When THE HIRSCH EFFEKT released their debut album ,Holon: Hiberno" two years ago via Midsummer Records, the impact it left on the German music scene was significant. All across online message boards fans and critics of the band accused each other of bad or lacking taste respectively, and even dedicated music journalists were torn between celebrating the album and helplessly scratching their heads. Seemingly out of the blue they were hit by an album so uniquely blending unsettling, dissonant guitars with strings and wind sections, chamber choirs and beautiful, cryptic lyrics with untamed drums and a singer screaming his head off, that there was just no middle ground left: You either loved or loathed ,Holon: Hiberno". Two years and almost one hundred shows later the question the Hanoverian band had to face was: How do you write the follow-up to a debut album that was described as a ,masterpiece" in more than just a few places, and that made its way into the hearts and minds of an ever growing fanbase? THE HIRSCH EFFEKT chose to lay low, focus, and rebuild. In a vacation home in the middle of nowhere they started writing songs about loneliness, helplessness, and the fear of abandonment, thereby laying the foundation for ,Holon: Anamnesis". While ,Holon: Hiberno" already had its recurrent themes, its successor is substantially and deliberately build around a leitmotif that runs like a thread through the lyrics, the music, and the artwork. Musically, everything seems to be bigger than before. More than a dozen guest musicians participated in the making of ,Holon: Anamnesis". Recordings took place in several studios as well as in theaters and churches. ,Holon: Anamnesis" is more extreme, more disturbing, more fragile, more metal, and more pop than its predecessor, and at times it manages to be all of the above at the same time. However, with all the exciting stories to tell about the creation of this album, the most important aspect is that THE HIRSCH EFFEKT managed to produce yet another incredibly honest, emotionally moving work of art. Granted: Some will once again misinterpret virtuosity as swaggering, or turn away irritated by the experimental structures and extraordinary arrangements. That is to be expected, and the band is probably okay with not being everybody's darling.
