"The initial idea for "Zero Triptych" goes back almost three years, when we first became aware of the Group Zero art movement. Not only did I think it was the best name for a group of artists I'd ever heard, but their ideas, outlook and, most importantly, work struck a chord with me, which I then shared with the band. We've been inspired ever since. Not quite a conventional song, nor EP, we knew about a year and a half ago that this piece of music was evolving into something not conventionally defined in the classic rock/pop vernacular. It's essentially three different sections intertwined, hence the triptych. I don't think this is something we'd have ordinarily tried were it not for the confidence we gained from touring a new line-up around Europe, when we learned to be a new band - that was probably our zero moment. While "Zero Triptych" is our ode to the masters of light and shade - Mack, Piene and Uecker aka the Group Zero - it also had a very functional role for us: it effectively cleared our path, zeroed out what had come before and reset the dials. For fans of: The Horrors, These New Puritans, The Cure, Savages, Deerhunter, Toy, Ice Age, Fire Engines, Wire. Girls Names formed in Belfast, but they've long considered themselves a European band. Their last album, "The New Life", was an unexpected worldwide underground hit in early 2013, culminating in nominations for both the Northern Irish and Irish Music Prizes. Emboldened by the reception to that record, they returned with an 11-minute single. Typically, it does not feature on their new album. Girls Names like to do things a little differently. On "Arms Around a Vision", they're more widescreen than ever but also more direct and aggressive. The bass, drums and guitars are still there, but so are saxophones, organs, detuned broken guitars and pianos, and even sheets of metal assaulted with hammers. Conceptually, Arms Around a Vision acts as a love letter to European elegance - Italian futurism, Russian constructivism, Germany's Zero Group and both Neubauten and Bowie's Berlin. Love and pain, romance and fucking. It's all in there somewhere. An album that treads a course between Eno-era Roxy sleaze, Birthday Party dissonance and M.E.S' three R's: repetition, repetition, repetition. While the songs aren't narrative-driven as such - the band still generally favour abstraction and ambiguity - there is a consistent underlying message: "We've got nothing. We've never had anything. Having released their debut album last year, GIRLS NAMES make a welcome return with the track, "A Troubled See", and it provides the first proper indication of where the band will be heading with their next full length, out later this year. Hinting at a shift away from their often mis-perceived surf and indie-pop roots, GIRLS NAMES more towards something more akin to Krautrock and Psychedelia, WEIRD DREAMS contribution to the split is their first new material since the just released debut album, "Choreography". Their longest track to date - an almost perverse endeavour given the format it features on - "House of Secrets" is a slow-burning, sinister lullaby, buoyed by an insistent and spidery guitar line and replete with the rich, languorous vocals characteristic of the band. New single The New Life clocks in at over 7 minutes and takes you on a journey that mirrors the feelings of a band living and working in economy stricken Northern Ireland - the perfect soundtrack of the bleakness to where they exist. The B-side on the 12" is a J D Twitch Optimo remix of the single. This year the band expanded to a four-piece and has spent the last six months in virtual seclusion honing and developing a more progressive and expansive sound, feeding on the darker sides of Echo and The Bunnymen, Spacemen 3, The Birthday Party and David Bowies Low before heading off on a triumphant Spring/Summer European tour culminating on their biggest and most successful shows to date at the prestigious Primavera sound festival in Barcelona. A new full length is currently being finished off but for now it seems Girls Names are intent on making a lasting impression with single The New Life. Their second album "The New Life" is the sound of a band on the fringes striving to forge their own path, purposefully out of step - and time - with their surroundings. Weighed heavy with the grey landscapes of their hometown, "The New Life" is isolation laid bare, shot through with an undeterred sense of purpose and individuality. Having released a series of singles and EPs on various independent labels, GIRLS NAMES made their first significant impression on the wider world in 2011 with their debut album, "Dead To Me". As soon as that record was released Girls Names were already moving into a different headspace. The band's performance at the 2012 Primavera festival provided them with their first real opportunity to showcase the songs that were to comprise "The New Life". The sunshine backdrop of the Spanish coastline offered a somewhat incongruous setting to the eerie dissonance of the new material, a kind of trial by fire metamorphosis rapturously received. Following a tour of Europe, the band returned home to record the album over a series of months. Having been produced by singer and songwriter, Cathal Cully, they've managed to capture that sense of otherness the performances at Primavera hinted at. The expansion to a four piece means the garage-clatter of the spritely pop songs of their debut have been replaced by a deeper, shadowy exercise in catharsis, driven by repetition, psychedelia and Dionysian crisis. The album's title track, and the first single to be taken from the album is 8 minutes long and rotates around a hypnotic bass line, and in Cully's evocation of renaissance, offers a perfect metaphor for the album as a whole. The second single "Hypnotic Regression" reflects another side to the record. The reverb-heavy guitars and compelling melody are immediately memorable, but there are signs of experimentation, too; the white squall of the lead break; the uneasiness in the vocal echoes that furnish the verses.
