Strut present the first ever compilation bringing together classics and rarities from the seminal spiritual jazz and conscious soul label Black Fire, covering 1975 to 1993. Formed by DJ and record producer Jimmy Gray in Richmond, Virginia, and following in the footsteps of other influential black-owned independent labels like Strata-East and Tribe, the foundation of Black Fire coincided with saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch returning to the city from New York to form Oneness Of Juju. The band’s ‘African Rhythms’ album in 1975 was the perfect fusion of jazz, deep African polyrhythms and empowering lyrics and bassist Muzi Branch, a trained artist, created the first of many Black Fire handillustrated sleeves for the label’s debut release. The album set the tone for a series of landmark releases on the label including Oneness Of Juju’s ‘Space Jungle Luv’ (1976) and debuts from soulman Wayne Davis (1976) and early go-go pioneers Experience Unlimited (1977). Gray continued to use his influence and strong A&R instincts to bring in more key artists – great jazz players like Byard Lancaster and Hamiet Bluiett, Ghanaian master percussionist Okyerema Asante and collectives including Southern Energy Ensemble and music / drama troupe Theatre West. Due to personal and cashflow issues, many releases had to be canned and only later surfaced on CD during the early ‘90s ‘Soul Love Now’ brings together some of the many highlights from the label onto one essential compilation. Opening with Theatre West’s powerful soul message ‘Children of Tomorrow’s Dreams’, the tracks include a Byard Lancaster recording with Tunde Kuboye’s Drummers Of Ibadan in Nigeria and Lon Moshe’s driving jazz dance classic ‘Doin’ The Carvin’ For Thabo’. Wayne Davis brings the explosive gospel rare groove ‘Look At The People’ while Plunky’s JuJu and Oneness Of Juju feature with three tracks spanning their career, including a storming previously unreleased version of the classic ‘African Rhythms’ recorded in DC in 1975.

Good day! Two years ago we proudly released part 1 of our compilation "Sowas von egal". The fun we had while doing so and the positive feedback we got throughout led us to the decision to release a second part. Very fitting that the term NDW recently celebrated its 40th birthday and gave us yet another reason to tackle an ambitious sampler sequel. Once again, the focus was on the common passion of Bureau B - the aficionado label from Hamburg - and our party series Damaged Goods for rare, obscure and absolutely worth listening to synth & wave records from the German underground of the early 80s. It was clear that "Sowas von egal 2" should not be an unloving follow-up, but should consist of sought-after and danceable pieces and of course also meet our self-imposed demands of part 1. Unlike part 1, the majority of the acts were only musically active in the early 80s and haven't released any records since. Especially the tape artists* were driven by a DIY spirit, which is reflected in the - partly - brittle sound aesthetics and the unbridled energy until today and often probably had little or no focus on commercial exploitation and sale of their own art. As a Cool Cat Club, they make the dance floors in and around Hamburg unsafe and are also the organizers of the annual Hitch-Hike Weekender. 32 tracks with pretty strict 50s Rhythm & Blues - hits and rarities mixed together in a colourful way. Since 1990 Crille has been playing records around the Reeperbahn, with the Komet Bar being his residence, where these 32 Exotica/Rhythm & Blues were constantly tested on the dancefloor. Maybe the best and most coherent volume of the series.

Reissue of the 5th installment of the hugely popular 'Now That's What I Call Music' series. Now 5 was originally released in August 1985 and it kicks off with Duran Duran‘s Bond theme, ‘A View To A Kill’, although it doesn’t feature the song that kept Duran off number one in the UK singles charts which was Paul Hardcastle‘s ’19’. What it does include is the Rory Bremner-led spoof version of that song, ‘N-n-nineteen Not Out’, which was credited to ‘The Commentators’. It later turned out that Hardcastle actually helped them put this together but was under strict orders to keep it a secret. Johnson’s productions Features some of the biggest Jamaican hits from 1968 to 1972By the close of the Sixties, record retailer and jukebox businessman Karl ‘J.J.’ Johnson was firmly established as one of Jamaica’s leading record producers, having released a string of best-selling rock steady and proto-reggae 45s by such noted local acts as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, the Rulers, Carl Dawkins, the Kingstonians and the Ethiopians.Early in 1969, a lucrative agreement with British record label, Trojan, emboldened the ambitious entrepreneur to release an album comprising a dozen of his latest recordings in the new reggae style. Entitled “Reggae Power”, the LP was dominated by regular hit-makers, the Ethiopians, whose recent singles had proved so popular in Britain that the group had been prompted to make a promotional tour of the country. Their trip led to Trojan dramatically reworking the ‘Reggae Power’ long-player for its UK release, replacing all but two non-Ethiopians tracks with further J.J.-produced works by the trio, before issuing it in new artwork.But with the Ethiopians collection already available on the Doctor Bird CD, “Reggae Power & Woman Capture Man”, it is the Jamaican version of the album that provides the inspiration for this exciting double-disc compilation, which collects the bulk of J.J. Johnson’s output from 1968 to 1972, including numerous reggae hits and 17 recordings new to CD

Originally released by Creole Records in 1978, “Roots, Rock Reggae” primarily served as a showcase vehicle for the most recent productions of Phil Mathias and his Big Phil label. Comprising 14 tracks of the highest quality, the album featured some of Jamaica’s leading talent, notably the In Crowd, Cornel Campbell, Sugar Minott, Delroy Wilson and Leroy Smart.
