Given Dr Alex Patterson’s patent lionisation of stoner reggae (I dread to think how much he owes in royalties to Mikey Dread & The Scientist), this collaboration seems a long overdue meeting of sympathetic talents. To long time Orb fans, the musical template here will be agreeably familiar, igniting many happy memories and maybe one or two bongs. The understated, minimal techno throbs (no doubt Thomas Fehlmann’s touch) suck the casual listener in, particularly on Go Down Evil. As for Scratch’s contributions, whilst it’s been suggested that his prime years are long behind him, he keeps on truckin’ regardless, this being his 22nd album since 2000. It wouldn’t surprise if the bulk of these lyrics were improvised on the spot, which to be fair is often what he does best. In much the same way that Orbital re-jigged fan favourite Satan as the dubstep banger Beelzedub on their previous album, possible show-stealer Golden Clouds re-imagines The Orb’s classic Little Fluffy Clouds through a haze of acoustic strums, iridescent bleeps and whatever chemicals were floating through the studio air at the time. Scratch adds some suitable childhood ramblings that, whilst not as intoxicating as Rickie Lee Jones’ original ruminations, manage to impress comfortably enough. Style: Electronic

America is Dan Deacon's most powerful work to date, the culmination of years spent playing both DIY venues and concert halls across the world, of exercises in the power of the individual and a coordinated mass, of a disenfranchised mind questioning notions of cultural identity and values. The ecstatic, celebratory sounds found on America are in compelling contrast with the darker thematic undercurrents. The album demonstrates anger, confusion, and apocalyptic anxiety over corporatism and war, but finds consolation in the geography of the United States and in recent social movements both domestic and international. There's a subtler approach to texture on America, informed by Deacon's recent experiences in the classical world, commissions and collaborations, his Carnegie Hall debut; his first film score (for a Francis Ford Coppola film). The integration of acoustic timbres - including concert percussion, winds, brass, and strings - has ramped up exponentially since Deacon first ventured outside of purely synthesized sound on 2009's Bromst. The most raw cut from the album, "Lots", seems a fitting introduction to a collection of a songs that sit at the intersection of noise, pop, dance and chamber music. Filled with the struggle and opportunity rampant in Deacon's America, Lots' lyrics bounce between a post-apocalyptic world influenced by Cormac McCathy's The Road and a call not to lose sight of the current movements that aim to change a broken system. Details have been revealed for Matthew Dear's next full-length, Beams. The album lands two years after Black City, arguably Dear's most critically acclaimed work to date. It includes the title track from the Headcage EP, which came out on Ghostly International in April and is now available as a free download from the label's website. All of the other tracks are previously unreleased. The first track, "Her Fantasy," will be released as a single in June. "I'm about four to five different people at any given time," Dear says in the album's press release. "By allowing all of those different personalities to exist... the most pure and direct self can come through in the music. [The songs] may still be cryptic, and full of contradictions—but in my opinion, that is pure, unadulterated thought in musical form. They are direct lines to the center." Beams was recorded at in Dear's home studio and mixed at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn. The portrait on the cover comes from Ghostly's go-to artist, Michael Cina. Style: Electronica

Let's be honest here: the stuff Alec Koone makes as Balam Acab is basically trip-hop. It slumps with the same deliberate wooziness. It's just the palette that has changed. We've updated from jazz and soundtrack sources to digitally manipulated fragments of sound and R&B acapellas. That's not to discount it or its originality: that it finds an affinity in a mostly outmoded genre is merely a stylistic surfeit, and indeed Balam Acab's music owes much to the ghostly garage and dubstep peddled by Burial and soundalikes as well. And, anyway, Wander / Wonder is Koone's best work yet, pulling together all the loose ends of his oeuvre into something sleek and obsidian. Almost every track on Wander / Wonder floats in and out gradually, taking upwards of thirty seconds to fade in and out, meaning that even Koone's miniature drops feel massive. Indeed, after the operatic tension building of cresting opener "Welcome," the way "Apart" hip-hop beat crashes into view is like an earthquake in fuzzy slippers. Allowing digital dilapidation to eat through his tracks, Koone cherishes timestretch artifacts and turns them into rhythmic accents, so on tracks like "Now Time" the drums sound like they're colliding and sliding around each other. The vocal processing is familiar, but Koone's style is distinct. His voices tend to dance and sway in theatrical tandem ("Motion"). They're still pitched up but they're less alien than the norm, and their words are shredded into wordless syllables that remain riveting even without meaning. It all comes to a head on "Oh, Why," four minutes of plaintive piano and coarse gravel washes under poignant R&B drama. The simplistic and straightforward construction could be cloying in the hands of a lesser producer, but Koone manages to wring a near verse-chorus-verse structure out of those touching warbles. "Oh, Why" might be the most gorgeous moment on Wander / Wonder, but for most of the album's 40 minute duration Koone sustains a mood of dumbstruck, pained beauty. It's wounded but never depressive, brooding but somehow uplifting. See Birds, was a promising debut, but Wander / Wonder is the kind of record that can pull you into its emotional undertow from the minute those helium angels start singing.
