterpretation of Psychic TV’s classic of the same name) and the crepuscular boogie lament ‘Make It Slay’ are clear highlights.
