|Москвич Александр Чайковский (род. 1946) - племянник Бориса Чайковского, но не родственник Петру Ильичу - является одним из самых уважаемых композиторов, работающих сегодня в России, и все же его музыка мало известна западной публике. Его симфонический стиль чем-то обязан стилю его дяди: он также терпеливо развивает огромную власть над обширными звуковыми пространствами, хотя есть место и для мягких ироничных ноток ностальгии - возможно, унаследованных от учителя его дяди Шостаковича. Монументальная Третья симфония (1995–2002), записанная для огромного оркестра, пронизана танцевальными ритмами: в ней использован материал из заброшенного балета по мотивам оперы Достоевского «Дьяволы». Седьмая симфония - это во многом произведение de nos jours: Чайковский сочинил ее во время пандемии Covid-19, поставил ее для социально дистанцированного оркестра струнных, перкуссии и фортепиано - и в этот момент, как он пишет, «вирус взял реванш». ', и сам заболел. Смысл произведения ясен, поскольку суматоха первого движения уступает место посланию надежды во втором.

Weinberg’s Symphony No. 13, dedicated to the memory of his mother, is cast in a single movement that unfolds in a symmetrical arc. A large orchestra is used sparingly in chamber-like textures with motivic ideas that evolve over the course of the work. The result is music of gripping and unsettling power, both emotionally intense and architecturally complex. Some years earlier Weinberg wrote the light-hearted Serenade, Op. 47, No. 4 which offers a study in contrasts: by turn capricious, rumbustious and wistful.

WERGO is proud to present another recording by Enjott Schneider. In 'Clair Obscur Colors of Saxophones', extreme contrasts play a defining role: beautiful and ugly, loud and soft, bright and dark all these qualities are brought to life by the Berlin saxophone quartet, clair-obscur. The musical spectrum ranges from Old Masters to the extreme fringes of contemporary music. Cri Muet for saxophone and orchestra brings together tender lyricism and machine-like rhythms, along with Beethoven quotations and contemporary atonal harmonies. As Times Go Bye for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone plays with the concept of time using motivic material from Johann Sebastian Bach. In Pavane, old and new meet in the contrasting sounds of saxophone and English Horn as well as in references to the music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luis de Milán. In Berlin Punk, Enjott Schneider attempts to transpose the attitude and character of Punk culture into a symphonic setting. Rough, loud, dirty, insolent, and aggressive, yet also lyrical, poetic, and yearning: this is the impressive emotional range that is radically achieved in the virtuoso performances by the members of clair-obscur.

The name of the Austrian composer Julius Bittner (1874–1939) has been almost entirely lost from view, and yet he was one of the most successful composers of opera and operetta of his day, a mainstay of musical Vienna. Unusually, Bittner was also a practicing lawyer; more unusually still, he was a double amputee, the result of the ravages of diabetes. None of his orchestral music has been recorded before – astonishingly, given the quality of the two works presented here. Vaterland is an expansive, Lisztian symphonic poem written on a patriotic impulse early in the First World War; and Bittner’s ambitious First Symphony, which has its starting point in Brahms and Bruckner, is a major piece of late-Romantic musical architecture, both tuneful and grandiose.
