Autotelia – as originally coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi – describes a process by which someone has a purpose in, rather than outside of themselves. Those who are autotelic depend less on external rewards for their satisfaction, being driven instead simply by purpose or curiosity. Such an ethos was the genesis of a new project put together by Tomaga’s Tom Relleen and The Oscillation’s Demian Castellanos. Autotelia’s sound – as chronicled on their debut release for Rocket Recordings – evolved purely of its own volition, as its makers were happy to allow their own chemistry and interplay to take their distinct course. This zen-like simplicity of approach has been more than rewarded, as the impulses and intentions blossomed into meditative extrapolations both sonically rich and spiritually bewitching. Although some observers may able to detect parallels with the blissful drift of Cluster’s ‘II’, the glowing ampstacks of Spacemen 3’s ‘Dreamweapon’ or the becalmed modernism of late ‘70s Eno in these radiant trance states, the core sound of Autotelia remains in splendid isolation, an incandescent and unearthly tapestry of echoes and vibrations channeled direct from the id and the ether, yet one that maps out a voyage sonically between vintage memories and future epiphanies.”These tracks are pure escapism – zoning out and not worrying about anything” reckons Tom. “I think that when playing music for a completely new project it can be really liberating since there is no expectation and no baggage associated with that you might have already released. The second offering by Julie Carpenter's textural orchestral entity Less Bells takes its title from a storied strain of decorative objects worn in remembrance of lost loved ones: Mourning Jewelry. The album shares a similar mood of devotional pageantry, stirring ornamental laments born from a need to "create beauty out of grief." Utilising an amalgam of strings, synthesisers, and choirs, the pieces ascend and descend in grand, glimmering arcs, ebbing from passages of "baroque complexity" to expanses of haunting emptiness. Certain songs also skew more overtly western than ever before, deeply reverbed plucks of banjo refracted against glowing horizons of sunrise drone: Americana gone ambient. Furthering the music's mystic intentionality, the track titles comprise "the major arcana of a tarot deck from an alternate universe," lorded over by the "Queen Of Crickets," ruler of "The Gates," "The Fault," and "The Fang." Even so, the record requires no psychic divination to glean its fragile majesty, its muted tumult of mirage and melody. The beauty it possesses is too blatant, and bountiful.

Compilation album curated by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith The directive for the composers featured on Breathing Instruments was, in effect, to accentuate the ways in which instruments sound like they are breathing. Some have recreated the literal experience of feeling or hearing the human breath. Others take a more abstract approach, where "breathing" is more motif than object of emulation. From hushed pulsations and distant vocals in Kathryn Shuman's 'Objects creating a womb-like environment to Julianna Barwick's blissful 'Newborn' the tracks give sonic form to the experience of emerging from the womb. There is also a striking concurrence of woodland sounds throughout this collection from the ghostly tones of Emily A Srague's 'Flew' to Cool Maritime and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's dew dripped 'Daybreak'. Meanwhile the undulating seascape of Geotic's 'Uncaught' conjures moments of Evening Star by Fripp/ Eno, but supplants that album's crystalline production with the warm crackle of vinyl. If we learn anything from Breathing Instruments it is that we are inextricable from the natural world.
