Sherwood released his first solo album in 2003, but his CV reaches back much further than that. In the '80s he was the driving force behind numerous dub and reggae projects, including the collective Singers & Players and Lee "Scratch" Perry's album Time Boom X De Devil Dead, which he produced. In Hands Paper Pack. Sylvgheist Maëlström is a French producer who has a couple of albums under his belt already and joins the HANDS label roster in 2012 with an album that will leave a permanent impression: Glossy Electronica, elaborate beat programming and mind-blowing melodies, an actually mini-mal album (soundwise) which seems massive by its strong emotional impact. Sylvgheist Maëlström is preoccupied with natural events and special places, and "Skaftafell" is the evocation of a huge and massive glacier movement like a moraine or a surge. The concept is to describe as a sound the deep and uncontrollable movement of nature, as the glacier becomes an independent entity, an animal really, untamed by civilization. Nevertheless, after human influence, nature starts to destroy itself. The "Intro" showcases the deep melodies, pulses and peculiar beats, downbeat and distorted, yet with a strong organic feel to them, which we shall encounter throughout the album. "Banda Aceh" is an area in Indonesia which was horribly harmed by the 2004 tsunami, and the track features tribal beats and repetitive sounds that echo the threat. The Mexican town "Tlahuitoltepec", casualty of a mudslide, is the eponym for a grinding and scraping beat structure. A less dismal fate is that of the "Narssarssuaq Desert" in Greenland, which inspired Sylvgheist Maëlström to a moody, hypnotic tune with minimal techno beats, while "Kuthia" appears even more groove infected. Back to Greenland, its capital "Nuuk" - and a shorter, straighter track for "Skaftatell", followed by "Surge", a hypnotic, vibrant piece. Of course Iceland has its glaciers, and "Jakobshavn Isbræ Melt" is not only an exceptionally large specimen, but also a track that will resound in your mind forever with its effective and simple melodic hook and repetitive beats. On a darker note is the sonic painting of the floods of "Nartuby" (France); and "Dendrite Crystal" is surely the most anorganic sounding part of "Skaftatell", a nice bite of tasty Electronica. "Skaftafell Jökull" is a place in Iceland subject to a constant culmination of natural forces, and the track is also the most upfront, inciting one on the album. The closing title "Puyehue" then releases some of that tension, and maybe it is imaginable that a brave Techno DJ will have a crowd dancing to a Chilean volcano? "Skaftatell" impresses through strong production values and a range of wonderful ideas. It is an urgent recommendation for anyone who will fall for Electronica that is far from easily accessible, yet captivating and very deeply emotional! Style: Electro

You might be familiar with KONX-OM-PAX previous work without already being aware of it. His real name is Tom Scholefield, he's from Glasgow, and as a 3D film director and graphic artist he's made videos for locals Hudson Mohawke and Mogwai as well as Martyn, Jamie Lidell, Kuedo and Lone, created sleeve artwork for Oneohtrix Point Never, Rustie, King Midas Sound and others, plus he has toured with Mogwai as a DJ. So how on earth does he find the time to make music, or the energy? Tom explains that he makes music to chill out, a form of creative self medication. In contrast to his bright, synthetic and colourful artwork and videos, his music is more mossy and analogue. "Glacier Mountain Descent", for instance, is a re-imagining of the start of Werner Herzog's "Aguirre". At other times tracks are inspired by nostalgia for childhood feelings, while watery immersion is a running theme, and a sense of Scottish surrealism is another. Tom started out making tracks in his teens, copying the synth lines he'd heard on prog house CDs, before graduating to a deep fascination with Jeff Mills and Drexciya's hermetic imagery and alien funk after hearing them on John Peel's show. This led him to creating lo-fi techno, then DJing and promoting events at art school, which developed his knowledge, driving him to formulate an aesthetic of unpolished, textured and emotive music. "Regional Surrealism" works largely like a film. Vignettes like "'Isotonic Pool" transition into larger more dramatic pieces like the deep "At Home With Mum and Dad"which takes an early Aphex Twin sounding ambient track and fills it with odd drama. "Sura-Tura-Gnosi-Cosi" featuring mysterious U.S. artist Steven Retchard is full of tape-hiss and unsettling spoken word, while "Zang-Tumb" - with guitar played by MOGWAI's Stuart Braithwaite - works in bruised and twisted Ash-Ra Tempel territory. Elsewhere "Slootering" finds a sweet spot between Drexciya and Oneohtrix Point Never, while "Lagoon Leisure" lets you get lost in musique concrete space and drops. Later on "Hurt Face" rubs static and raw electronic textures together and "Chambers" follows it up with a sunny glow. The album finishes on the water-themed "Let's Go Swimming" which indulges in a slow-motion nostalgia, sending you away happy. Style: Electro

In Hands Paper Pack Two years after ,Utopia", Candy Schlüer of S.K.E.T. returns with his second album. "Evilution" is a statement in his very own way, mastered again by DJ Hidden, whom he credits as a major influence, which is true in the sense that 16Pad Noise Terrorist presents Drum'n'Bass with a strong industrial, dark and experimental edge. Candy is concerned with contradictions, the underlying question is how we develop, if we just keep on going as usual - well, you guessed it, evolution turns foul, and the result is "Evilution". The album also establishes strong ties to the debut, whose album title now appears as a track title - as well as it's antithesis, the dystopia. Dystopian visions actually seem the 16Pad Noise Terrorist's preoccupation, but if "Utopia" was an Orwellian boot stamping in your face, "Evilution" depicts a more refined "Brave New World" with all its stupefying soma effects - even though the stench of books set on fire at "Fahrenheit 451" is omnipresent. Generally, the tempo is somehow curbed, and even melodies find their way into the tracks. But don't worry - there's enough tough Darkstep to be found, and the body fluids already start to warm with "Wasp", and are kept boiling throughout the a lbum with "Le Petit Consommateur", "We Are All Junkies" and so on. The album closes with "Darkest Utopia", generating a dehuman- ized, hostile atmosphere with metallic sounds and shredded speech bits. "Evilution" is not easily digested for sure, but it's well worth exploring, it provides food for thought, but also a vibe for moving. Candy Schlüer proves he has defined a distinct style of Drum'n'Bass for 16PNT and will earn tons of due respect for his project with his sophomore album! Style: Electro

In June 2011 Subtext Recordings was restarted after a six year hiatus for the release of the second LP from EMPTYSET, titled "Demiurge". This album represented a transition from the first two Subtext releases, a pair of seminal experimental recordings from the groundbreaking duo Vex'd, switching path into a new terrain that allowed for the distortion and dissolution of the sequencer grid and shifted the focus of the label from the programmed to the composed. Through this development Subtext Recordings has evolved into a conversation between EMPTYSET, the ex-Vex'd artist Roly Porter, and composer Paul Jebanasam, who has spearheaded the revival of the label. This new release continues this dialogue by commissioning both Porter and Jebanasam to respond to the material contained within "Demiurge" and develop their own interpretations of the original album. Paul Jebanasam has taken on the album as a whole entity, processing components from various pieces and placing them within an elemental and volcanic landscape, a composed topography that emerges from eruptions and waves of thunderous drones accompanied by guitar noise from Warp Records artist Nick Talbot (GRAVENHURST). Roly Porter's approach conversely narrows the focus down to the individual element of unction', one of the keystones of "Demiurge", and overlays the track with a defiant cavernous superstructure, a raw militant armour that redefines the framework of "Function" as a ravaging war like machine, or a cry of resistance echoing across a vanquished world.
