With No 2, Sammal releases the follow-up to their critically acclaimed eponymous debut through Svart Records. The present-day flagship of Finnish progressive rock sails back in time again to the authentic tones and warm soundscapes of the 1970s on their forthcoming EP, titled No 2. The band doesn't show off with unnecessarily technical playing or super-hard song structures, but focuses on forging upbeat atmospheres with strong melodies and fresh vintage sounds. Sammal relies on live playing in the studio, which brings the listener closer to the band: the production breathes so carefree that you can almost touch the notes floating in the air. No 2 is not a companion piece to the debut, nor is it a preview of the second full-length, which will be released via Svart Records next winter. It is a mini-album, which stands on its own. Sammal wanted to clear their closet from older gems, and prepare for a new era with this release. Three of the five songs featured on the EP are old demo songs, which were re-recorded at the same session with a new track "Vankina varisten" and a cover of Aphrodite's Child's "Magic Mirror," translated as "Peilin taikaa," in the summer of 2013. Sammal was founded in 2004 by guitarist Jura Salmi and vocalist Jan- Erik Kiviniemi. Sammal's eponymous debut was voted as the 9th best Finnish album of 2013 by the critics of Rumba, a renowned Finnish rock and pop magazine. The second vinyl pressing of the album will be released on the same day as the EP, February 14th. No 2 will be released on LP, CD and as a digital download Style: Metal

Gatefold jacket, Green Vinyl Sammal is that good old friend you've never met. Free from the confines of a scene or part of any genre wave, like the wild moss their name translates to. They have conjured a rare album, quite of its own but nostalgic in only the best way. A band that manages to capture a sense of golden moments in Finnish music, naturally and without pretensions. Vocals that soar confidently and warmly with beautiful lyrics which, though sung entirely in Finnish, are entirely relatable due to the passion in the voice and beauty of the compositions, made more arcane by the sentiments the sound evokes. Lyrics translated inside the booklet are a magic discovery of a band that inspires more about their culture and heart than most well known Finnish bands today. Touching on these deep themes, rarely does a voice emote and sound so ubiquitous or wiser in modern rock. Through their riffs, solos and vintage keys, you can find traces of everything that made Love Records and Finnish Prog so beloved, not only in their home country but abroad. Sammal give the same impression of a band Finns can be proud of, while doing a great service to their musical culture and heritage. They have a masterful natural command of classic rock music that surpasses their age with nods to Thin Lizzy, Camel, Birth Control, Budgie and the epic guitar journeys of the Allman Brothers, while all along carving their own unique path. Torchbearers of Finnish progressive rock Sammal return with a new single on March 27th and a second album, to be released on May 15th via Svart Records. The eponymous debut album of these Finns, who sing in their native language, garnered widespread praise: Classic Rock called Sammal "an impressive, obsessive rendering of 45-year-old dynamics across a set of beguiling and timeless rock melodies" while Decibel called them "a rare prog band that knows when to say when." Last winter, Sammal entered the studio and laid down nine new tracks for their second album, Myrskyvaroitus ("Storm Warning"). Whereas the self-titled debut and the band's other early work had mostly been the work of two people - singer Janu Kiviniemi and guitarist Jura Salmi - with last year's EP release No 2, Sammal closed the doors on its past. Myrskyvaroitus is very much an ensemble album, and the band worked on the material as a tight-knit unit. The album was mixed and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Messenger, Hexvessel, Paradise Lost, Ulver) in London. Says guitarist Salmi, "We decided to get rid of the comparisons to Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep and be just Sammal. As leading influences in the rehearsal room and studio, we had Vangelis, Moody Blues, Scandinavian jazz, and early Turkish progressive psychedelic rock. We are ready for our second coming.
