Rephlex laid virtually dormant for a while because they just don't follow the fashion train whatsoever. They gave the world the seminal Grime comps then they left it all the heck alone. I feel that's because they don't want to compromise the classic Rephlex sound. Now, Jodey K IS the Rephlex sound, his last EP was a cracking collection of hyper-catchy acid house & sharp electro-ish tunes & so is this 6 track beauty. He molds Chicago House, Detroit Techno & that distinct squiggly "braindance" groove into fresh, funky shapes without too much technical trickery or flash stuff drowning out any of the flow and vibrancy. He keeps it pure, infusing each track with lush synth lines and undeniably tasty rhythms. His stuff isn't remotely samey either - each track has a strong individuality and many work in multiple ways - they could straddle various disparate DJ sets much like AFX himself, or Drexciya. Grasscut will release their second album, Unearth, on 16 July. Grasscut are uniquely concerned with place, with location - Unearth features ten songs shaped by landscape and memory, each inspired by a specific location in Britain. There is also a "shadow version" of Unearth, comprising alternative versions of each of the ten tracks. Each currently exists only on a single cassette, which has been concealed (with Walkman) in a box at each location around the country. Grasscut invite those of a curious and/or dogged disposition to track down any or all of the boxes, following video directions and Twitter clues. Any fan who posts a photo of himself listening to a shadow track in situ will receive a signed CD copy of the shadow version of Unearth. But each Walkman also features a letter of the alphabet: one-tenth of a codeword. The first person to visit all ten locations, and to contact us with this word, will be entitled to a private Grasscut performance in their own home.
