Ever since the late 1950s bossa-nova revolution, Brazil's influence on French music has been undeniable. Pierre Barouh, Georges Moustaki and a vast array of lesser known artists, all made the Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) an axis of promotion at the service of a cool and metaphysical, modern and mixed Brazilian lifestyle. Some were seduced by the poetic languors of the bossa, some were looking for fun, and others just loved the American hybridization of jazz-bossa, jazz-samba. What is bossa nova? One of its creators, Joao Gilberto said: "Its style, cadence, everything is samba. At the very start, we didn't call it bossa nova, we sang a little samba made up of a single note - Samba de uma nota so .... The discussion around the origins of bossa nova is therefore useless". It is nevertheless useful to remember that these magnificent Brazilian songs, which the guitarist describes as samba, were shifted and balanced around improbable chords. "I like things that lean, the in-betweens that limp with grace," said Pierre Barrouh, quoting Jean Cocteau. With emotion, arrangements for violin and supple guitar licks, bossa nova rapidly changed. A transformation that can be heard in the Tchic, tchic, French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 compilation, the result of a cultural reappropriation, which traveled through the United States and supplemented itself in France. A musical revolution that has remained significant, bossa nova was born in Rio. From 1956 to 1961, Brazil lived through its golden years.

A long awaited 6 CD clam shell box covering the first six volumes in the seminal Oi! Compilation series which features 68 artists across 121 tracks. Initially launched in 1980 by ‘Sounds’ journalist Garry Bushell, “Oi! The Album” contained tracks from the likes of Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, The Exploited, The 4 Skins, Cock Sparrer, Slaughter & The Dogs and Peter & The Test Tube Babies. 1981’s “Strength Thru Oi!” featured the likes of Toy Dolls, Infa Riot, Cock Sparrer, Last Resort and ‘newer’ bands like The Strike and Criminal Class as well as the Oi! poet Garry Johnson.“Carry On Oi!!” hit No.4 in the Independent Chart and ‘introduced’ the likes of The Business, The Partisans, Blitz, Red Alert and The Ejected alongside ‘veterans’ such as The 4 Skins and Infa Riot. Disc 4 is 1982’s “Oi! Oi! That’s Yer Lot”. Reggae legend Judge Dread along with ‘one man Chas ‘N’ Dave’ Frankie Flame and established Oi! acts such as The Business and The Oppressed. Added to the disc are five tracks originally recorded at the session for the LP but later released on the ‘Back On The Streets’ EP. “Son Of Oi!” is what you will find on Disc 5. An Indie Chart No.11, it featured stalwarts like The 4 Skins, Angelic Upstarts, Cock Sparrer, The Business and The Gonads as well as introducing ‘newer’ acts such as Vicious Rumours, Prole and Maniac Youth. The final disc is 1984’s “Oi! Of Sex” which reached No.11 in the Indie Chart. Again a mixture of the established – Cock Sparrer, Gonads – and the new – The Burial, ABH and Rat Patrol. Helsinki's We Jazz Records presents "Ateneum 2019", part 2 of their ongoing "We Jazz Live Plates" series documenting the label's live activity. Recorded at the historic Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki during spring 2019, the intense live compilation brings together three acts on the label's roster: Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen, OK:KO and Alder Ego, each performing two tracks here. OK:KO opens proceedings with their sound electrified by Toomas Keski-Säntti changing from piano to Fender rhodes, a little touch that opens up new avenues in their sound. The band who made a big splash with their 2019 debut album "Syrtti", present energetic new versions of the title track and the looping "Piik". Alder Ego, led by drummer Joonas Leppänen, shifts gears with a new deep version of their 2018 album track "Cubism", and add a new track "Mystery Room Nr. 6" into the mix. Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen strecth out their compact tracks "Fallow" and "Goldenrod", which grow into new lenght and depth in the live setting. We’ve dug into the archive and decided to bring you Bonzai Power Vinyl 1 on 2 x 7” records containing four classic cuts that put the hardcore rave sound on the map. DJ Bountyhunter’s Demilitarized Zone first appeared on Power Vinyl and was an exclusive at the time. Featuring thumping beats and sweeping hoover sounds, the main melody and the vocals were inspired by the popular TV show, The Twilight Zone. Up next we will have the superb Reality from Phrenetic System aka Peter Schiettekatte and Frederico Santini. Hailed as one of the very best in our back catalogue, Reality hit hard and true, sending clubbers into a frenzy. A gentle melodic note opens the track before a robotic voice comes through. Powerful beats take over as gritty synths and basses rock the speakers. Karim Boux and Roel Reynders’ project, Belgica Wave, gave us The Wave which caused quite a stir upon release. The track opens with a Gregorian style vox with a crowd ready for action. After a short prayer, the hoovers start and the track lifts off, catapulting us into the stratosphere. Peter and Frederico’s Final Analyzis - El Punto Final (Petrofinal Mix) rounds up this fantastic four track EP. With a soft melodic opening sequence, the track soon brings forth the hardcore vibe as scathing, erratic rave synths weave intricate patterns to the backdrop of that now famous vocal. These four tracks are the epitome of the sound of the time and now you can savour the moments on fresh new vinyl.
