Average producers take rhythms straight off the shelf. GEIOM takes their prefabricated units apart and builds improbable machines, capable of transforming, interlocking and changing speed. The second striking feature of his music is the signature melodic style, a strange, sweet and sour tonality that cant be mistaken for the work of anyone else. Already he has released nearly 20 12"s with unique strains of dubstep, UK garage, house, funky and drum n bass running through them, interwoven with a fabric of microtones and strange harmonics. Black Screen is his third album, and also the very first long form release on Frijsfo Beats. 2007s Island Noise was a ticket into the dubstep scene, where his tracks appeared on the Skull Disco and Deep Medi labels and the Dubstep Allstars mix CDs. But before that was 2001s Sellotape Flowers, a freeform collection of electronica for Neo Ouija (a label which Metamatics, Xela and Apparat have also called home). On Black Screen this whole history comes together - but the album certainly doesnt showcase Geioms repertoire in a museum-like sense. Instead its a fertile cross-pollination of his works many different facets, fully combining for the first time. Black Screen stands out in a crowded field. In the past, all Frijsfo Beats releases have had a lot of support from excellent DJs, but never so much and with such anticipation as with Geiom's lesprin' EP. This year Ben UFO, Sully, Beneath, The Black Dog, Brackles, Midland, Spatial, Al Tourettes, Hackman, Happa, West Norwood Cassette Library and of course Geiom have all played tracks from the EP. On 12th November Frijsfo release 'Black Screen', Geiom's first album in half a decade, but as that's a CD only outing, and favouring vinyl over all other formats for DJing, the label had to commit tracks to wax too. 'Glesprin' contains three tunes specially selected for mixing in the club, none of which are included on 'Black Screen'. As much of a cliché as it sounds, the title track is a guaranteed floor filler. Over nearly seven minutes it builds unstoppable momentum, driven by constantly mutating percussion and a bubbling, evolving bassline. The title 'Ferrite Gaps' is a clue about the involvement of magnetic tape in these tracks. During production, parts and sounds were bounced to and from cassette. Each track was also bounced down to a classic analogue two track machine by Matt Colton at Air Studios as part of the mastering process. Needless to say it all sounds amazingly warm and distinctive - partly because of this attention to sonic detail, partly just because it's a Geiom record. 'Digitithe' is a collaboration with Hizatron, a Nottingham resident like Geiom. His recent 'Discharge' EP with Bashley (on Wigflex) has deservedly turned heads much further afield than Nottingham's thriving techno scene, with Sonic Router, The Quietus and XLR8R all singing his praises.
